What’s so cool about this for me and what adds so much texture to this version, is that the instrumental introducing musical ideas before the vocals creates a certain setup/payoff structure, kind of like jazz where the band members are responding to each other musically. I often find pop to be a little too structured and packaged feeling. Everything is boxed into its section of the song if that makes sense. This fixes that for me.

If you like this version, there's a very simple reason, and some already explained it here: Build-up. Most songs nowadays have only repeating melody and harmony, and this version makes it seem like the harmony is building and ramping up the song. There are a few genres that I see doing this consistently: - EDM - Gospel - Soundtracks And I love all of them, particularly artists like TheFatRat, who can pull out an amazing build-up while keeping it complex and beautiful, even on top of a simple chord progression. Aside from that, I love funky songs, so Dua Lipa stole my heart there, 'cause she does a lot of them. Also a fan of Haywyre, who mixes EDM, Jazz, Funk, and whatnot.

I believe 9 seconds exactly matches 4 bars which is the basic unit that this song is built around (even though the larger sections, eg chorus take longer). Thus 4 bars moved to the right still fit the general theme of the song, while introducing a lot more diversity, because we now have more different combinations of vocals with music. Really well done!

I think I know why this sounds more instrumental focused. In the original song, the changes in the beat happen at the same time Dua sings a new section (verse/bridge/chorus etc.), so they go under the radar because you’re used to the beat changing when the section of the song changes. But because the transition from verse -> bridge or bridge -> chorus or chorus -> verse is delayed, it doesn’t coincide with the change in beat, and so you notice the beat changes much more, especially because so few pop songs switch up the instrumental outside of a transition

I think it highlights what's both good and bad about the original very well. It feels more like a band performing and grooving where they feel necessary. But there is also some places where the punchiness is lost. It's a good study in how writing pop music could be done in a less traditional way to great effect. Just imagine a complete rewrite with this as the inspiration.

A lot was changed but big factors: The repeating of the chorus isnt as boring anymore! Every pop song really needs to work on making the repetitions in a song enjoyable and unique rather than catchy. Because of these factors, and thanks to the beat: it feels like the song is actually a story. Theres a start. A middle. And an end. So many songs feel like there's a good start, then the song. Maybe a little bit of an end. But it doesnt feel like the song is building up, EXPLOSION, then conclusion. That's how an average pop song should feel in my opinion. AN ENDING THAT FEELS LIKE AN ENDING. With the instrumentals gone, it gives the effort she put in her vocals more spotlight. She sung it in a way that felt like it was the end. And the lack of music helped pronounce that. Too many songs, just end. I want proper endings.

I heard or read somewhere that your brain releases dopamine when you listen to a song more than one time with some period of time in between each listening. Because it can guess the next beat and it’s rewarding, so I’m thinking maybe it’s also the reason why it slaps really hard when you listen to this version of the song, only because we have listened to it before and now it’s a different way and more rewarding.

In the original the instrumental is lined up with the vocals. The 9 seconds in question would be 4 bars. Now in the original song there’s a change to the variation on the theme every 8 bars cause again, the instrumental and vocals are lined up with each other, however by pushing the vocals 4 bars you get an interesting switch every 4 bars (one in the vocals and one in the instrumental) over the course of the 8 bars and the producer made the song a little more interesting and unpredictable by making each part, both instrumental and vocal, interact with not one, but two variations of their counterparts. (idk if you’ll understand, it makes sense in my head I’m sorry!!) One could argue that this could be done with most pop music because there is definitely a formula that’s being used over and over and over again and I am definitely looking forward to seeing more remixes like this one

@AdamKlownzinger I came back to this because I'm having a rough day and it's just so good AHH. The second chorus especially, because it seriously amps up on the repeat creating more of an unexpected burst of energy. The fact the whole song pauses for the final prechorus line also just really hits and anticipates the final event. I think that the reason it sounds so good is that the structure of the instrumental doesn't mimic the structure of the vocals as it does in the original song. In the delayed version, the instrumental changes mid-verse and the „chorus” consists of two different parts instead of one part repeating itself twice. It's just more complex.

What’s so cool about this for me and what adds so much texture to this version, is that the instrumental introducing musical ideas before the vocals creates a certain setup/payoff structure, kind of like jazz where the band members are responding to each other musically. Levitating, is a trick. (It's whatever floats your boat.)

It builds a lot better, and there is more focus on the instruments instead of just the vocals.

Being able to make out individual instruments in a pop song's chorus feels kinda illegal Seriously tho, this is an excellent demonstration of how accompaniment can change the character of lyrics and is really a much more crucial player than most modern pop songs will let it be
This actually makes the musicality of the song so much more noticeable than the original verson

First thing I noticed was that there is a few bars where the beat “cools off” at the end of the chorus which is a neat effect. It’s almost like the opposite effect of a “drop” which builds hype before the chorus, this takes some time to chill even while the chorus is still not quite done. ❤

Allowing the lyrics and instrumental introduce new parts themselves first here and there and not at the same time is something a bunch of EDM genres do. Nice to hear it happen in a pop song for a surprise.

I agree! I never liked Dua Lipa, her music felt just boring basic pop. But then I heard physical's instrumental version... one of the best pop instrumentals ever.

This really gives a unique experience. Many people might find this idea ridiculous and not something that would make much difference. Actually this makes such a different listening experience, and one that is quite interesting. Thanks for making and uploading this video.

Dude, this is so much better than the original. Impressive!

The second chorus especially, because it seriously amps up on the repeat creating more of an unexpected burst of energy. It has this charge and release feel, it separates her from the instruments so they compliment each other

Begone evil number.
I think that the reason it sounds so good is that the structure of the instrumental doesn't mimic the structure of the vocals as it does in the original song. In the delayed version, the instrumental changes mid-verse and the „chorus” consists of two different parts instead of one part repeating itself twice. It's just more complex.
This is so good!
omfg this is actually so good
Okay, so certain parts definitely sound off, and it bothers me. But I gotta say, the “chorus” accompaniment is so much more subdued like this, and it really brings out her vocals, which is something that, even though I love the song, I’ve always had a gripe about the actual arrangement _not_ doing. Frankly, I love it more.
