Leviathan Cave, north of Rachel NV

Aerial video of the Worthington Mountain Range and the Leviathan Cave north of Rachel, NV. Flying a drone from Wild Horse Spring over the Worthington Mountain Wilderness and up to the cave. The video includes some great close-up looks at the huge opening of the cave. On the return it shows the Groom Mountain Range with Bald Mountain, Rachel in the distance and the northern Sand Spring Valley. 07/28/2019

    Been to Rachel and the folks that own and run this stop are wonderful. If you are in Las Vegas it's worth the 3 hour drive to visit history in the making over the years. Great field day trip from Vegas and also stop at Alamo to stretch out a bit.

    Just a great job all around, piloting and videoing. Thanks for sharing this and for posting the other links on your site. Something about caves are fascinating and eerie at the same time. Maybe has something to do with entering the bowels of Mother Earth and the unknown that awaits. What a hidden gem and I'm glad it's so hard to get to. Thanks.

    Thank you. I would love to fly into the cave, but unfortunately it is high above the desert floor. If I flew into the cave I would lose contact with the drone and the ability to control it. Diving into the cave would certainly possible if you were to hike up to it but I will gladly leave that to someone else. I hear the hike is brutal.

    This is never before seen footage of this cave. Nobody has done this!! This is fantastic! Thank you for doing this. I'm going to watch this a couple more times too. Your mission planning is outstanding. A lot of people think you just get a drone in the air and fly it until you're done. No it's not like that. You have to be mindful of obstacles, distances, battery capacity, & weather conditions. The list doesn't stop there, You have to make sure you have enough battery to get back, an often make sure your return trip home is with the wind instead of against it. On that note, the forward portion of your drone was really angled forward! It must have been windy up there and or you were flying towards the target around 30 mph. This is a great job flown by a great pilot. This channel ranks up there with the area 51 rider who also puts out excellent videos, but from ground level. Good job, good job, great job! I'm passing this video out to the rest of my "landing party" who also visited the BLM land around the base near Rachel Nevada. We talked about hiking up there and visiting this cave. The hike is very strenuous, an 8-hour hike. We never did it. I've researched repelling down into the cave. It's risky and when you repel down you have to ascend back up. I'm not that experienced on rope. 🤝 *Hand Shake*.

    @ 5:55 On the right side of the screen, there is something shiny. It could be a reflective rock and it probably is. The object enters the frames second before this. It is seen for quite a few more seconds. I have some questions if I may ask. When you fly your DJI, are you using the screen on your mobile device? Or are you using goggles? I've been thinking about getting goggles but not sure if it's worth it. For some reason, I seen the thing you have a Phantom 3 advanced? That's what I have 3 access gimbal Super duper slam duck, home run camera whatever it has on it..

  • @RachelNevada

    @RachelNevada

    I looked at the object in my stills. It is a light colored rock. The lighting, partial shadow, makes it stand out more. I use a tablet on my controller. I find goggles disorienting. And I fly a Phantom 4 Pro. I actually crashed it to the tune of $240 in repairs on my last flight. Just got it back today. The distance and altitude change from the spring where I launched to the cave is pushing the battery. I had to cancel auto-RTH on every flight. The last flight it was a bit windy and I ran out of battery about 1/2 mile before I got it back to me. Crashed into some trees, but was able to hike up the hill and got it back.

    How did you orbit the cave so smoothly? Are you using the DJI app or are you using Litchi? this is also an interesting video when you speed up the playback speed 2x. The cave just kind of pops out of nowhere.

  • @RachelNevada

    @RachelNevada

    I use pre-planned missions with Litchi. With a tool called "Virtual Litchi Mission" you can fly the mission in Google Earth to get an idea of what it will look like. Still, I find myself flying every mission about three times, with some tweaks in between. The drones also have some quirks, so you never get the same exact result twice.

  • @DesertJeff

    @DesertJeff

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@RachelNevada I've been thinking about purchasing Litchi. 25 bucks. Not expensive, but I may purchase it and do some experimenting later on in the year as fall and winter approaches closer. Did you have radio contact with your drone all throughout the mission or did you lose contact and you just waited for it to come back. That's scary. I've seen people do this on KZread. You send your drone off on a long distance mission and it disconnects, it's gone flying it's mission. You wait, you wait some more, and eventually reconnects when it's coming home. Pretty dang awesome, but yet scary at the same time. DJI has got this drone technology down pretty good. It would be interesting to look at your flight log.

  • @RachelNevada

    @RachelNevada

    @@DesertJeff Litchi is definitely the ticket. I could have done hardly any of the missions published here without Litchi. On this particular mission I did not lose contact with the drone. The problem with the drone (not Litchi) is that pre-programmed gimbal pitch angles do not work when the controller loses contact. I have flown various missions where I did lose contact, but that requires some careful planning to set the gimbal pitch to an acceptable average before you lose contact. For that reason I have modified my controller for larger range. One mission where I lost contact was the Sanderson Mtn mission. You will notice that the gimbal pitch is constant for the entire mission.

    My uncle and my family were some of the early people in the cave besides the indians that live there before. The blm drops in via heli once a year to check things. They stole the original log book. Access is either side of the range however its not for the timid weekend hiker. The ropes are not just left. Its a tied in rope / metal ladder to drop into the cave. Before webhad to down climb on a rope.
