Easy as pie! I l worked in warehouse and it’s intimidating at first but doing it 100 times a day will boost your confidence. Just practice and do not rush!!!!!

As a warehouse foreman, The best advice I can give is practice. If you’re not comfortable with operating-DONT BE SCARED TO ASK FOR HELP! Also, don’t be scared of your forklift! Where I work there’s a lot of guys that refuse to get certified because they’re not comfortable in driving which is due to not driving enough. It all comes with practice and getting used to operating. Lack of confidence is what makes mistakes. Also, when leveling out you forks, along with operation in general-USE YOUR HIGH BEAMS. I don’t care if it’s midday; sometimes the extra light it what you need. Sounds crazy but I use it to help me focus when I’m picking up difficult load. Being aware of where your load is situated and how your mast is tiled is key.

I’m one of two section leaders in my place that have forklift certifications, and my opposite won’t drive the truck, she’s still scared. I keep explaining that the only way she will get more comfortable with operating is to actually operate.

Good advice as I've passed my forklift training and I still get nervous when using the forks to pick up items from high places.

it's hard to do with an unstable load or a messed up stack of pallets. it takes experience

Yeah I pick up packs of lumber off a conveyor chain that have no pallet and it's impossible to see or tell what your forks are doing. Not only that but bc the stacks of wood aren't completely square, you have to hit the back end kind of hard to push them all level or your forks won't go all the way in and you leave a couple of boards behind. The problem with THAT is the roller chain...when you give them a good bump they'll go rolling back down the chain and make it impossible to reach and lift them. The only solution we've found is to bump and then immediately lift the pack of wood quickly before it can get away from you. It'd be nice if the chains locked or disengaged once the wood got to the end but for whatever reason, they don't. Bc trainees are often slow moving and reluctant to hit things, altho necessary, I've found it is very difficult to train a new forklift employee to properly do this job. Not to mention, this is a large closed cab 37,500 lb diesel powered lift, which can often be much more intimidating to operate than your more common open cab, 5,000 lb model.

@0:09, the problem isn't level forks. The problem is that the operator has his forks *under* instead of *in* the bottom pallet. @0:34 you can't use this as an example because you can't level the forks on a Raymond pallet stacker.

Sometimes I look at the mast or the top of the load rest or the top of the load to see if it is level. The hardest is when you forks are way up high.

At CP we beat the hell out of ours. Not purposely just not how you would expect to use it. For example: if we need to close a box car door, easy, just ram the side of the door with the forks at high speed. aside from using them roughly we also have a lot of extensions. picking up wheels or couplers.

Why do some forklifts have dummy side shifts control levers. The forklifts that I drive at Menards don't have working side shifts.

  • @coachmilt9987

Charles, I'm guessing that the side shift apparatus (that fits on the carriage) is not installed so that's why the lever doesn't work. The apparatus does impede your vision a bit though so maybe that's why it was removed...

I’ll give you an example of what happens if you forget to level your forks, you shiny a 1.5T pallet of water back in the high bay racking, 100” above your head, burst the sprinkler pipe, and destroy £200k+ of stock in the process 😑
