Get up to speed with current designs, you're advocating for hack job techniques from 40 years ago.@@20shaunwilson

  • @Charger-ob8yl

    @Charger-ob8yl

    2 күн бұрын

    This is ENTIRELY wrong. These geogrid walls NEVER need rebar for any height. As a CE who interned at a geotech company while in college, I've inspected (literally monitored every action of the wall construction from beginning to end) at least a dozen of these EXACT types of walls, up to 30' high and a few hundred feet long, (huge subdivisions and commercial sites) and the plans have never called for rebar. The only piece of rebar you'll see during the construction of these walls are when then drive a stake to tie their leveling string for the first row of block. The black grid material you see being placed, every other level, holds the backfill in place, by friction and the selfweight of the wall. One could build a retaining wall with just compacted dirt or stone and those geogrids, and it would stay firmly in place without the blocks even being there. The blocks literally serve no structural purpose in regards to holding back the reinforced zone. When built correctly, there is virtually no "shifting" or "readjustment" of the ground. Even basket walls that are 50'+ high utilize no rebar. EVERYTHING they did in this video is exactly correct, and there's nothing ommitted. This is a certified, professional wall. It's actually over-engineered, with all stone backfilled, where most of the backfilled could've been dirt. Your neighbor most likely didn't build a geogrid-reinforced wall. If they did, they used the completely wrong soil and/or didn't compact the soil. The soil has to have certain friction angle specifications, be at the ideal moisture content, and be compacted to 95-98% compaction, per the proctor. Out of curiosity, and in all due respect, honestly, what makes you come on YT with zero actual experience or knowledge of this type of wall and make some definitive assertion that you pulled directly out of your a**?

    A lot of hard work, planning and money went into this. Bravo for your careful planning and hard work!! I can totally understand why the ground is being leveled and a retaining wall is put in. TOTALLY!! But I admit to loving a yard with a sloping area that isn't flat. I would do it for the front "lawn" (which isn't a "yard" as it's likely what others will first see. Now if I wanted to level out the back yard, rather than a retaining yard, I'd use rocks and low maintenance alpine type plants for the wall. "IF" I was to build an actual retaining wall, surely there are other pre-made blocks to use that look more rustic like rounded stones? It's what I'd use.

    I did three, 5ft. tiers, stepping back into a bank (company didn't want to hire an engineer, so we were limited to 5ft per tier) with 3.5 feet of gravel backfill, for 180 feet of bank. The bobcat could only reach to backfill the first tier, and the trackhoe wouldn't fit into the space (and the bucket was unusably small, anyway), so I had to lug carry the gravel in 5gal buckets for all 6,300 cubic feet of gravel needed for the backfill of the upper 2 tiers. Oh, did I mention what the wall was made of? Not brick! Nope, irregular stone, that I had to sort by thickness, so that the rows were even within 0.5" across the entire length of the walls. I did the math. I carted, BY HAND, 210 tons of stone, not counting the gravel. I did the math. 60 separate 3.5-ton pallets of rock, stacked into a wall. Bobcat didn't help there, either. Boss got paid $50,000 for that job. I barely cleared $3,000. No bonus. I quit right after. Worst summer job I ever had. I'd have made almost as much serving smoothies at the mall, and there I'd have had A/C and a chance to interact with girls. Wish someone has told teenager me about predatory employers. At least I was ripped, by the end of it.

    Haven’t read all of the comments, so this may have been covered already. The geogrid you put in to reinforce the wall is installed in the wrong direction. Uniaxial geogrid is strongest in the direction it comes off the roll (machine direction) and weakest in the direction of the transverse bars ( cross machine direction). You need to roll out and cut the grid in the required length for your embedment in the reinforced zone. It’s a pain, but it is the right way to do it. Unless you have a biaxial grid that has testing for MSE wall applications.
