brandon r nothing in this world is free. Like he said, no child left behind cut the funding because its more about testing than encouraging learning. I had to share text books with other kids some days. Education is poorly funded, period. But I'm digressing. The RR app was built with kickstarter. He raised the money the same day it was posted.

Honestly, it CAN succeed as a KZread series. There's LOADS of people on KZread making money off of views, likes, subscriptions, whatever & I think that's the future of Reading Rainbow. The app is great, BUT I feel like it should still be some type of "show" still going on. It might not be on TV, BUT it could work since we're in 2014 and going forward. Also, ANYBODY can watch it. Parents who used to watch it can get a nostalgia boost and their children can learn by watch as well. So basically that "free factor" is still alive, they will get the money to continue as well. Hope someone from their sees this idea. I loved Reading Rainbow as a kid. :)

It isn't allowed sadly. The logistics of copyright infringement and restrictions don't allow this type of programming on KZread sadly. A channel dedicated to book reading for disabled and blind individuals was band due to these issues already. They were told instead books could be read to people through apps that sell books already, so it wasn't protected under equal access for people with disabilities either.

I miss this show so much. I remember watching it all the time when I was younger along with other great shows like: Mister Rogers, Arthur, Bear in the Big Blue House, and a ton of others. I absolutely love to read, and thinking back to this show, maybe that was part of the reason why. A mixture of great teachers, intelligent parents, and quality TV shows taught me from a young age that reading isn't boring or torturous, but it's honestly one of the best modes of entertainment and for hosting ideas. We need more shows like this back again. Happy shows that don't just have to do with constant education, but shows that focus upon creating a love for education. Maybe if we were taught that learning things was fun, there wouldn't be so many kids struggling to get by in school. On a completely different note, I'm going on a binge of old kids show I watched when I was younger and I'm feeling so nostalgic!

Despite it being a great idea to have Reading Rainbow as an app, it still needs to be on television. Yes, we're in the 21st century, but not everybody has internet access at home and iPhones are a LUXURY. Reading needs to be fostered in kids at every economic level. I work with kids on a daily basis who say their computers are broken or non-existent. We still need to be able to turn on the TV and have somebody encourage kids to read. Yes, adults (parents) can have a big influence, but we will always need a backup plan. I hope it goes back on the air, and SOON.

One more reason to hate no child Left behind. It sounds like a great idea, but instead of 'no child Left behind' he should have called it 'every child held back'. Seriously, in middle school and high school I struggled, not because I couldn't keep up, but because I was too far ahead of my peers, especially in literature and English. There was actually one semester that I failed my English class because I was too far ahead. How wrong is that? And it wasn't just there. I thank God that my parents were willing to fight for my reading privileges even as early as elementry school. Honestly, illiteracy is the worst disease in our society, and is even worse because in most cases is also the most easily cured. I can't tell you how thrilled I am that Reading Rainbow is coming back!

Learning to read before you go to school also teaches kids that they don't need to depend on school to learn things. I've never felt that school has been the institution that has taught me the most. I learned most of what I needed for Math 11 on my own by the time I was 11 years old. I won math competitions at the regional level as the only entrant not from a private school. Later, I moved to Asia on my own and went to language classes, but most of what I learned happened in parks and around town talking to old men and women, not from the class itself. Now, granted, I learned to read when I was 2 (my mother made dated audio recordings), but the principle remains the same. My sisters were a bit slower than me, learning at age 5 and 4. Learning how to learn on my own has made a huge difference for me. I hope (and I believe) Burton has spread this value to many people. And back when TNG was still a thing and hadn't been ruined by Kurtzman, my favorite TNG character was Data. Then Geordie. Always fancied myself a bit of an engineer myself. What a legacy LeVar has built.

Lavar I grew up watching reading rainbow and I want to say thank you for all of it, I will purchase the subscription for my child and my wife's daycare. Reading rainbow taught me in a way to be a jack of all trades and that has made me successful enough to provide a good life for my family, once again thank you and keep up the good work.

LeVar is such a class act. The production of Reading Rainbow was top notch. The producers clearly understood child development and literacy. It's incredible. The repeats will forever intrigue generations to come. As a teacher, I use Reading Rainbow every chance I get. Kids today still devour this stuff.

When i was in elementary, born in 1985 and growing up in SoCal (Glendale) we had the Bookmobile, a library on wheels. We got excited about it coming by, and it got kids stoked about reading. We visited the Library weekly, the bookmobile came by once a month. It was another way to get kids to be excited about reading.

Now that I look back, Levar Burton and the characters he played had a big influence on my life. As a child watching the reading rainbow. That show fostered a great drive in me to be curious about the world and literature and his character in Star Trek gave me a drive to solve problems and helped me work well with a team of professionals in solving these problems.

Love Reading Rainbow. Levar is great. Nurturing kids through media can be tough in todays world due to all the different choices children have. When I was a child choices were very limited. Reading Rainbow was often the most entertaining programming on at its time slot. Mindless fun often trumps educational or beneficial activities because of a lack of a fun factor. Can a Reading Rainbow app be more fun than a game like Angry Birds for example. Hypothesis : recreational reading leads to creative thinking and imagination which leads to curiosity which leads to study which leads to academic pursuit which leads to dicovery and innovation which leads to making the world a better place.

Save our kids from being slaves to electronics. Hang their heads and get hypnotized. No morals, no social intellect, being taught to be tiny consumers…..bring these shows back. These people had genuine intent to help children learn and grow in positive ways. Lavar and mr rogers were solid men that showed us the right way to live and grow in a cruel world.

I became familiar with Levar from both Reading Rainbow, and Star Trek TNG. I grew up with both, and I always thought it was really cool how the guy that played Geordi LaForge - engineer (though not originally) was also the one showing off all the cool stuff in Reading Rainbow. Both shows were two of my favorites, and honestly, I've always liked educational shows and documentaries, and I think part of that was the fact that I grew up watching Reading Rainbow, Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, and similar. It brings me joy to know that he worked to bring the content back so that new generations can experience it. IMO they should also look into a streaming service of their own, and try to include older episodes of the show in addition to new content. That may never come to pass, but I can dream. It would be a way for new generations to watch it, and see older content, and a way for those of us that grew up on the show to look back on it again. As I type this, the theme song is playing in my head lol. I'll never forget Reading Rainbow.

Making experiences like reading FUN!! Making it an adventure, not a chore, is a wonderful thing. I haven't watched the recent kids' shows on PBS (and I had aged out when RR was on air, but understand that it had great impact on getting kids excited about reading), but when I came to the US at age 8, I spent HOURS in front of PBS, soaking up the culture, the language - Sesame Street (which I was already familiar with), Mr Rogers, Zoom, Villa Allegre (OK, let's mix in some Spanish with the English). All kept me mesmerized, all the while, I was learning. We need shows that both ENGAGE and TEACH kids at the same time - they don't even have to realized that they are learning, but just that they are having fun, and their brains are soaking up all the information as they do.
