Letterkenny Manual Telephone Exchange Closing 'Party' 1/4/1987

Wonderful video by Gerard McGinley (who worked in Telecom himself) taken on the occasion of the closing of the old manual telephone exchange in Letterkenny on 1/4/1987. The exchange was in operation from 1959 and was the main switching exchange in Co Donegal routing local calls and trunk calls out of Donegal to Northern Ireland and Internationally. The new automatic exchange programme heralded it's demise. There are many familiar faces in this video of staff who worked for Telecom Eireann (now eir) and many staff who returned for the day. Sadly many of them have now gone to their eternal reward. May they Rest In Peace.

Lovely to see a few glimpses of my late aunt and uncle, long time employees of P&T, and Letterkenny residents. Good also to see where the calls were routed through before we could dial direct to Letterkenny. The lines were rarely clear, and it sometimes took a long long time to actually get through from England, but these staff did fantastic work. Thank you for sharing.

I have no connection to Letterkenny I'm afraid, but I still very much enjoyed your video. What a lovely place the manual exchange must have been to work in. I feel like I know "Vera" already. She's a wonderful storyteller.
