Lettering Animation using Thicc Stroke | After Effects Tutorial
In this After Effects tutorial, I'll show you how to create a lettering animation using Thicc Stroke.
Get Thicc Stroke for FREE and other Plug-ins from @PluginEverything here:

Content:
0:00 Intro
0:24 Adjusting the Thicc Stroke settings
1:53 Path animation
3:50 Adding the revealing drop
4:47 Animating the path shape
5:58 Adding more details
7:05 Outro
First of all, we add Thicc Stroke to our solid and the basic mask path. Then we adjust the settings of the plug-in, before we animate the basic path.
To avoid a linear movement, we set keyframes at positions, where the movement would naturally slow down. Then we adjust the speed, using the graph editor.
Then we animate the shape of the path, as the line moves along.
After that we add a second layer, with a drop - which reveals the path.
Finally, we add more details to our lettering animation to make it look really unique.

Is it possible to add more than 4colors in the gradient of thick stroke?
@ManueldoesMotion

I think 4 colours is the maximum...
when i use your plug-ins I get this error "this effect may slow down preview and export as it is not optimized for multi-frame rendering", how to fix it? Thanks
@ManueldoesMotion
2 жыл бұрын
I didn't create the plug-in, I just use it. So unfortunately you have to ask the company who created it. I think it's "plugineverything".
Great job ... But it is not clear about the white lines that accompany the text ... Thanks!
@ManueldoesMotion
3 жыл бұрын
Thx very much! The white lines are simple path shapes, drawn with the convert vertex tool. Stroke width 4 pixels, no fill. You need to add trim paths and animate the start and end point of the stroke. I animate one example in this chapter: 5:58 Adding more details The timing is important. The strokes needs to follow the main shape with a few frames offset. I would add strokes, where ever there's enough space to place them.
but i neeeeeed to know how you added the exclamation animation. i looks like some drops ... have been looking for very long on how to do this and i think i am missing something
@ManueldoesMotion
Жыл бұрын
I drew lines with the pen tool. Then I added a trim paths animator to animate the start and end point. If you increase the stroke width, you can then use the "Taper" Option in the stroke property to "thin" the end of the stroke. And you need to set "Line Cap" to "Round Cap". That makes it look like a drop. Does that help?
A very awaited tutorial but my CS6 doesn't accept plugins :( any other alternative Manuel?
@ManueldoesMotion

Hi! You could create a shape layer with a stroke, then animate the stroke with trim paths and add a gradient ramp to the layer.

@@ManueldoesMotion Thank you very much for your answer, I will do it as you say. Thank you !
could you please include what composition settings you have, is it 1 second 70 frames? i did 5 seconds and 60 frames and followed along, but the keyframes you put at 48th frame the animation is too fast
@ManueldoesMotion
2 ай бұрын
Usually 24 frames per second. The timing is flexible. Set the keyframes how you think it feels right.

Sorry, but the stuff I do in Thick Stroke can't be composited with other stuff. There is always a black square around the strokes, even when choosing the blend mode to "Add" or "Screen". Am I misunderstanding something?
@ManueldoesMotion
9 ай бұрын
That's weird. Is the square the size of your shape? Or is it like a padding around the strokes?
Tutorial from the beginning would help when you open ae. Importing something from another software already, l dont feel helps.

How you make the path in adobe Illustrator?
@ManueldoesMotion
Жыл бұрын
Use the pen tool and draw the paths. Add each latter to a separate layer. Then import it as composition into your after effects project.
I have a question about importing the path from the illustrator-- how did you do that? Like it seems like the path is inside a solid layer mask!
@ManueldoesMotion
2 жыл бұрын
The plug-in only works with a solid layer mask. I copied the path in Illustrator and pasted it to the solid. That should automatically create a mask.

if you are doing a full tutorial why you don't explain everything from the beginning? There's are some people that we are learning how to use the program and we don't know how to start this tutorial with the path you just had....

In this tutorial I wanted to focus on the part after creating the path. Otherwise it would have been twice as long. Usually you would create the lettering in Illustrator and then import the paths into after effects. But I might soon do a tutorial on lettering as well.
