Rediscover the heart-wrenching beauty of 'Letter from an Unknown Woman', a 1948 romantic drama directed by Max Ophüls. This poignant film features Joan Fontaine in a moving performance as Lisa Berndle, a woman whose life is touched by a fleeting love that burns deeply within her heart.
The film is set in Vienna in the early 1900s, where Lisa falls in love with a concert pianist, Stefan Brand (Louis Jourdan), as a young girl. Her love endures through the years, unseen and unrequited, as Stefan remains blissfully unaware of her devotion. Their paths cross at various points in their lives, with each encounter leaving a profound impact on her, though he scarcely remembers her.
Structured through a letter written by Lisa as she recounts her lifelong love on the eve of a duel that might claim Stefan's life, 'Letter from an Unknown Woman' is a masterful exploration of unrequited love and longing, beautifully shot and rich with emotion. Click to watch now and experience this classic tale of passion and memory that will linger long after the credits roll.

Very good movie with beautiful settings and splendid music, though the story itself is sad. I also used to be stalked in the past by men, never liked obsessed stalkers. Lisa is a victim of her own imagination and assumption.

I watched this film to see how different from another Arabic film adapted from the same story and has the same title. The Arabic film was produced in Egypt in 1960 and starred by F. Atrash who was a top singer. The Arabic film is not that sad and has a happy ending

It may be that I am an idiot, because I see a man who is so completely full of his own selfish sinful desires that he doesn't even remember this most beautiful woman. I also see a woman who is so obsessed with this selfish man, knowing how he uses women to his own selfish needs, that she has turned him into her god. In her pursuit of this man she abandons God and God's law. She knows or at least she comes to know and understand that this man is the most vile of men for he said it himself that he has no honor. He has no morals. She sacrifices herself and her son on his altar of self aggrandizement. It is difficult for me to see how fantastic or wonderful this movie is except that it shows how debased a life truly is when it is lived without God. This it did very well.

It is an interesting and absorbing film. There is no moral centrepiece that would tie each element of the story together. Instead, it sort of drifts and forms no conclusion. She constructs him as an idol and breaks rules laid down in centuries past. Commandments that fix society together, creating a great civilisation the like of which has never been seen. She worships a man. The man worships himself. They cease to love the God whose sovereignty is a necessary presence if vital laws are to be obeyed. By idolising a man, she can only die. The fundamental warning in the Garden of Eden. If Adam and Eve eat of the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, they will surely die. This can speak to us now. The West has rejected God. They worship celebrity, money, and their selfish desires. And civilisation will surely die.
