As a newer player I appreciate these guides. I like mesmer, it's such a cool looking class but everytime i tried playing it (power variants) I ran into the same problems you describe here. At least I'm not the only one finding it hard to get started on...

its a super easy class, dont let this video make it seem overwhelming. Just watch some guides and spend a good few hours of memorizing ur moves and youll be solid, not a single class in this game takes skill minus elementalist.

I agree with your point on understanding other classes. I like to solo roam, so I’m constantly getting ganked and learning how other classes engage, their burst combos and when they are vulnerable has made me a much better Mesmer. It’s about knowing when to burst or counter or evade or pull range, understanding when they have burned all their CD’s and to maximise your chance. It’s very, very hard but rewarding when you stomp one of the current meta professions, I’m looking at you Vindicators…

After years playing Engi (mostly core, then Scrapper); Necro and Ranger,, I decided on building up a Mesmer LOL, haven't been beaten up like that since I unexpectedly ran into Hizen one night on one of his favorite "ONE and DONE" Thief builds. The first thing I saw was that I was DOWN, much less HOW he had squashed me like a nascent butterfly, which as a Mesmer, I guess I actually was RFLMAO! Anyway, Mez (Mirage) has proven to be a quantum leap in difficulty as you point out, especially at my age, and with my 'Ping" :( I HAVE however come upon a couple of simply masterful WVW squad leaders who have proved capable of pulling off some really startling results against competent zergs many multiples of our squad's size. However, once separated from our team, as a Mesmer, I'm immediately targeted by the mithril and higher ranked WVW'rs in groups of 4 or 5 or so, and though I sometimes manage to escape, mostly I'm just shredded before I can get back to my team. Playing Mesmer has turned out to be a seriously humbling experience. OTOH, in PVE, it's turning out to be capable of some rather amazing things and is a veritable "chit load" of fun :)

rly good video i agree with everything, would say ur video is a general explanation of how u can get better ! what helped for me was as u said learning what other classes can do etc but the most thing what helped me was actually recording my own fights and look over my mistakes / trying to find what could i made better in that situation or whatever but also watching montages from every class just to see how the most people play their classes etc etc .

And idk if this will be helpful for people but when I was learning how to count cool downs i would use cool downs on my bar to help, like if they used their heal on a 24s cool down and I had a stunbreak on cooldown for roughly the same amount of time I would know when my stunbreak was up so was their heal.

Imo, these kinds of classes aren't for everyone, to make it work on a class like this you need good attention span, reaction speed, smarts and knowledge. Its a class designed for people that enjoy outplaying other people and the risks of getting deleted if you make a mistake since its much more rewarding to win like this rather than just spamming stuff and hoping for the best, cause you're only in it for items and shit.

Great vid. I know I'm late to the party, but here in 2024 is there a class you'd recommend for a beginner trying to learn pvp/wvw? Are any of the newer Mesmer specs good for this nowadays? More generally, for someone older with kids, etc., is there any realistic way of becoming good enough to enjoy WvW given that I cannot sit and study every class to learn every ability? I don't need to be a master, and I'm fine losing, but it would be nice to just not die all the time.

There is nothing wrong with a class being too hard or complex and having a high skill ceiling, but those classes, when mastered and played well should be rewarded more than low effort specs, that is unfortunately not the case with gw2. You putting 1000 hours+ into a mesmer or thief or ele should reward you when playing on point more than someone playing guardian or necro well, however, you need to put in 4 times more effort into these specs to get similar results as someone mediocre on guardian for example, i wish anet adressed it a bit more

I know this is most likely about dueling, but not everything about mesmer in pvp is hard. Mesmer was the first class I ever played pvp with in 2014 and I always felt like it was the easiest class for conquest pvp because I played as a roamer and could get away from almost any situation while still doing a lot of damage and winning some duels. I even dropped my warrior for it back then... I didn't play for years after that, but nowadays with virtuoso greatsword and dagger/pistol it became even easier because I'm just running around and spamming my rotations from a distance while still having good impact on the match. Even if I get attacked, mesmer still has a lot of blocks and stealth to kite or run away, so if you play it with mobility, it's a very forgiving class overall and one of the most easy classes you can chose as a roamer role in conquest in my opinion.

@@berrybadplayer That's really just an illusion though. What you said is true for every power build because the pvp in this game is all based on timing and reacting accordingly to the situation (not just mesmer). If you waste all your CDs on someone, who is blocking, you will have a hard time fighting against them with any power build, no matter the profession you play. There are 3 things that make classes hard to play for newbies in pvp: First is close combat, second is low sustain and third is low utility (lower sustain and utility allows less mistakes in combat). Meaning the lower the damage of the class/build, the easier it is to play. Daredevil with a low sustain build and dagger or sword and pistole will be one of the harder classes to play in pvp for beginners. Or for example playing berserker with low sustain and close combat can also be very hard and frustrating in pvp because if you keep joining the wrong battles, you will most likely always die right away, so you will need a lot of knowledge and situational awareness to avoid that. Meaning berserker offers higher damage and impact but also has much more risk to it if you make just one single mistake when it comes to positioning or fighting. Mesmer can be a little bit tricky if you choose to play with a one handed sword but like I said: It's extremely beginner friendly if you just play virtuoso with greatsword, dagger and pistol. If you use this combination, you are basically fine just spamming almost all of your weapon skills and the first 2 class skills from a high distance for damage. It's very forgiving when it comes to situational awareness or missed bursts in pvp because you can use class skill 4 + mass stealth to get out of almost any bad situation (you even have the option to break stun and get stealth or break stun and teleport) and since mesmer is single target, ranged and has a good stun, it will give you an advantage in duels against many other classes just by it's nature. Mesmer has never been easier and more beginner friendly than now thanks to virtuoso. Not sure about chronomancer because I haven't played it but I'm quite sure it's all about rotations and less about positioning. The thing about rotations is that they require practice while positioning requires actual knowledge and experience about pvp and new players, who played pve for some hours will already know their skills and rotations, no matter which class they chose. Overall mesmer is very good for starting pvp and learning the basics. The difficulty is very overrated because people see lot of class skills and don't really know what they do but to explain it it's enough to say: 1 and 2 = damage, 3 is CC and 4 is evasion/block. Using that many skills shouldn't be a problem after some hours of pve, so I definitely recommend the class for newbies, who want to get into pvp. In fact to have the best experience, you start playing pve with the class that deals the most base damage (warrior = easiest to learn, hardest to master) and end with the lowest damage but for pvp it's the opposite: start out with the lowest base damage class (because it offers the best range, utility and sustain balance) and end up playing the highest damage class (lowest range, utility and sustain balance but also most rewarding because of the damage).
