Lets Talk about FlicFilm! Aurora 800 and Street Candy Psychedelic 400 35mm Review

Ғылым және технология

In this video, I discuss and review the latest products from the Canadian Film company Flicfilm. I tested out rolls of their two new color film products and I've compiled my thoughts on each! Street Candy Psychedelic 400 is a desaturated, vintage-vibey novelty stock with a thick grain structure and great contrast. Aurora 800 is one of my new favourite 35mm filmstocks, with great color fidelity and a fine grain structure. Throughout the video, I'll show examples of each stock, both edited and unedited.
I talk about these new products, as well as a few of the other products Flicfilm has to offer. At the end of the video, I talk briefly about flicfilm's company ethos etc, as well as their business venture with Street Candy!

Great review! Can’t wait to try this. Like everyone else I’m looking for Portra substitutes. Love the Elektra as well and hoping the Chrome will be good. Yay to Canadian businesses that support my film obsession!

Totally sold on Aurora, that's stunning. Sounds like most of these stocks benefit from underrating...as pretty much all negative stocks do ;-). I never knew a pro shooter that rated anything 400 over 320, and most would rate as 200-250 ISO.

I've been a big fan of Elektra 100 since I got into film last year, so I rushed to try Aurora 800 when it launched, and I adore it. Aurora just has such good color, and handles shadows and midtones so nicely. I've shot it at 1600 in a high contrast area of street and it was some of my favorite shots. So much range to work with editing wise. Also, I'll go and tell you that while I don't care what type of film stock Aurora actually is, I will say that in spite of what you mentioned, it is not possibly Portra. It has different character, and in my opinion, nicer character that makes it useful for far more than just portraits

I bought five rolls of Aurora 800 from Brooklyn Film Camera at $15 per roll U.S., and so far have shot/developed and scanned one roll. I'm 99% sure it is the same film as Lomography Color Negative 800 and Kodak Max 800 from disposables by how it dries and scans- which is one of my favorite 35mm stocks, so no complaints here.

I've shot Flic Films Electra 100 and their slide film Chrome 100. I haven't seen Aurora turn up where I live yet, but if it's the same as Lomo 800, I'm not surprised you loved the stock, because Lomo 800 is the Goat.

I paused the video at 1:30 and went to Downtown Camera’s site to check prices for Flic Film. For Elektra 100, Chrome 100 and Aurora 800, the prices are : $17, 21 and 22.50 CDN respectively. I don’t consider that affordable imo. I guess that’s the Canadian economy/ prices. Why isn’t anyone selling 24 exposure rolls anymore to make things a little bit more affordable?

Downtown Camera is a bit pricey; Studio Argentique is currently selling Elektra 100 for $12, and I've picked up Chrome 100 for less than $20 at a local camera store a few months ago. It's definitely more expensive here, but it's not as dramatic as it might seem. Kerrisdale Cameras has 36 exposure Gold 200 listed for $15.99 on their website, which is $11.69 USD at the moment. Freestyle Photo is selling it for $10.99 USD, which is pretty close. Weirdly, Fujifilm (well, "Fujifilm") seems to be much cheaper in the US than it is here. Ilford seems to be about the same price.

@@XCVGVCX one roll of Gold 200 $15.99😭 when I used to get Gold 3pack for $15 at Walmart😭 ouch! Downtown Camera is in my area, so ordering from Studio Argentique would probably end up costing me the same. I gotta say though, they have the Kodak and Fuji disposables for a lot cheaper than near me. Like $10 cheaper!

I recently shot a roll of Aurora 800 of portraits at a Renaissance Festival. They turned out nice especially in more subdued overcast light because it gives the colors a bit more punch. Especially the reds. I think in contrasty light it might be overwhelming for portraits unless you are photographing colorful street scenes. I had the negatives lab scanned and printed and the skin tones were a little too red so I’ll be re-scanning them myself.

I don't often say this, but Aurora 800 looks amazing, and Flic Film is a good person from what I've seen. I still need to get my hands on their MQ-19 developer. As for what Aurora 800 is, what is on the negative rebates that often will give a clue? But I will have to get my hands on that Aurora stuff for a try!

I tried a roll of Aurora 800 in NYC recently, and really liked it, much more than Vision 3 with the remjet removed. I only got 34 shots off my roll, but I've got 1 more roll to try. I do wish it had DX coding on the roll as the camera I was using defaults to iso100 without DX coding and will not let you set it, had to max out the exposure compensation.

Oooh Aurora 800 is perdy. Yes, I am definitely curious to see what you turn up in your experiment. I've heard mostly negative things about Portra 800, and I tend to avoid 800 ISO color neg in general, but this has my curiousity for sure. I like Flic Film, they do a good thing in general, even a little thing like re-spooling Ektachrome and selling it cheaper is a nice option. Okay, I won't comment about how cheap film used to be, but I will comment for the benefit of public awareness that color film can be had for under $5 a roll (36 exp) today if one doesn't mind bulk rolling, and processing Vision 3 in ECN rather than C41, or just using a remjet removing pre-wash. It'd be a hefty up-front purchase, but the long-term savings bring it down to under five bucks a roll. It requires some time and some work, but it can save hundred of dollars if you expect to shoot a lot of color. Just sayin' it IS an option. ;) Another solid video, Yvonne. Cheers!

If you just want to try it and don't need the extra ISO, shoot it at 400. Color negative film usually handles multiple stops of overexposure pretty well and a single stop more light shouldn't really be noticeable. Developed normally.
