    It’s all about jetting that’s it. Those could be great for your setup. I don’t think valve size is a gauge to work with - of course it is but reality says you can get many varieties of setups functioning on the same valve size . It all goes back to where do you want your power band . A large venturie will be soggy on the bottom end and awesome in the higher rpm range . And vise versa for a smaller vent . The venturie effect is squeezing the air through an opening where it speeds up on the other side - this aids in port velocity for lower rpms and also vacuum to pull fuel out of the bowl. But can become a choke at higher rpms. On a big vent you loose all sorts of port velocity on the bottom end but gain the loss of a “choke” on the top end so it flows and flows. All about drive habits and just what you want to achieve. IDAs can be the best of both worlds if setup correctly. 44s with 36vents is a strong all around setup . I ran 44s with 32vents for ever such a good setup for my little motor . I think the board with flow is not functional if the information is not consistent when comparing . I also think carbs are easy - need to do a video of what is what and why things are happening when they happen.

    Well said sir! That’s pretty much what happened, large vent on this setup absolutely flew mid through upper rpm band but was soggy down below. Of course I needed to up the idle and main jets some more. However, I don’t race this car and street drivability is important for me. I ended up putting my 44’s back on for now. I know it could be better than what it is but all around it’s great how it is. I figured I’d see how these perform and for the price I couldn’t go wrong. IDA’s with 36 vents would be perfect but then I’d be out cnc machined intakes 🤷‍♂️ Sometimes it’s just best to leave things alone but then that’s no fun 😂

    Thank you for showing these off to the community, I'm sorry the carbs didn't work out for you, I know that you have to pick your battles on what upgrades you want to make work. I had the same issue with 48 IDA's prior to installing 37mm Venturi. The way the 48 IDF's were out of the box you would have needed at least a 70 idle jets, and with the large Venturi and FK8 cam your idle might have settled in around 1200'ish RPM this is fine and well for the strip but is just not particle for a driven street car.

  • @VWJawbreaker

    @VWJawbreaker

    3 жыл бұрын

    100% correct, this would have been perfect for the strip but not practical on the street. They did great on mind and upper rpm, just no low end torque and some drivability was lost. We live and learn, we wanted to see what would happen and now we know.

    Well, since I screwed up by ordering these with a bigger venturi, the low end performance was blah. I could have spent another $100 and bought smaller vents but decided to sell them instead. In all reality, and my driving habits, 44’s with 36 vents are a better choice. With that said I know a few people who have had great success with these carbs as long as you bench clean / set them up. If you need a dual carb kit, I’d recommend buying a kit instead of piecing it together.

    Ahh Dual Carbs... as soon as you said 48's I thought about port velocity and jetting. Some one should be able to supply you with vents or have a shop spin some out on a lathe. likely you will need to jet up on the main and drop the air a little. You can get bigger vents for your 44's or have your current vents bored out to say 38mm you will need to bump up the main and drop the air jets some as well. Idle jets may need a bump up too if you cant get it to adjust with the mixture screws. CB has that update kit for the IDF'S that changes the secondary vent to a spray bar and it comes with new vents and jets. but that kit would kill your bottom end too. I found stock idf44mm carbs on the street are just right for me. I run very similar engine to yours. A set of CB ultra wedge ports with bigger intake valves would do the trick too. I have a sweet set of gene berg 52's that I would love to run but would have the same issue as you right now. manifolds linkage vent size ect. Sad to say for me the next step is fuel injection or turbo or both to get more power and keep drivability with out tearing my motor down. thanks for sharing I am also not an expert but enjoy and appreciate what you are doing.

    Hey Scott! I haven’t used the empi electronic ignition yet. I know a few people who have and it’s been hit or miss. What I did, because of the price of the Pertronix and my cheap 009 copy had slop in the distributor shaft, I spent a total of $199 and went for the CB Magnaspark kit and haven’t looked back.

My engine compartment is really cramped---some have suggested I cut "windows" or portholes into sides of engine compartment to let me tune them easier. Right now...its pretty damn hard to do anything...any thoughts on this. Will holes like this compromise rigidity---any other alternatives for adjustment and tuning?

    I’m right there with you and with large hands it was about impossible to adjust the carbs and when I got a clogged idle jet, we’ll that was a nightmare. The nice thing is the Magnaspark is fully customizable and can grow with you as your needs or engine combo changes down the road. I wouldn’t recommend the slip in 88’s as the wall are too thin and the engine will run hotter. The machine in 88’s, well you mine as well machine for 90.5’s or 94’s at that point. • @VWJawbreaker

    That can be a long answer but the short of it is, the emulsion tube is used to maintain the air fuel ratio at all speeds.It consists of a well with main metering jet at its bottom. The jet has holes on its sides.It is in communication with atmospheric air. Initially air is drawn through the holes into the well and fuel is emulsified.

    Yep you’re right, but if enough of us demand parts be made in North America.? We all need to collectively push for a higher moral standard from those rich company owners, they can afford to make less profit and create more jobs here! Besides I personally don’t want to support a communist country that pollutes the environment using sweat shop labour! Stay safe!😷

    @@trevcessna1723 right there with ya man.... I’d rather pay more knowing that I’m supporting our country and having the parts made to a higher quality standard.

    She didn’t want to idle correctly due to the size of the venturis.... so much air moving through the carbs. However she would scream even more at higher rpm’s.
