No matter how many times I re-watch this episode it still gets me crying everytime ;; since it's so relatable to think once in a while about how average I am compared to many others. SO PROUD OF YOU TANAKA 😭👑🧎🏼‍♀️

This episode alone is the core essence of Haikyuu for me. It shows how far determination can get you and how much life can affect you in whatever you do. Tanaka is an inspirational character.

I also love how it doesn’t shy away from the fact that everyone gets depressed, whether it’s often or infrequent. And we all gotta get through it

The heartbroken scene was her realizing that Tanaka was always honest, so if he was truly interested in her romantically, he would have said so (and he didn’t, because he actually loves Kyoko), hence why she said she really did have her heart broken, because she realized she actually doesn’t have a chance with Tanaka.

21:50 finally found someone who interpreted what kanoka really meant by that, a lot of creators miss that and I don't even blame them because it's very subtle, but still Lindsay somehow picks up on what kanoka really meant, AWESOME

Lindsay have good memory. She say that line to her cousin after the misunderstanding incident in front of the hotel. I think she mean that because Tanaka is honest and straightfoward, there is nothing to infer from his action. When he suddenly try to end their interaction when they just met after such long time, she conviced that he don't have any romantic feeling on her. That why she say it again, because she probably just reminded how much she like his personality and mental fortitude. Edit: You know what, i comment to quickly before finishing the video. Big mind Lindsay have explain everything once again.

Ryu's childhood friend was about to confess her love for him before her cousin walked up. But right before that Ryu expressed that he has his heart set on someone else and later ran off. At that moment she felt like she just got rejected, therefore feeling heartbroken 💔 😔 but she brushed that feeling aside, cause she didnt come here to fall in love~ Now, at this current match, she's witnessing everything that made her fall for him in the first place and again she is faced with the idea that, yeah... she really did just have her heart broken by his previous rejection. It's actually kinda sad... 😭

As I took it, the distinction that she really did just have her heart broken was because in the last few episodes we see: she never actually got a chance to tell him her feelings, her friend keeps encouraging her to not give up, Tanaka says "forget about what I said" ... so even though she didn't come to fall in love but to win, she was probably thinking it might just work out she still could do both. But seeing Tanaka being Tanaka drove home how sincere and determined he was, and she realized if is heart was set on another he wouldn't waver.

Isn't it amazing that Tanaka, while recognizing that Kanoka is an awesome, beautiful girl and player, doesn't "go for" and "settle" just so he can have the high school romance that he is dreaming of? "Just because there's a chance" doesn't mean he'll go for it -- he'll go for the one he wants, even though it seems unlikely and hopeless. That's his determination. It's actually quite cool that Furudate included this in a manga largely to be read by young boys.

The ball was technically still in play because Karasuno had last touch and it hadn't touched the antenna (or fallen, obviously). So when Kageyama crossed onto the Inarizaki side (but not inside their line), that's legal and Inarizaki cannot make any moves to hinder him while he's doing that.

i like that kyoko had the sake thought as the girl who likes tanaka they were the only ones who weren't worried for him, not even for a second and they basically had the same reaction, kanoka said "it's ok" before he spiked because she knew he would make it and kyoko was the only one who wasn't surprised when they showed everyone's reaction

Fun Fact: In season 2 after seeing Bokuto's insane cross, we saw a glimpse of Tanaka trying to imitate Bokuto's hand when he does a cross spike. The foreshadowing man!

Tanaka is not a truly excellent player in any technical sense, but despite that, (along with Daichi) he’s Karasuno’s paragon of consistency. He’s always positive, always persevering and supporting others. And he definitely takes on that role wholeheartedly because he loves his teammates, but it’s also doubly convenient because forcing himself to be that person helps distract him from his insecurities. It helps him to not internalize too much when things go wrong. However, regardless, sometimes things do go wrong and you get down on yourself, and this is the first time we really see how Tanaka responds to serious adversity. The first Seijoh game touched on it, but this is the real deep dive. Faced with some truly amazing players who view him as a weakness, it can be discouraging to be reminded of your limitations. But Tanaka’s strong, consistent, amazing attitude is his one excellent trait as a player, and with the help of his teammates, that lets him power through. One last thing that I love about this sequence is Tsukishima’s role. He passed to Asahi instead of Tanaka because he thought Asahi was the better option, but he was well aware that doing so would badly affect the spirit of the average player. But he knows that Tanaka isn’t average, and through his experiences with him, he knows that he’d be able to keep his head up after that. So he isn’t being ignorant at all here - he just has full faith in Tanaka’s mentality. [from AJ's review] As for Kanoka's heart being broken, it's because she saw how honest and straightforward Tanaka is and so now she realized that Tanaka will be loyal to the one his heart is set for (Kiyoko).

I wouldn't say they left Tanaka's backstory/arc to last. There are a few still coming and it's going to be awesome.

This is why tanaka is my favorite character by far. I want to be like him. I've been waiting for this episode.

This episode is a love letter to all the players in the audience. Volleyball is about that last centimeter, that last tenth of a second. Every play counts, but you have to keep your body and mind active for like 2 hours, 5 seconds at the time. Everyone goes through something during a match, with highs and lows, but when the opportunity arises, you have to be ready. Tanaka is the heart of this team, I felt it was right to dedicate this kind of episode to him

in the manga there are TONS of panels of people watching the game on tv, phones, pcs, etc. all through the match. It's pretty cool to read like that. That's why they did the ed like that

Kanoka saying that she just had her ❤ broken meant that she understood that Tanaka will not go for her just because he "has a chance." On the current game, she witnessed that Tanaka will always try and try until he can do it and that he is a devoted person. So it means, he will pursue Kiyoko since he already told her earlier that he had his heart set for someone else.

Love the series so far, if you guys need another sports anime after, I'd love to recommend Diamond no Ace. My second fav behind Haikyuu!!

That's what Lindsey was partly right about. Kanoka realized how honest and straightforward Tanaka is and she finally realized that she didn't stand a chance because he still has true feelings for Kyoko. It's just more from their point of view. Even if it was obvious to Tanaka about Kyoko, I'd say he's always at odds with himself over Kanoka.

I am a Japanese Haikyu fan. The lines that may have been broken heart are not because I felt Kiyoko Tanaka. When I saw Mr. Tanaka, who had been openly facing volleyball since he was a child, and witnessed that his attitude did not change, I think he lost his love in the sense that he lost to volleyball.
