Rocky Horror's actually a great comparison. I've been having an issue trying to liken this film to something that already exists, and is loved, and Rocky Horror is perfect. While The Spirit isn't a musical, they'd most definitely be at home in a late night double feature picture show.

In fairness circa 2008 they hadn't yet figured out what kind of superhero movies actually work. Producers were still experimenting with various formulas. Also Frank Miller was not yet viewed as a has-been. Heck someone probably said that its a good idea to have the director be a comic book artist. Hindsight tells us otherwise but back then.

Frank Miller thought that style and novelty equals entertainment. He miscalculated.
