I bought the first two seasons on dvd. Wasnt born til 1980 so didnt watch it new. Love the show. A shame Beth was a very beautiful woman but cigarettes killed her . Wish there was more on Vic Tyback but not a lot. All that is left is Alice and Flo. Do you belive Linda was jealous of Polly since Flo‘s character was more popular than Alice

She took all those totally inappropriate question from that nut-case of an interviewer in stride, and answered them honestly, yet never sank to the level that I'm sure the interviewer wanted her to. An incredibly talented actress and a lovely human being. much missed. Rest in peace to rise in glory, Beth Howland.

I say Vera's character was the most interesting - I feel because you needed to go deeper to "get" her. Not just an on-the-surface type of person regarding looks or blatant sex appeal or talent; she was uncanny in her observations. I liked her writing numbers in the air when she did math :) And she wasn't stupid- I'd say "dumb as a fox." Flo was a riot, no doubt, but Vera had her own dimension as a character. Would have been a much more creative and unusual series if Vera had a spin off. Vera interacting with all type of people and situations/issues and offering her own perspectives. Better than the sort of bland/silly story lines many of the early 80s sitcoms had.

Many TV sitcoms have characters who become the breakouts - they really stand out among the others in the cast. Examples: Florence- the Jeffersons Flo - Alice The Fonz- Happy Days Laverne & Shirley - Happy Days Maude - All In The Family Urkel- Family Matters Sondra - 227 JJ - Good Times Shirley - What's Happening Many got their own TV series spin-offs - some good, some not too successful. (Shirley, Flo, Florence, Maude, Laverne & S)

It's different because interviewing an actress or celebrity back then wasn't the a$$ kissing session it is today. "Your hair looks fabulous. Who are you wearing?" Also the actress doesn't launch into her soap box issues just because she has the forum. None of that nonsense. Good for this interviewer.

The "Flo" episodes are streaming and there are a few on KZread!!! I liked "Flo"! Even though it's VERY honky-tonk, it just proves how good Polly Holliday was, she made that show good. I heard that Linda Lavin didn't like that Polly Holliday got so many jokes on "Alice," and wanted her off the show. Diane Ladd was getting a lot of attention, too, and it just so happens she disappeared after a short time. And then the final waitress ended up being very hum-drum.... I don't think that's a coincidence!

Sweet woman. I couldn't stand her character "Vera" on Alice though. Her character made this sitcom unwatchable for me. Such poorly written jokes for her, and the extreme stupidity of her character was more annoying than endearing. It's a shame her character and lines were as bad as they were. It was so embarrassingly bad, that I'm surprised she kept doing this show through multiple seasons.

I have to agree and I am a huge Alice fan. Stuff like "Leaping Lollipops!" is just dumb. Not clever. Not funny. Just stupid. Also the constant crying and freaking out. I know the original Vera in the movie did that but for the next 9 years too...got old.

Oh, bull. Beth Howland as vera sure as hell delivered her share of funny lines throughout the series' run. Case in point: Alice, vera, flo, mel and marie (mel's on and off again girlfriend) are trapped in a mountain cabin with a tornado heading straight towards them. Anyway, they all seek refuge in a bathtub that's been turned upside down and has been being used as a supper table. While they're all huddled together inside the tub, vera mentions to everyone how it reminds her of when she was a little girl and she'd take bubble baths with her cousin melanie. Alice trying to be pleasant during a tense situation replies "that's sweet, vera." Then, here it comes, vera says "Actually it was weird. Melanie was 38." The audience ROARED with laughter. Vera was sweet, ditzy and on many, many occasions, very amusing as well.
