Hah, the BSF farming is quite interesting. I actually started a research project on it back in 2006. It didn't go far as it was just myself and another student with no academic leadership, but the research was solid. We just didn't have the resources or long term involvement to see it through at the time. we did build a full greenhouse, larva beds, and started a colony. Our end goal was to produce biofuel actually and that is where it ran out of steam.

I believe everyone knew that fish ate insects from the jump but, there are feeder insects like crickets, mealworms, waxworks, roaches. And there are feeder fish, rodents, and lizards that are breed to be fed to other animals. And I have freeze dried mealworms that I feed to my Tegu and the bottle says “Freeze Dried Mealworms for birds, reptiles, and fish” so just feed the fish plain insects live or dead.

It seems like a risky business, but if done correctly I can see it making a lot of profit and a way to benefit the country or world. They should also create fish manure soil, that way they can broaden whatever they're suppyling.

They're eating food waste thrown away from farms, households etc, so its cost efficient. And since people simple DEMAND all the fish they can inhale, you could say yes. It would be more "practical" to just eat the soldier fly larvae though, or stop throwing away as much food.

  • @Imtotallydiggingthis

Considering we are emptying the oceans of fish, is it actually practical to NOT do this? We will have to start looking to insects if we are to feed the world population. And it might even be as a protein source for humans. Chewing on a worm might not be too tempting, but in the shape of a burger, does it really matter as long as it is juicy and tasty? ;)

If you cut DNA from nuts to wheat, ppl allergic to nuts might now be allergic to wheat. And if they've been made with pesticide-like qualities, how can we say that they might not also irritate some people's internal digestive tract?

We aren't facing a food shortage because of the lack of resources, we are facing most of our economic problems because of bad resource management, not lack of resources. I'm not going to say whether its intended or or just a result of stupidity (although i actually have an opinion on that) to avoid making the argument political, but the earth we live on has the resources to support about 21 billion humans, 14 billion more than what we already have, so we don't need to find alternatives for our diets, we just need to handle our resources better.
