This story seems to be a metaphor for the lost innocence of soldiers. Given the time it was written, it seems a reflection on WW2. A story about a young kid who thinks they know what they want, indoctrinated by rigid cruelty, experiencing death and blood, ending up miserable and completely exiled from their society. I'm not the only one who sees this, right?

28:14 sheep really don't like to adopt other sheep's babies sadly. Modern sheep farmers have to make makeshift birthing corrals to separate all pregnant sheep when giving birth, and if a lamb slips out of a corral into an adjacent one, the other mother will attack it as an intruder trying to steal her baby's milk. Not sure if it's only certain kinds of sheep, but that is an issue with them, and so if a baby loses its mother it's very hard to find a foster mother who won't ignore or attack it.

Pretty sure that's only certain types of sheep or certain situations. As I've seen farmers relocate lambs to different nursing mothers and it worked fine. It mostly works with very young ones though. They cover the lamb in the same birth scent and give it to the sheep.

There's a sheep farm channel on youtube and sheep are stealing each other's babies all the time. And there was a mother who started headbutting one of its own babies and the farmer picked it up and put it in another pen right next to it and it got adopted no problem. She raises Rideau Arcott.

55:45 Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Used to chilling effect in this book and film. In the English version, the sheep reject Chirin because they apparently do not remember him and they are convinced that no fearsome beast like him could have come from their farm. In the Japanese version, the sheep reject Chirin because they recognized the bell he still wore around his neck and they could not reconcile the fact that the lamb they used to play with had grown up to become such a fearsome beast, which makes no difference either way, as it still conveys the same message.

I will say, not an anime purest or anything, but the subbed version is better. The translation is a lot more accurate, a lot of people that only know the English dub get confused as to why Chirin immediately changes his tune from wanting to avenge his mom to wanting to train with the wolf. The subtitled version makes it a lot more clear that Chirin still wants to kill the wolf, hes just training under him in the hopes of surpassing him. Different iterations of "student eventually beats master and kills him" is a Japanese story telling troupe. Including in revenge plot lines like this, in these the reason the master takes the student hell bent on killing them is either out of callousness and boredom, guilt and atonement, or to corrupt and groom the student to be their replacement in death (this is the one Chirins Bell most resembles). For whatever reason they changed the translation of the subtitled version and left out a decent chunk of the context behind both Chirin's and the Wolf's decisions and reactions. On top of that, the wolf actually has a name, its Woe. Also don't forget to watch It Was A Dark And Stormy Night.

@@blueflare3848 Saber has mentioned it's on his list, I haven't seen it in awhile either but I remember it being very good. It's actually something where most people say the Dub is kind of better because of the slight recontextualizing they do. In original Japanese the wolf is male and the goat is female, with MUCH stronger romantic Romeo and Juliet vibes. However the English dub made the goat male and shifted the relationship to a strong friendship which a lot of people agree is actually better done.

@@kaylawoodbury2308 Is that uh... Arashi no Yoru ni (One Stormy Night, it's translated as on Wikipedia)? There's a couple of versions of it. As far as the Wikipedia article is concerned, the goat was never given a gender in the original books, and a 2005 film (by Group TAC, the same studio that I believe also made all the Happy Science movies) cast the goat as male, but in the 2012 series (made by Sparky Animation), the goat was female. I have not seen either adaptation, or read the books. Seen a lot of fan work about it though.

@@ClownHoundII It's not, it's just the downside of natural selection for some species. The biggest, most aggressive males get to mate which makes bigger and even more aggressive males. The aggression is reward and based down, in the case of the deer the guy filming suspected from the size of the buck that it was his first rut. Ie. It was a hormonal teenager that didn't have the tiniest amount of self control which just made the aggressive behavior worse. As for ducks, they're just the spawn of Satan. The story of Chirin is one that shows what happens when you let hate and revenge drive and develop you. Chirin's adult design was meant to reflect that. No ungulate of this modern day grows horns like Chirin's. Antlers and horns of ungulates generally grow with a back wards curl or a curvature that aims to grab and wrestle. Yes, horns and antlers can gore, but their main purpose is to rack and wrestle. Chirin's horns were designed for only one thing. To kill. And he utilized them well. He achieved his goal, and in the end lost his purpose, and was left all alone with nothing and no one to turn to. The price of living a life focused on revenge.

I know the plot needed him to be angsty n shite......but to be 100% practical... .Chirrin could have just chilled at the farm for a bit. Its the Farmer that would have the final say. And all he would see is a big strong Ram that is completely fine with being near humans. And also in need of a shear........because sheep and Rams cant get rid of their wool themselves and it can be VERY DANGEROUS for them to have it on for over two years. Add in the fact that he would eventually find that the bell wold tip him off that he escaped A pen.......or better yet.....it wpuld be marked with his own mark and boom. New Ram to have around the farm. Bonus......he does the job of all his dogs by being a badass Ram that would ward off other Wolves, coyotes, foxes and other predators. I mean......hell.....donkeys they say are better than dogs anyway for protecting herds because they can graze with the herd, they are physically stronger than wolves, and have a massive hate boner for canines. Chirrin would be a happy surprise and a blessing for the farmer that keeps having to deal with Wolf attacks.

18:15 Wolfes often attack sheep without killing them, just leaving them unable to move. That way they create a living food storage. But killing a sheep and leaving it is probably not very common.

Well it is actually Wolves when they enter a barn with sheep will indeed Slaughter every sheep they see, it's often called sport killing oe killing for fun, but there is a reason for that. Once it kills sheep, they think others will migrate somewhere far, so they kill every sheep to store their food supply, same goes for foxes, jackals and coyotes. But irl wolves would run away from large livestock guardian dogs such as kangal, Caucasian shepherd, sarplaninac, tornjak, great pyrenese and many other, wolf doesn't want to engage in any fight, and even if dog wants to, they don't stand a chance

Barbara Goodson (AKA Baby Chirin) has been in a lot of dubs, but Pokemon is not one of them. She has, however, been in Dragonball Z, Naruto, and Akira.

7:41 - On the topic of that embarrassing, cringe-worthy Cruella live-make: even "justifying" her hatred of Dalmatians, she specifically targets puppies, so it's like if someone lost a family member to the Germans in WWII, and in revenge, they don't go after the people that did it, but German babies. Anyway, let's not forget, it is now canon that Cruella was the match-maker for Roger and Anita, not Pongo (which, admittedly, was silly, but it was for a way more fun fantasy-ish story). Also, I guess Cruella ages 50 years in one, apparently.
