How have I missed this my entire life? This show is great. The amount of sophisticated military tactics is astounding for a kids' show. Cluny is a really good villain. The show is able to use him and his minions for comedy from time to time while still maintaining them as a real threat to the heroes. Characters have strong motivations for their actions, actions have real consequences that last. Worldbuilding is sparse, but there's just enough of it to make the world feel real and lived-in. I like that many of the animals have different accents--it shows the world isn't purely homogenous, there are different cultures. I love the music too: it's good on its own and it fits the tone and setting of the show perfectly too. There are some problems too. Animal sizes are inconsistent. The foxes are the size of rats, but the cat is the size of a small cabin. What? One guy falls off a wall an dies, but Cluny falls from the same height on two separate occasions: once, he gets injured and has to spend the next episode in recovery. That's fine, but then the second time he falls he jumps up and runs away. It needs to be one or the other, the inconsistency is jarring. Overall, the first season is great. 8/10. PS: Asmodeus is terrifying!

I agree. The adder is a terrifying force. I don’t get why there’s those idle gags (Cluny gives his subordinates an order, and they just stand there, until he gets upset, and yells at them). To me, that’s the comedy element of the series, in regards to the villains.

To be fair those legit issues of size and anthromorphism are all taken straight from the book series where it was an equally confusing affair. One gets the feeling the author in general wasn't hard set on the rules of realism as he was whatever suited a character role best, if they were an ally, foe, neutral predatory animal, or some ally whose.mean to evoke awe and otherworldly eccentricity like a friendly giant or trickster spirit trope.

So I think both Seasons 1 and 3 will be remade in a movie and series format respectively... not sure about season 2 (Mattimeo). I understand not bringing it up for a show primarily for children based on a book series also primarily for children, but the idea of banning stories you don't like "for life" because of their content is quite possibly the easiest way to paint yourself as a dangerous person with an incredibly simple mind. Just don't watch or read it. Simple. There is no such thing as an "unnecessary" plot. The plot is always necessary because it's the basis of a story, and not every story has to give you a message(even though GOT does that incredibly well)

There is a tabletop RPG based on the series called Mouseguard. There isnt that variety of races though since animals are to scale (meaning a fox is something like the equivalent of a sphinx and an owl is the equivalent of a dragon). They might add in other playable rodents like rats and weasels someday, but right now theyre just NPCs. Theres also a really fun Indie Videogame called Ghost of a Tale, where you play as a mouse bard thrown in a prison by an unhappy rat lord. Its a stealth prison break game with lots of fun characters. If you want to play Redwall specifically tho, I imagine It wouldnt be hard to play D&D 5th ed and assign animals to the established races (dwarves=moles, humans=rats, halflings=mice, tieflings=foxes...)

These books mean so much to me. I love the Redwall series so much man I really don’t know how else to say it. The books showed me the real importance of reading. I have more nostalgia for the book series than Star Wars, cartoons, marvel, video games, childhood television shows I watched (and I was born in the mid 90s so we had the best cartoons) etc. I was like the only kid who read these books in my school so it felt like I just had this secret world I could visit when life was to much. Man thank you Brian Jacques for making such a great series 🥰

Theres a secret about Red Wall many don't know, and that, Red Wall is a Dimension that has a bunch of "Living Objects" like the Tapestry of Martin the Warrior, that update everything thats happening in the reality, and heres whats crazy about it -- Mathias noticed that the Tapestry keeps changing to reflect what recently happened, and even asks while everyone is gathered by it if anyone else notices -- but no one answers, and after that, in the entirety of Red Wall series, no one ever asks again about the Living Object, Mathias during his time at the Abbey was the only one to question the Living Object.

This series needs to be remade for TV properly. Yes, Redwall was a kids' book series, but more in the classic European folktale sense, with bloodshed and trickery. You can't condense that into 23-minute episodes within the limitations of Saturday morning television.

4:06:50 I always remembered this quote from as a kid. They make it clear that the sword was not magical at all (it was just a regular sword that rusted and broke with age, that was later reforged with metal from a fallen star that made it so durable and resilient throughout the ages), but as Martin stated in the books, it's just a regular sword whose purpose is to slay others. Yet because of the history of the people who wielded it and the battles it fought, it just became a massive symbol of power and became seen as a mythological object among others.

Even a kid appreciates when the media they watch doesn't treat them like a drooling moron with a braincell and a half. They can't understand or put it into words why when they're small, but once they grow up it'll be those handful of cartoons which they'll remember fondly. It's so disheartening seeing how cartoons like Redwall have basically become relics of the past. Cartoons that aren't afraid to show kids themes which they may consider slightly scary or uncomfortable. Turn on a kids channel these days and everything new that you see is safe and/or brain numbing to such a radical extent that it makes you wonder whether they were meant to be engaging for children or for pets. Seriously, Redwall is such a beautiful example of what kids' shows are supposed to be.

my son was 4 years old watching this, i would put my youngest down for her nap and my son and i would cuddle and i would doze off watching this with him. perfect entertainment, action . it kept his attention the whole time. He is 23 now and smiles with fondness at the memory of this show.

oh man. I remember this show from years ago on PBS... all those rainy days up in Oregon, watching it from the tv in my parents room while they watched the news downstairs. those were the good old days.

Years later, we're still ignoring the whole Cluny had horses thing.

This just popped up for me tonight. My son and I agreed; we don't remember anyone using horses in the Redwall books.

This is one of those shows that you vividly remember playing in one of those metal rolling stands that had the old TV and VHS in one of the classes you rotated to like music or art class in 3rdish grade and the whole class would get exited about it but then the teacher would say it was for the kindergarteners then pause it and you never found it ever again. This is that show for me 19 years ago and it's so nostalgic...

A beautiful masterpiece of a show for 3 seasons by Brian Jacques. Honestly wish pbs was able to fully fund the rest of his books into animated tv

Cool, but the animal scale is funny. So giant cats but tiny horses? Funny. I like it! Also does anyone else think the bad rat looks a lot like Jenner from the secret of NIMH?

A reminder that in this show, Foxes and Badgers are normal anthropomorphic animals capable of speech, commerse, fighting, ect but the lynx is a magical mythical creature that acts like its real counter part and is like some massive monster.
