Let's Try: Carcassonne! (Fantastic Boardgame, gone digital!)
Ойындар
To me, Carcassonne has exactly the right level of interaction to be competitive without being cut-throat. Really easy to learn and quick to play!

I am SO HERE for the Bitching about UI series. Hell, we should make it a podcast! =P
Wow. I've always seen this game around, but I just realized it's so me! I need to get my friends addicted to this. Thanks Quill for the guide and inspiration! Loved the photo finish.
This was fun. I wish you'd churn out more of these board game videos. It's nice to see you complete a game in one session.
So fun! I would love to watch a few more plays!
I love your boardgame videos. Still my favorites among your videos!
One of my first games bought after starting to work for Asmodee as a demonstrator. And that was thanks to you Quil

This video led to me ask for Carcassonne for Christmas, and my brother got me the Big Box! Good times ahead
5:57 Minor correction... You had a cloister (or monastery depending on localization), not an abbey. The abbey is in an expansion. Each player gets one to use in place of drawing a random tile, and it serves as a wild card closing any field, city, or road feature on a tile touching the abbey. (This is the only way to get a one-tile city.) You can claim the abbey to score as if it was a cloister. 7:43 Road meeple are robbers. City meeple are knights. Field meeple are farmers. Cloister meeple are monks. But, you're right. Ultimately the actual title for the meeple doesn't matter. Some of the popular expansions also add large meeple, mayors, builders, pig, wagon, and the barn.
I love Carcassonne :D One of my favourite game of all time. thank you for the video, and have fun with this awesome classic masterpiece (Old but gold, definitely)
Please do more, I really enjoyed this video!
Would love to see more of this!!
Carcassone is one of my all-time favourite board games by far.
Carcassonne is my favorite castle i have been there 6 times
This is great! Love to see more
It would be cool to see you play more Carcassone digital edition, Quill. This implementation of the game looks great.
Half the fun of Carcassonne is stealing someone's field without them noticing. And scoring big with 'their' field in the last scoring.
I live next to IRL Carcassonne in the south of France. The picture on the front of the box is an actual gate of the Walled City. It's Really worth visiting if you're ever in the area !

I've been there with my parents a couple of times, I can definitely recommend it
I have Carcassonne: The Castle, which is extremely similar except the playable area is enclosed by castle walls. One of the biggest differences is that if two players have an equal amount of meeples on a feature, such as a road, NEITHER player scores. Only the player with more meeples on that feature will score.
Carcassone was my first strategy game, followed by Catan. I have since bought way more board games than I probably should have. Now that my schools board game club has gone remote, I have even more games need to learn on VASSAL.
I have the hunter-gatherer version and I absolutely love this game!
I wonder when they added that recommendation that beginners avoid farmers. My (15 yo) dutch version just tells you how farmers work.

I think it's because of lots of play testing. We had house rules in my family, farmers suck, and everybody gains point depending on the meeple participating (I had two in the city, you had one, i get double the points, you get the normal amount)

Excellent video. Lots of fun and great explanations of a game I have never played. Only wish it had been possible to pause and comment a little on the AI's plays.
every time you said 'meeple' i heard wil wheaton's voice.
Hey, this game is on sale this weekend!
That's a really nice way to do fantasy maps
ME and my gaming frenemies meet up in our fav Pub and play Carcassonne all day long when we do not have any other war game or RPG going, always a good day :)
if you had used the 2 sided town piece to connect the two cities you would have completed your abby earning 12 points but only giving pink 5 points.
Best part of digital the backstabbing (oh game night. So many enemies made on the cardboard)
Another one please. Thanks.
Have you tried "ORX"? It's Carcassonne + They are Billions. There is a demo on Steam

This game is a nice twist on Domino rules.
I’m getting hungry with all those meatballs
Is a field the same thing as a farm or is there a thing called a field that is also called a farm?
Any chance you can show off the expansions?
Free base game you mentioned? It seems to me it's not free for every platform? Steam/google play/nintendo... ?
One more!
I played this once irl with some friends and didn't care much for it, I feel like I'd like the digital a lot better. easy for me to see the things than try to conceptualized them

This is definitely one of those games where the digital adaptation helps so much. Some versions color-highlight full areas where you're going to put meeple and don't have that human error where you mis-count and/or mis-score at the end of the game.

Also known as city planning 101.
Wait, aren't fields just a normal rule? I'm pretty sure it's in the rule book of the base game I own. I never even heard of the option of playing without them. Although I guess it might be because my copy is somewhat newer (although I think it's still at least 10 years old at this point) and it might not have been in the original from 2000.

It was in at the beginning, and turned into an optional IIRC, because fields are hard to teach to casual boardgamers.
Joining that city up would have given pink more points yes, but it also would have given you your abbey meep back =( Edit: you got it anyway heh
I remember playing a digital version of Carcassonne like more than 10 years ago. But this version looks very fresh and new, so probably a do-over.

why is it so difficult to understand what an isometric view is and what isn't?
Quill, you could have been more aggressive. Blocking builds is fun.
I feel like Catan is not the best choice to get people into board games. I played ticket to ride europe with my girlfriend and her family and everybody loved it. They ask me to bring it with me every once in a while. We also tried catan and everyone was bored out of their minds, including me. Keep in mind i love strategical games. Carcassonne on the other hand is a great game for beginners.
@tymmezinni

I think Catan's a regular suggestion because it's a bit more simple in the Eurogame category, so it's not as daunting as others can be. I think many do consider TTR to be a gateway game as well, though.
11:15 Don't 2 tile cities just score 2 points? Or was it a house rule all this time?

this game is on digital since 2017 haha
Please do more episodes, instead of a tutorial-esque one-off.
I have this on the Switch, and it’s horrendously bugged on end game scoring at times and for no rhyme or reason which is annoying which has made me stop playing it. Shame, as it’s a good version otherwise, but when it gives 0 point for completed roads and you can’t see the end game quick enough to check, it’s a deal breaker.
I remember spending hours in this on Xbox 360. And yes, the AI is just BS at getting the exact right tiles to screw you over no matter what difficulty you play on. It absolutely cheats like it is going out of fashion.
What I love doing when demonstrating this game, is to not fully explain farmers. Usually just one person then tries it with one. Then the best thing is when scoring at the end, and they are rather behind but with only the farm left, then I explain properly and they shoot to the lead. Best reactions always.
Loved the version on the Xbox360. Not liking the version they came out with for the PC. Too different. I wish they had ported the 360 version to the PC instead.

I'm so confused every time I hear people say this is such popular game on par with monopoly, I had never heard of this game before I played it once with my ex girlfriend, never played it since either, I'm convinced it's not out in my country because no one i know have ever heard of it either

@@GoundG If you are in a group that play board games like this than it's really weird that nobody knows it. It might not be that well known in the general population but it's a very well known board game in the board game community, even more than most other games that won game of the year. Although I guess these things also depend a lot on the region. The game is German after all and I think this mostly applies to Europe and is probably different in the US and other regions. This is after all a "Eurogame" and in contrast "American style games" are not as popular here and sometimes also referred to as "Ameritrash".

@@somegeezer Most board gamers consider there to be at least two tiers of board games. Monopoly and other Parker Brothers- / Milton Bradley-type games are on one tier, and those are pretty well known almost everywhere. For those on the second tier, Carcassonne and Settlers of Catan are probably the two most common games the second tier considers "gateway games" for introducing others into that tier.

I mean, your statement in your description is right...but like, it feels to me that the results of the game are more than 70% not-in-a-good-way randomness. I had a game where with 4 players I drew 4 monasteries throughout the course of the game, and drew them spread out enough to where I only had like 3 meeples dedicated to being a monk or whatever the proper term is. And then I just stomped cause all I did was get points from those and made sure to put farmers down in a way where no one could expand into a field without me at least tying them in farmers and I screwed all of their cities so they almost never finished. Easiest and most bull crap game I ever played. I got like 74 points and the closest person to me had like 32. I own the board game Carcassone. I realize its an easy board game infection vector and that its popular. I would still not recommend buying it if you do not have it already, nor any digital version of it. Its a waste of time.
OMG! This game, and especially the online edition is my favorite of all times! If you wanna play, find me there, I go by SexyKC.
