Great podcast today ladies xx What I'm going to say is probably pretty obvious and universal but I don't mind sponsorships at all as long as the person I am watching genuinely loves the brand that they are working with. Usually if not always the audience can tell if it is indeed genuine love and trust of a brand. Building that 'trust' with an audience is really important and is is what keeps us coming back for more content.

This was one of the most honest conversations about the business model that I've seen. Thank you for being that vulnerable. Money is tough to talk about! I genuinely appreciate when you share "forever" codes with brands. It removes the pressure to buy right away. Cheers.

On another note, I would just like to add that your channels are creating an important message. I actually found you Christina as I was going through my own financial crash and low-buy year. I wanted to inform myself more about budgeting strategies and that community really really helped me. In just...not feeling so alone and like I'm a crazy impulse buyer! If you look at research and studies on psychology, we as a society are just addicted...to everything...and there are many many people who have similar problems with consumption habits. I feel like these issues, that are also tied to financial literacy, aren't really addressed in mass media. You need to go through something similar or be very environmentally aware about the impact of fashion to go down this path. I think that is why it remains a niche. But it is a huge societal problem in developed countries and something we can not ignore if we are talking about sustainability. Over consumption and overproduction are some of the core issues pushing climate change. So every video, every new subscriber is a win for all of us. THANKS so much for all the work :)

Alyssa, I know that you were conflicted about it, but I think that the collaboration that you did with Brave is incredibly valuable to the slow fashion community! You used the opportunity to highlight a beautiful product with longevity and an ethical company! Both concepts are cornerstones of slow fashion so don’t feel bad! 💕

Its a job ladies and you should be paid. I dont mind sponsorships because I trust your judgments and we see you using these products over and over again. Sine is our Monica Vinader girl, Xtina is our AG1 or TruEarth girl and Alyssa is our Brave girl. Get paid ladies for your fantastic work! I loved this conversation 🖤

It has basically become a non-option for me to rely on thrift in two categories. My proportions, preferences, and needs are so defined and atypical in those areas that it’s just too rare that I find what I need to show up at work looking professional and feeling confident. I also don’t have much time to look for the perfect strokes of luck because of my life circumstances. I rarely do buy anything new because I turn over my wardrobe so infrequently and prefer to spend my money elsewhere, but when I do, I’m so glad to know what sponsors you three recommend because I trust you to have vetted the companies. 15:09

This was super interesting. Love the 'Neighbour down the street' that's so true in a society where we don't talk to our neighbors like we used to this way alous us to tun in to like minded people. My church home group w talk sustainability a lot and everyone is always asking me about sustainable clothing so i find myself giving tips i've learned from yourselves and other research. I don't like adverts but I also don't pay for my channels etc as i value spending my money on experiences with my family (and good sustainable clothes). I really value that you all have sponsorship but with brands your happy with and have 'tested out' that to me is fine, I've switched to tru earth and brands like everlane, other stories, Vija etc because of listening to and researching brands more, I don't mind you talking about things like 'the puzzle' because my Mulberry bag is my equivalent of this (had over 8 years and still love it). You don't go on about the sponsored stuff all the time so that's ok I realise you do this for a living and you have to get paid for that, It's my choice if chose to act on one of those items/brand or not. For me one video a wee is enough, I want to live my life and spend time with my friends & Family so watching one video from say 4-5 channels i follow, listening to this is quite enough in amongst my own work so one a week is a good balance.

I like the topic of sponsorship, because there is a lot of green washing, and what is my definition of sustainable might not be the same for other. To be quite frank i always side eyeing Sézane when people call them a sustainable company in there sponsorship because they launch so many collection per year, i know i' have their newsletters and I even owned a couple of pieces from them. On another hand I know a lot of small canadians designer and they dont have the ''sustainable'' stamp of approval BUT, they do very limited collection twice a year only and the clothing are made in Canada. So I guess it is up to the individual to make the call based on the information given to them. If a creators says something it is still the responsability to the consumer to check multiple sources and make the decision. Finaly, i'm always happy to used any coupon code for Kotn! ;) LOL

I did not watch utube until 2021 and I have noticed a change in the channels I tend to watch now versus then. To me the haul type are now so boring and promoting buying things and brands I don’t want. I have switched off notifications because of this. But I have also noticed that some of these channels have also softened or modified their content to present a more considered approach to buying new. As one who appreciates buying second hand for better quality I have gravitated toward the channels that support this view. When I can find a beautiful quality cashmere sweater for $6.00, it brings me joy. I always watch your channels first before others. Love that you joined forces for this podcast. Keep up the great work that you do!

You should get paid for the valuable content you create. Amen. I hope the three of you never doubt that. You reach so many people with such a valuable message. Clearly the professional content you produce takes significant effort and talent, and you should never feel apologetic about receiving compensation for that. -Jen

The question was asked, do we even need to explain about making money, etc… while I think this was all very interesting to learn how influencers make money, I do not believe you need to explain that you deserve a paycheck. I work, I expect to get paid. I want you to do as many sponsored videos as you want. If you have subscribers who fault you for that, maybe they are applying rules to you that they themselves don’t follow, as we all want paid for our work. You three have helped me learn to shop my closet and be more mindful of the environment. Never did either before you three! Be blessed, get yourself a raise if you can and make more videos!!!😊

I don’t mind sponsorships at all. If I’m not in a mood to listen to an ad, I’ll just skip through it and move on. I’ve gotten really good at narrowing the creators I watch to those who are honest and trustworthy so I have no questions as to the integrity of the sponsor. Y’all need to make money too, and I always love to support those I watch by also using their affiliate links.

I liked Signe's recent Skillshare sponsorship and I like language learning or other educational apps as sponsors. I don't like watch companies, quite apart from the fact I don't like their designs, who needs a watch these days with smartphones, etc. Wearing a watch is stressful and unnecessary.

I don't mind a sponsored post. I subscribe to your channels because you help me learn how to make quality work over quantity. So long as your sponsor's product is good quality and sustainable then I think its helpful to know who they are for when I need to replace something. A minor issue for me is that I live in Australia and I think its not sustainable to have product shipped around the world to me. So feel free to recommend a few quality sustainable global south products now and again--we have a few =).

It makes sense for creators on this platform to earn revenue from sponsorships and ads because that’s also how we get to see some quality programming on our televisions…through ads and sponsorships. That being said…for my own sanity and my bank account, I no longer watch content that includes a haul or paid sponsorship. I will immediately click off because if I know it’s a product or brand sponsorship on a favorite youtuber’s channel, I know I’m definitely am going to want the item(s) 😆. And I’m sorry to say I have to click off of the sponsored content on all of your lovely channels. I don’t need anything and I have enough clothing that I won’t need any clothing for quite some time, but seeing some of the sponsored content gives me the “wants” big time. I keep thinking about that statistic about only buying 5 articles of clothing a year from the Vogue article you referenced in a previous episode. Very sobering. With these self imposed restrictions I’m finding that there is less and less styling content that I can watch on KZread, so I find myself looking for smaller channels who dont have the sponsorships yet. Yes, the content is a little more “dirty” and a lot less slick, but if the styling advice is creative and organic…that’s what I care about and I’m a happy camper! I love finding videos of “My most worn items for the past 5 years” and others of that ilk without the sponsorships. Does that mean I don’t think that KZread creators shouldn’t make money for what they do? Absolutely not! It does, however, mean that I’m weak and I need to put my bank balance first as I head ever closer to retirement age. And…after all, by not clicking on sponsored content that I know will give me the “wants” is the most sustainable thing I can do 😉.

i'm not bothered by sponsorships in videos at all because i understand that you need to be paid for your hard work, as soon as I feel that that the recommendation is truly honest, and yes we all notice this.... actually i really like to be adviced about brands that are aligned with my values, that are very close to yours, that is why I've been following the three of you girls for a while 😊 sometimes is hard to know where to find products that fit all these values whenever you need to buy something, and your recommendations and experience with this brands is very helpful. So I am not feeling that you are trying to sell me something, I feel that you are helping to make a good choice if I need to buy something. Of course there are a lot of creators that really push to constantly buy whatever they are showing even if they don't know it or like it, but these people use to have a different kind of content and give a different message and values on their channel than yours. I don't use to follow them anyway so...

Thanks to all of you for your honesty and transparency regarding this somewhat delicate topic! I do think that everybody can understand the necessity to make a living, and it would be mad to expect quality content like yours for free. That being said, as a follower I do get tired of seeing too many sponsored videos back to back. I don't mind ads which are clearly marked as such and which I can just skip over if I'm not in the mood to see them, and I also don't mind recurring ads for stuff like laundry strips or even jewellery or whatever, because these don't trigger me to buy anything I don't needat the moment. However, if a video is painstakingly constructed around a sponsored item of clothing, to make the viewer feel like the product placement is 'naturally' ingrained in your usual content (like a styling vid, for example), it feels more off-putting because 1) I feel the need to purcase one specific item to recreate what I'm seeing (while I'm actually trying to curb my impulse buying!), and 2) it makes the whole video appear somehow ingenuine, even it isn't. So rather than working hard to to hide sponsored content, I'd actually prefer an open, maybe tongue-in-cheek adressing of sponsors or advertisements, and I'll gladly watch it to make sure you guys get to make a living 😊 have you ever thought about subscription-based content, eg. Patreon, to be less dependent on ads?

The 3 of you ooze integrity, and I have no doubt about the quality of the sponsors you reference in your videos because of your high standards. I tend to look at your sponsored material like i do your styling advice; not to be slavishly followed but to provoke consideration of what I have already and how I use it. Occasionally, I might buy a product, but only because I was looking for something in that category (e.g. laundry detergent) and trust your recommendation. I'm not sure if you have addressed this in previous episodes, but how did you come together as a group?

Oh ladies, you should never have to justify making an income! Creative work is often not paid well or is expected to be free and that mindset needs to change across all creative sectors. And transparency is key. I really appreciate knowing that it's a sponsor, when it's a sponsor and that's about it! I know Christina, you have had this discussion with us (community) and have asked those questions about taking on more sponsorship. But ultimately, at the end of the day if you can say you really like and support the brand, then it's an exciting opportunity to be able to work with them and like you discuss here, it's a way to make an income on time intensive work. I have never felt pressure to buy anything and appreciate that you all take the time to be selective. What I do notice, as I tend to follow similar channels, is that certain brands focus on influencers, so you will the same brands popping up around. But hey, that's ok too.
