Let's Talk About the New Big 12 Football Schedule Matrix

Спорт

Big 12 fans don't like it. Big 12 administrators do. What's the disconnect?
A little different of a video than I normally do, as you can probably tell. Very little editing, very little scripting, just a quick conversation about what the new Big 12 football schedule matrix announced by Brett Yormark a couple weeks back gets right and wrong. Mainly just a K-State fan waxing poetic about a game that really isn't all too important in the grand scheme of college football. But it's important to me, dang it.
Lots of Big 12 fans are displeased with the schedule's lack of guaranteed rivalries for all but four games. Since Farmageddon is one of those games, a newish sort of rivalry between K-State and Iowa State that has been played for over a hundred years, I felt like I could use my platform to yell at a cloud for a little bit and write some fanfiction about the pod scheduling system. I'm reminded of Master Qui-Gon a bit, though: just because I have the ability to speak, doesn't make me intelligent.
But I'm not alone. Oklahoma State and Texas Tech's new game isn't protected. The three eastern schools, West Virginia, Cincinnati, and UCF, don't have any protections to help their travel either.
So what are your thoughts on the new schedule? Good? Bad? Do I and thousands of other Big 12 programs need to get with the program or get out of the way? Let me know in the comments.

As a Nebraska fan who longs for the Big8/BigXII days, rivalries is what made college football. It's sad to see as super conferences rise, the focus is on the size of the market rather than than the size of the fan base. While Rutgers VS Northwestern might draw eyes based on market size, OU VS Nebraska would still draw more eyes even in the bad years. Media members fail to account how much a draw rivalries are, and even though more minor rivalries like Farmageddon exist and are pushed aside, even those can draw numbers, especially amongst the local viewers. I miss the old KSU Nebraska rivalry, despite it being heavily KSU lead and Nebraska dismissed. But as conferences grow bigger, new rivalries will have to be made. Nebraska now sees Iowa as a rival despite getting whipped for nearly 10 years. But CU & Nebraska still has bad blood. The new rivalries will have to be made if college football is to continue to draw numbers, and it's unfortunate that the conferences and media execs fail to recognize that.

Nebraska did beat Iowa last year to deny them of the Big Ten West. That was a hard loss. I feel the game between the two next week will be a tough battle as well. Iowa if they win or lose will probably go to the Citrus Bowl. They might play hard to deny Nebraska of a bowl game and take a rivalry trophy to Iowa City. As far as rivalries, I feel Iowa has the most with Iowa State, Nebraska, Minnesota, and the Badgers. The tough question is who is the biggest rival.

As a OSU fan, I am kinda indifferent to the new schedule matrix. With OU leaving, we really don’t have any other schools we hate nearly as much. We dislike Tech but personally it does not feel that much like a rivalry. I think one of the reasons I think the conference went with this schedule scheme is access to Texas. Every school wants a foothold due to the talent and population in the state. One of the issues with OSU’s schedule this year was the only Texas school we play is Houston.

I clicked indifferent only because as a fan of the sport from deep down south, I don’t know all the less nationally prominent big 12 rivalries but at the same time seeing only 4 permanent games I could tell there was something missing. I personally get why they are doing it like this obviously to integrate and make it one big conference instead of a bunch of smaller P5 programs clumped together with pac 12 schools and then some high performing G5 teams. While it makes sense, I do believe preserving rivalries is a must. The rivalries truly are what separate CFB and the NFL for me. NFL and really most sports in America don’t really have the rivalries like CFB does. As a hockey fan I think back to the late 90s Avalanche Red Wings rivalry, that’s what I love about rivalries the hated and competition, that is something CFB rivalries bring and pro sports no longer do. I prefer for 16 team conferences to use the 3-3-6. 3 OOC, 3 Permanent rivals and 6 conferences matchups. It works perfectly for 16 team conferences because subtract your team and you have 15 others, 3 you play ever year so now 12 teams in which you can play 2 sets of home and homes, either in back to back years or staggered years, but either way you play 4 years at school you play home and away vs every team in every stadium in conference.

Also another semi-rivalry I’m excited to see comeback is UofU vs TCU since we both were really competitive in the MW days so it’ll be entertaining to see if that has the some feelings attached.

One of the problems with the pod system is that the eastern pod feels unintegrated with the rest of the conference. It consists of 3 American teams and a WVU who hasn't been in the Big 12 that much longer. That leaves them more likely to relocate to another conference should the ACC or someone else want to expand. I think they could have preserved a few more rivalries while still having one big conference like Big Ten did.

I personally think that some of the rivalries that you mentioned might get added in the future. Part of me wonders if this new schedule is simply because the conference believes that they might add more teams, specifically 2-4 of Oregon State/Washington state/Tulane/Memphis/east Carolina/Appalachian State/Louisville/SMU/FAUone of the group of five Alabama schools. Not having a ton of protected games over the next few years means that if they do join it’ll be easier to integrate them into the schedule. I feel like after 2026 when the last of the Conference TV contracts are over and renewed. They might come up with a schedule with more rivalries, since it’ll be about another decade before the next round of realignment.

The ACC recently cut Clemson’s annual games against Georgia Tech (88 total meetings) and the Textile Bowl against NC State (91 total meetings). In my opinion, those rivalries are way more important and core to the identity of ACC football than our only preserved annual rivalry game against Florida State (36 total meetings), even if that game is perceived as more important by national TV and media since it has conference championship implications. Why the NCAA has not stepped up to halt this is beyond me. UCFs rival is USF, WVU is Pitt, Cincy is UK and so on. Fans want this, bowl games were great because schools could play out of conference schools and so on. I really hope the presidents of these schools see the importance of regional conferences and not super conferences or else this will fail miserably.

As a UF fan, I can empathize. We played Auburn for decades and it just vanished as a rivalry when the SEC changed scheduling. Now we're at risk of losing our rivalries with LSU and Tennessee past next season. Thankfully, Georgia is here to stay and FSU can't go away since they are out of conference (and because of Florida State Law), but it hurts to have to face all these teams I care little to nothing about. I get that it's a tough schedule to keep them all and all that, but I love to hate my rivals. That's part of the beauty of college football.

  • @davidsorensen2116

My thought was to exactly copy the NFL scheduling model for the "out of pod" conference games: Play one entire other pod, and then play the members of the other two pods that finished in the same pod position as you (so if you place third in your pod this season, next season you play the other teams that placed third). Doesn't guarantee all teams are playing each other every x number of years; but I'm not sure you really build familiarity with a team playing twice in four years anyway. On the other hand, you can develop a rivalry in other sports (e.g. men's basketball) and then have that transfer over to football so I can see some benefit of a structure where you are guaranteed to meet other teams in the conference regularly.

My favorite idea for pod scheduling is 3 in your pod, and then 2 from each of the other pods, probably rotating through which teams in the other pods yearly. Would still ensure you play every team every other year, and play 1 road game against all every 4 years.

Old rivalries and geographic closeness are super important for college sports, so conference realignment is an unmitigated disaster. Also, most rivalries develop over the course of decades and can’t be forced. So I agree with a lot of what is said in this video.

I totally agree with all points. As an ASU student/alum (getting my master’s), the “West Pod” would have a ton of beef and drama. Besides the obvious 2 rivalries, ASU/Utah already have a very strong disdain for each other, and ASU vs BYU could easily develop into a rivalry due to their “cultural differences” and the amount of LDS in the Phoenix Valley. Can’t exactly speak for UofA, but I’d imagine similar rivalry could be built up

Everyone Iowa State fan i know wants this to be a protected rivalry and its a game that is looked forward to every year. Also, we just had rivalry weekend the other week, where most schools had in state rivalries if not historical rivalries (iowa-Nebraska, Michigan-Ohio State) and who did Kstate end up playing that week? It wasn’t Kansas. Says it all if you ask me.

  • @pbb6283

I'm born and raised a Mizzou guy, (18 now, was 7 when we joined SEC) and even though we're in the SEC now, I've heard enough stories from my dad to have an affinity to deeply hate Kansas, as well as dislike Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Iowa State. While I personally can't remember those games they still matter to me because I can understand the history. With this scheduling system it kind of erases it, I much prefer the SEC's 3-3-6 pod system, I feel that would be a much better strategy to use. As you can get the longstanding rivalries which the fans care about, as well as fostering potential new ones with the added schools. A forced rivalry is not a fun one, Mizzou Vs Arkansas has been attempted to be shoved in as a rivalry, even given the name the "Battle Line Rivalry" (Stupid Name). Even though I feel more natural animocity towards schools like Kentucky, and Tennessee, due to the games which we've played over time, even though its only been 10 years.

You could give every team 3 unique protected rivalries (not pods) and play each other team every other year. It would balance geography and rivalries with creating new match ups and trying to create familiarity. Ex. Cincy plays ISU, WVU and UCF every year. That leaves 12 teams. Play half of the rest of the conference and alternate the teams on a rolling basis home and away over 4 years. The flexibility compared to pods is more obvious when you list out potential matchups: BYU - Utah, ASU, TCU Utah - BYU, Col, ASU UA- ASU, TTU, Col ASU - BYU, Utah, UA Col - Utah, UA, KSU KSU - Col, KU, ISU KU - KSU, ISU, OSU ISU - KSU, KU, UC UC - ISU, WVU, UCF WVU - UC, UCF, UH UCF - UC, UH, WVU UH - TTU, UCF, WVU BU - TCU, TTU, OSU TTU - UA, UH, BU TCU - BYU, OSU, BU OSU - KU, TCU, BU

All rivalries old and new should have been protected. For instance, why try to 'save' BYU vs Utah but not Farmaggedon (KU vs KSU)? Especially when Kansas State won the 2022 Big 12 championship. As someone in the Big 10, nobody is cutting the cord on The Game (OSU vs Michigan) so why is the Big 12 pulling the pull on these older rivalries?

The Utah-Colorado rivalry was more heated a very, very long time ago. The two teams shared conferences prior to WWII, then continued to play every year even after Colorado joined the Big 8. They stopped playing each other regularly in the 60s though. The Pac-12 hoped to bring the rivalry back, but Colorado hasn't been very good in that time span, with Utah winning 10 of the 12 matchups thus far. Perhaps that rivalry could regain some flair at some point. Having BYU and Utah in the same conference again will be good though. It's just unfortunate so many other great rivalries have been upended by conference realignment.

  • @chrissao_502

For these 16 team mega conferences, pods > face everyone once at home in a 4 year span > divisions. The Pods keep travel down and keep/create rivalries which are the bread and butter of college sports. The only even slight downside is that you are a player you don't face every team in a 4 year span. Honestly, oh well? I think the rivalries and traveling fans will do far more good than playong everyone once will.

As a Utah fan you’re not wrong but I can tell you it’s not “all love and respect” between Colorado and Utah. As much as we dominated against them in the Pac-12 we still don’t like them. The sad thing is since Colorado has been bad it’s been kinda of failed experiment reigniting the old 50’s rumble in the rockies vibe to the game. I mean yeah I don’t necessarily hate them as much as BYU because our two schools have more history together, but the rivarly was definitely there imo and starting to spark. I’m hoping that in the Big 12 Colorado will be able to get a little better and we can have better games. Anyways, enjoyed your video! Very well done and I’m very excited for the Big 12 next year! So many great schools and fanbases who are dedicated which I can’t say for every PAC school for the last few years.

Speaking of rivals and WVU. I’d say the game that could potentially be a rivalry matchup would be Texas Tech. The battle for the John Denver trophy as he had ties to both schools and Lubbock is basically just a more western version of West Virginia anyway. The WVU-Tech games have always had bad blood and have always been played hard. It would make for an interesting game for sure if a trophy was involved

UH is less than an hour from NASA (one of my R/TV instructors was involved with the development of VR training systems, I think) and UCF (which probably should have kept the name "Florida Tech") does a lot with NASA in Florida. Yes, Purdue has the Studen-Analog Training Program, but that doesn't make PU Space U. I think it was when UCF did their space-themed uniforms that I thought about there being a space-themed rivalry between UH and UCF. I think UH may simply not have been so focused on rivalries since the move to the Big East/AAC where the major conference rug was pulled out from under them with the CFP. UH has specifically wanted Big12 membership for a while. With that done, maybe a rivalry comes out. The schools that I think will really end up being UH rivals are OSU and TTU, as those were to first Big 12 schools to play them and TTU was the first of the old SWC schools to not just play them, but regularly schedule them. It was wins against these schools that really marked the resurgence of UH football.

As a Longhorn and Dallas fan, NFC East rivalries are up there with college rivalries tbh. I guess it helps in the NFC Easts case that they have help that division together better than most of the old ones and it's been so back and forth between all 4 the last 20 years or so. Like sure I think the Red River Shootout is a bigger rivalry than those but given the NFC Easts history their are some serious hate between those 4, I'd argue the AFC North games are also up there pretty high.

Hey Dalukes, another great video man. Even though it was stylistically more chill, you still delivered great information and insight. I do like the pods that you created, and I agree that rivalry makes this sport great. I think repetition is needed in the schedule, and without it, these matchups might just feel like another game. I agree with some that eastern pod does give WVU the short end of the stick, so maybe they get an extra protected rival with someone from the old big 12, but I think the central pod is so rich in matchups. I am excited for the new conference, but I do hope that heated rivalries can be generated.
