I had so much fun with Kellie. I realized how much I missed quilt shows when you could walk around booths and discover new products. I can’t wait to take a couple of these rulers for a test drive. Enjoy

I made my first quilt in 1984. I laid out my fabric, used a yard stick and and ink pen to draw out my squares and triangles, and cut them out with scissors, lol. My fabrics were the left overs after making clothing while I was in college to save money and from cutting off my jeans to make them into shorts for the summer. I had a job after college that allowed me to have Saturdays off, the first time in my life. I couldn't afford cable TV yet, so could get only 2 channels, one was PBS where I saw women making quilts!

I love Karens Quilt Circle! I have not used any rulers be it fmq or on the Cutie frame. To scared. I heard her say that she recommends a class first, but I don't know anyone here that teaches fmq with rulers. If she gets into the US, please let me know!

Thanks for asking the questions that I was thinking about. I have a machine that I bought from Amazon. I really want to try free motion. Now I am at the point where Kellie is saying that you shouldn't use a quilting foot. So now I am thinking ARGHH!

I think she was saying not to use a free motion quilting foot with rulers. Quilting feet are made to hold the fabric so that you can see where you are free motion quilting. The sides aren't thick enough to be safe with rulers. Feet made for ruler work have higher sides to keep the ruler from going over or under the foot.

Thank you. That makes sense. I suppose it would be an easier solution for me to get to know all of the tricks before I try something that I don't actually know too much about, and making a mess of my sewing machine. But I am very happy that you replied.

I'm trying to find the episode on Karen's quilt circle. When the person talked about a magnifying circle that you attached to your long armor machine so you can see your your needle to thread it. Thank you for your help!

As always I enjoyed ur interview but I couldn’t understand what she meant by the rulers. I wish she had shown us an example. When I think of rulers I just think of the ones a quilter does to put on the fabric & cut straight.

Is this when you are doing ruler work? If so, try lowering your ruler foot. Feel free to email me and I will help you troubleshoot!

@@sillymoonquiltingco.9577 sadly it is any type of free motion quilting. My stitches can appear very uniform on top, tried sewing different speeds but still I get eyelashes. My brother is great for sewing clothes and piecing but I cannot get it to FMQ. Thanks for the ruler advice but I need to get my basics fixed before I try a ruler. May get my mum’s old machine out and see if I fair better with that one.

@@KnitzyKitzy Oh, that is so frustrating! Firstly, if the trouble appears on the back, it is likely your top thread that is causing the issue. A few things to try: Change your needle, try a different type of thread - if you are using cotton thread, try a poly thread ( I use Glide, but there are other options out there). give your machine a really good clean including tension discs. When you free motion, if you have a speed adjustment on your machine lower that (I keep mine in the middle speed for free motion and ruler work). Another common issue is that people move their hands a little too fast and the machine can't keep up. If all that fails, play with the tension (top and in the bobbin) Hope this helps :)

Thanks for the advice. I’ll try moving my hands slower to see if that helps! No tension adjustment on my top loading bobbin but my mother’s machine is old school. Thanks for taking the time to reply again.
