The only thing that's truly important about concert dress is that it is absolutely, positively, 100% important and vital that your jacket interfere with your ability to raise your arm. This is crucial. Clothing that interferes with core functions of your work duties is deeply traditional. Its why martial artists wear necklaces, and surgeons wear mittens.

For wind players, (bow)ties/scarves and the clothing being too tight=not being able to breathe. For most people, just a general lack of flexibility makes everything impossible. My theory as to why some conductors conduct so differently the day of the concert: they can only think about how they can't actually move their arms in their clothes.

There were four total concerts over the course of two weekends. This one girl in my cabin who had been there a few times before brought like six extra dresses. She said she had "learned her lesson from being a girl in all white" a few years ago. :O

Butthole The Barbarian DUDE in the modern day Freud has been almost completely discredited like As Psychological Science wrote, “There is literally nothing to be said, scientifically or therapeutically, to the advantage of the entire Freudian system or any of its component dogmas.” AND his “Penis Envy” theorem was born out of the view of women at the time- that of passive creatures. Betty Friedan put it perfectly: “Because Freud’s followers could only see woman in the image defined by Freud - inferior, childish, helpless, with no possibility of happiness unless she adjusted to being man’s passive object - they wanted to help women get rid of their suppressed envy, their neurotic desire to be equal. They wanted to help women find sexual fulfillment as women, by affirming their natural inferiority.” (Sorry I know it’s a long quote) Not to mention his fabrication of data in most of his case studies and the fact he didn’t test his theorems. Long story short, the guy isn’t the most credible fella and most of his ideas don’t have a leg to stand on. Sorry for the rant, I’m not a fan of Freud lol Have a great day! :D

This is probably one of the dress codes that has aged the most poorly, and asking every orchestral musician to still wear it is honestly just abhorring and nonsensical, here's why: This is called a white tie, or full evening dress, which is a dress code reserved for the most formal occasions such as royal dinners or select weddings and is only worn during evening events (the morning dress being the day time equivalent). The proper attire for this dress code would include tailcoat, bibbed tuxedo shirt, low-cut horseshoe vest, satin white bowtie, and black trousers. Nowadays you almost never see this unless you're dining with the queen, attending some sort of costumed ball, or going to the world premiere of an opera in Europe. Back in the days, until the beginning of the 20th century, aristocrats or anyone attending any sort of formal dinner would be asked to wear white tie including the tailcoat. The black tie, or essentially a black suit with black bow tie and satin lapels began gaining popularity at the end of the 19th century. After some time, the black-tie dress code replaced white tie and became the new standard formal dinner dress (even though the proper term for black tie is still semi-formal, with white tie being full formal). The white tie didn't disappear, but its formality was bumped up even higher and would be worn even less often. The cummerbund is an even more modern invention, it has the same function as the vest, except it doesn't have to be tailored since it's just a piece of fabric that should fit everyone. It's supposed to cover the waistline - no sharp contrast between the white shirt and the black trousers, and thus making the wearer appear taller (visually, the body then becomes vertical whole, without the horizontal splitting line in the middle). So back in the days, 19th century and prior, if you were able to be a professional musician, meaning your parents had enough money to actually afford an instrument, pay consistent tuition fees, and actually have a space to practice properly (imagine industrial revolution in London) you were probably at least middle class, most likely upper class. Tailors were also much more common back then, meaning custom, tailored, well-fitting clothing was much cheaper, so either you were upper class and you already have white tie attires ready to go for frequent formal dinners, or you were middle class, and even though you're poorer than the upper class you can still afford this luxury, because relative to the present custom tailoring was just that much cheaper. The problem with wearing this nowadays is a) you'll never, ever wear this again unless you happen to marry into the royal family, is part of a costume society, an actor, or is famous enough to be invited to royal events b) It is very improbable to find a tailcoat off-the-rack (retail shops) c) if you can't find the tailcoat off-the-rack, tailors who can actually make you bespoke (fully custom) white tie attires are very expensive, charging you more than 4000 USD for the tailcoat and trousers. Meaning if you're a musician, there's probably no way you can afford this after already spending thousands on your instrument. d) If you downgrade to made-to-measure (semi-custom), or god forbid, rent a tailcoat, as twoset said it's still very expensive, and the fit would most likely be awful and it would look awful, which defeats the entire point of the white tie dress code - making someone look their absolute best and giving them the confidence to play their absolute best e)if the tailcoat and the bowtie isn't fitted properly, it will indeed be uncomfortable, again, it's defeating the point of the bespoke white tie, which when made by an experienced tailor should be comfortable enough for you to do aerobics So really, professional musicians need to make this optional, unless you're a soloist at an important concert. People actually look horrible in rented tailcoats and self-tying bowties, it's not preserving the tradition, it's really spitting on it.

Cummerbunds are there to hide the transition between your waistband and torso, its an alternative to a belt, and since it is made out of softer material then leather it is actually more comfortable to wear if you have to sit for long periods of time (like when playing in the orchestra). For the bow tie, learn to tie a bow tie, don't use pretied glued together ties they have a hard "centre" in the middle which makes them uncomfortable when playing the violin since this part can easily press hard into your neck. When you tie them yourself they are softer and you can make them looser making them more comfortable.

  • @leighannamarie3992

@@Roescoe No because they're only for formal dress and they're not damaging to the body; whereas corsets were culturally imposed upon women to make them shaped to be more flattering to men. This resulted in internal organ damage and physical and mental suffering. I'm sure your comment wasn't meant to be taken too seriously, but the damage done to women by the oppressive corsets, physical and mental, is much more serious than any discomfort men have felt by the imposition of neckties and bowties for formalities.

Lol other than pandering to some ideology through using "oppression" unironically your comment was very informative and I'm pretty sure that corsets were a large part of the amount of fainting that used to go on. Most places I know it's regular black tux jackets for the guys. Best tip I've heard is to get the jackets made for ballroom dancers, because they are more flexible (and maybe looser where the sleeves join the main part of the jacket) and allow for more freedom of movement. And it's harder than you think to find a long black dress that covers even your shoulders, let alone elbows, and doesn't show décolletage. I actually went shopping last autumn and literally only found *one* black dress that year. Go figure. They were all navy blue last party season, for some unknown reason. Black shirts should be acceptable, at least for amateur orchestras. And it makes no sense when the chaps are all in tux and the girls are in everything from posh frocks to trousers and a sweater.

The cummerbund is specifically to ensure that you do not get the white of your shirt peaking out between your trousers and suit jacket. It's about creating a uniform look, and helping to make the V shaped "shirt window" more visually striking. It's not meant to be seen and recognised as a cummerbund, and it's also why it can be replaced by a waistcoat, which SHOULD do the same (not all do) whilst also adding some style.

I wore a floor-length burgundy bridesmaid dress to my cashier job at Christmas time and Valentine's Day for the festiveness of it and got lots of compliments. Unfortunately, it was pretty tight with a lacy bodice, so my movement was limited. I can relate to the complaints of others in that way. I wore a knit green dress at Christmas time and got appreciative comments as well, but I had much more freedom of movement.
