Let's Talk About Freya the Walrus (UPDATE in the Descriptions)

UPDATE: I am aware of the tragic news regarding Freya and you can see my reaction here →
• Could Freya the Walrus...
I know this was a complex issue with no easy solution. In fact, I mention in this video that relocating Freya would have been very difficult. However, it is my opinion that there were other options and euthanasia should not have been entertained.
Freya the walrus became famous in Norway after touring the scenic coastline, sunbathing in local harbors, and of course... sinking boats. Locals flocked to watch this slumbering walrus sleep on boats for days or weeks at a time. Freya and her passion for napping on boats made her a local celebrity.
Unfortunately, locals and tourists were unable to keep a respectful distance. According to news sources, there had been several dangerous encounters with Freya after people tried taking selfies with the animal, or worse, tried to swim with her. This tragically occurs all too often, where people harass wildlife and end up provoking aggression from the animals. In these cases, it is always the animal who pays the price for people's reckless behavior.
I am a marine biologist who has worked extensively with walruses. In fact, they are my favorite animal of all time. To me, there are a few reasons why Freya the walrus would haul out on boats. And it’s not because Freya was a destructive animal or on a mission to ruin people’s nautical hobbies.
Walruses, because of their physiology and their life cycle, have a very serious need to haul out of the water. What normally happens with walruses is they will spend days at a time out to sea foraging for food. Sometimes even up to a week. And while they can rest while out to sea… walruses don’t sleep in the water.
A new study on the sleeping habits of walruses determined walruses engage in periods of almost continuous swimming for up to 84 hours. While other animals, including humans, can stay awake and active for this amount of time, to do this regularly and without forceful intention was previously unheard of.
www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna29616122
Once a walrus returns to land, or hauls out on an ice flow, they will settle into a very deep sleep that can last for days. I’ve personally seen a walrus sleep for three days straight. These boats, especially the inflatable zodiacs that are lower to the surface of the water, resemble ice flows. So Freya the boat sinking walrus was behaving perfectly naturally when she hauled out to sunbathe on boat.

    It was not neccessary. I spent 3 hrs observing her. She didn't seem to be disturbed by anything at all. The school year starts in a week, and it will start raining tomorrow. Nobody will be by the sea. They could easily have placed guards / volunteers to keep curious people away. Actually I think Freya must have liked the company of people, -as a substitute to other walrusses. I am so upset. She was so beautiful. I'm so ashamed of my country. Killers.

    A little while ago a walrus found its way into the Baltic Sea and all the way to Finland. It did not end well. The walrus was named Stena. It first appeared on 14th July in Hamina, Finland and caused a stir. We haven't had walruses in here before and nobody knew what to do. People were told to leave it alone and it will leave once it has gained some energy. Police was guarding it so people would't get too close. Stena did leave the shore, went for a swim, and ended up getting tangled in a net. Fisherman cut the net and Stena tried to climb onto the fisherman's boat, but the boat tilted and sank. Few days later Stena was found in Kotka, about 150 metres inland. At this point it was very noticeable that Stena was not in good condition. Vets and other people went to take a look at Stena and decided that something has to be done. Stena was very skinny, quiet and not moving much. Consulting experts in Norway, the plan was to anaesthetise Stena and move it to Korkeasaari Wildlife hospital in Helsinki. Sadly, Stena died during transportation. Stena was examined and it most likely died of starvation at the age of 25. Stenas fat layer was almost non-existent and its stomach was empty. Stena is going to be displayed at the Finnish Museum of Natural History along with its story. You can find articles about Stena searching "Walrus Finland". At least YLE has articles in english about it. We are now afraid that Freya is going to find its way into Baltic Sea and face the same fate as Stena. There's no food for walruses in the Baltic Sea. People are trying to figure out how to prevent walruses (and other animals) getting too far in the Baltic Sea. I hope that Freya doesn't find its way too far into the Baltic.

  • @KPassionate

    @KPassionate

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes I saw this story. It was very sad. I would hope/think that if we start to see the condition of Freya deteriorate in the way that Stena did that experts could be brought in to anesthetize, capture, and relocate/rehabilitate the animal. That is what I would do anyway.

    I don't think anyone would ever think that Freya is trying to get on top of boats to deliberately sink them I mean is so obvious that she is using boats to replace the ice flows she would usually climb on top of. It must be frustrating for her how this new weird ice flows as far as she is concerned keep sinking under her weight and yes she is beautiful.

    Is it possible she likes the comfort and security afforded by the sidewalls on the boats, giving her more of a sheltered feeling then the flat deck they built? Maybe they need to make her her own boat shaped float. Add some sides to that deck, forming a cradle about the size of the boats she has been choosing that she can nessle down into. I was thinking the color might be part of it as well. If they are used to hauling out on floating ice sheets then the white boats may have a natural color appeal for her as well. Just thought from an ameture, lol.

    Freya gets dibs. Needs her rems. They need to make mock up dummy boats. I think she likes the enclosed portion of the boat, so maybe if they made the barge bowl shaped she would use it. Walruses are highly intelligent, social, and tactile animals. If they are orphaned they bond very quickly with human caretakers. Freya was probably 5 or 6 and somehow found her way to Norway from Greenlandic waters. Now, I'm not saying there were easy solutions. She is going to lounge on boats in this situation as did Wally a year or so ago in Ireland and Iceland. But why exactly was this perfectly healthy walrus murdered? The high season in Norway is coming to an end. It's quite conceivable she would have headed back North towards the arctic on her own. If she couldn't survive trying to venture home that is much, much, different than being murdered in cold blood. And she was not a "danger to humans". This is utter nonsense. She was a danger to human boats. More of an effort should have been made to get Freya Floating boats for her use only. I am outraged at the Norwegian Govt and their assclown Minister of Defense for acting hastily and killing this totally innocent Walrus. It's disgusting and their actions should have significant consequences.
