@@gloriamcinerney7383 Well its not where i live. The rest of the world. Seems to think that if you can stop hateful speech. Than all the hateful ideas just magically disappear like Harry Potter Spell. If you throw somebody in Jail for being a Racist. Do You really think that when they get out. There going to magically not be racist anymore. If anything there continue to be racist. but not say anything. I rather have the racist right in front of me, instead of in hiding. That way i cant tell them to fuck off. Lets totally forget that the Wiemar republic had antiSemitic hate speech laws. And didn't actually stop Hitler. Not to mention that Nigeria want Hate Speech punishable by death. So you people decide if you think that's a good idea.

Literally the other day our school announced that they were making a new mandatory subject for gcse. It meant that I have to cut out one of the subjects I need for what I'm going into. So I started a petition to reverse this change which I'm sure we can all agree is well within my freedom of speech. It gained some attention and by the next day I'd been pulled into the 'bad kids room' and told off badly. I was literally getting in trouble for having a human right...

Right, I don’t think anyone is saying they should be able to say anything they want and not have people react negatively to it. If they are, they’re insane. You shouldn’t be arrested for saying an opinion though, or for misgendering someone (which someone recently was), or for posting a video of a dog doing a Nazi salute. You actually shouldn’t really be arrested for saying anything (except potentially direct threats of violence/deliberately inciting hysteria). The police should not get involved with people posting memes on the internet or calling someone the wrong pronoun, and the fact that they are doing these things in the UK is deeply disturbing. People getting upset/viewing you negatively/excluding you/being offended over something you say is fine, that’s their emotions and their right to free association. But someone should not be punished for offending someone/a group.

Richard Pryor had a very hard childhood, and his comedy reflected that emotionally. it’s different from a middle class upbringing and especially an upper middle class emotional experience. one definitely empathizes, but to feel it is different. humor needs to come from the gut no matter where you come from, but some people just ‘know’ where that is. this is not saying what i wanted it to! As soon as the consequence for speech becomes legal and you support that legal consequence you become an advocate against freedom of speech. How anyone can say a hate speech law is a good thing is absurd. How people can say hate is a bad thing is absurd. I can bet my entire house that their are things these people hate (Nazi’s, Rapists, murderers) but as soon as someone has something they hate that someone else likes well then, that’s shows the whole stupidity of a subjective “hate speech” law.

We dont have absolute freedom of speech in the UK.I mean the Count Dankula case proves how daft our idea of "freedom" of speech is in the UK.The fact that the state has a say on whether or not something is offensive or undesirable sets a very dangerous precedent. In theory ,hate speech laws do come from a place of concern and protection of minorities within the UK ,but I hate the fact that it is just that-LAW. Freedom of law does not mean freedom of consequence, that is correct, but that consequence should be of a social kind and not enforced by the state. Those hate speech laws are already having an affect on comedy (oh you cant say that, god forbid it would OFFEND anyone) and its only a matter of time that power is abused due to political reasons.Hate it.If I were in Government ,one of the first things I would do is get rid of those daft hate speech laws as I believe people get deserved treatment within the court of public opinion ,no need for Government intervention.

I put this in another comment but I'll put it here too. No country has 100% freedom of speech. Every country, including USA, has exceptions and restrictions on FOS, that's why they can sue for slander or libel there. What matters is whether those restrictions are acceptable and justified? In the UK, we can say pretty much anything we want to, regardless of if it's offensive or not up until the point it infringes on another person's human rights. Surely that's a good thing? So I can say I hate you, hate everything about you, wish you were dead etc (I don't, by the way) and that's perfectly within the law. It's rude, yes. It's morally bad, yes, but it's not illegal. However, if I say I'm going to kill you and say it with enough conviction and with enough proof that I intend to follow it through with real action then your right to safety is bring infringed, but the police need good reason to believe I mean it as a direct threat and not just a venting rant style "I'm gonna kill him". The police do not have the time or resources to arrest everyone in the UK just for saying offensive things. That would be ridiculous.

You know what I'VE noticed? Every time this argument comes up in this comment section - "Ooh, people are getting arrested for saying offensive things!" - I see the same name coming up... Count Dankula, Count Dankula, what about Count Dankula? ONE. NAME. Oh, and, every now and then, a vague mention of "those people arrested 'cos of rap lyrics they posted..." with no further details, no supporting evidence of whether or not they were ever formally charged with anything, even if it got as far the courts, never mind an actual guilty verdict and sentence... There are 68 MILLION PEOPLE in the UK right now, and you can cite barely a handful of 'examples' of people arrested for 'saying offensive things.' Your 'freedom of speech' is NOT under attack, and to claim it is is insulting to those in countries that are pretty much a police state. And I mean a REAL police state, like North Korea or some of the African countries run by the likes of Mugabe. You want to know what it REALLY looks like to have your freedom of speech denied? Go to the Amnesty International website, and look at the data for countries where *hundreds of thousands* of people have been arrested, jailed, even TORTURED and 'disappeared' over the years, for 'political' crimes (i.e. they've said or written stuff that craps on their government.) You aint got it so bad over here, buttercups.

If a dictator was to rise up one day and violently remove these ideas from society, they'll still be there, lurking in the shadows, much in the same way Nazi ideology is today. Tim was referencing a youtube comedian known as "count dankula", who did a lot of jokes in a video that was making fun of Nazi ideology, effectively belittling it. I’m sorry Russ, I completely agree on protecting free speech, but what people don’t realise is that we don’t actually have freedom of speech: The 1998 human rights act offers British citizens free speech rights but with several exceptions. The public order act of 1986 declares that it’s a prosecutable offence for a person to say “threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour that causes, or is likely to cause, another person harassment, alarm or distress”. To put that into simpleton language, this means that your rights to what you can and cannot say end where the feelings of others begin. If you offend someone, they can have you locked up for it. If you think I’m exaggerating, then I recommend you look up the case of Chelsea Russel or Markus Meechan. Over 3000 people (and counting) have been arrested for offensive speech online etc..

She is an innocent civilian who could have been killed. It wasn't the only time either. If you love free speech so much why don't you talk about Count Dankula being arrested for making a joke, seeing as you're a comedian I would think you'd be aware that making a joke can now be a punishable offence. How about Chelsea Russell, a teenager from Liverpool who was arrested for posting rap lyrics on Instagram cause it contained the n-word? What about Tyler the Creator being banned from the UK for offensive lyrics? What about the numerous other cases of people being punished by the state for saying mean words? People are well within their rights not to say certain words cause they think it might offend people, just as people are well within their rights to criticise people for saying offensive words, social consequences are perfectly fine. However, it is not the job of the government to decide the consequences, causing offence should not be against the law.
