    I had a dwarf dumbo eared lady named Mrs Honeybutter. She was absolutely Top Rat and could pin anyone else in the mischief. I used to say I would follow her into battle 😂. Not that she was aggressive; she was incredibly sweet with her cage mates and very maternal towards the two babies we introduced. She was queen of the spin trick. Once she was on the outside of the play enclosure where the two new babies were, and she repeatedly did her spin to show us she desperately wanted to play with them! My heart! Sadly, she was in the 5% of dwarf rats who get a mammary tumor. We had it removed, but three months later a tumor grew in her head and burst in her ear. She was far too young to die and I miss her all the time. I mourned her every bit as much as any cat or dog I've had. She was my first heart rat and I'll forever wish i could have given her a more peaceful ending. I made a linocut print to memorialize her.

    I've had rats for well over 10 years and recently got my first dwarf. First of all oh my gosh I love him and it's impossible not to with his tiny little self but what I've noticed is I cannot believe how insanely fast he can move! He is like a little bolt of lightning. I'll be like how in the heck did you just get way down there I didn't even see you move. I am always afraid when they're hanging out with me and I have a blanket on that I'm going to go to get up and his little tiny self will be somewhere in the blanket and I'll fling him across the room. It hasn't happened but I'm always afraid of that and I always check the blanket so well before I move it. Lol

    can you keep them in a dyi cage, like a modified large cupboard? I"ve had problems with my standards destroying the plastic parts of cages (the bottom pan?? sry not a native english speaker) so I had to keep them in a cage that was all metal. but I"d like to give them more space than the available cages if I ever keep rats again.

    We added two teensy dwarf girls to our group this spring, and once they got past the tension (and dramatic screaming) of introductions, the little boogers set about pestering their older counterparts non-stop. I'm still flabbergasted by their size and agility, I guess I should have assumed they'd be miniature ninjas, but they've exceeded my expectations. They have all the personality and mischief of a regular rat, in a shockingly tiny package. After the nearly forty rats we've had since the early 90's, I already suspected that personality was more important than size when it comes to which rat becomes Boss, but it's nice to know that the dwarfs will definitely have a shot at the top spot as their adoptive sisters age out and new girls join the group.

    Hi, I've introduced my male adults to my dwarf and maybe you can help me? I used the carrier method and everything went perfect. But now they are in their permanent cage en the dwarfs keep screaming, although my other rats don't do anything. Will this ever stop or do you have any tips?? 😅

    I switched from males to females in between mischiefs and I'm quite surprised by the massive difference in size between the two genders, let alone with any kind of hormonal mutation. My lil ladies are dinky compared to the gigantic boys I used to have. Completely different owner experience, too!

    Great info as usual, thanks for the content. I have two females dwarf rats and I am quite new to rodent world. I adopted the two little critters on the partial impulse of biological curiosity, and I must say I am quite perplexed by their shy and nervous nature... They do tend to be very wary about new things, foods, objects, movements around them... and they are mostly active at night. I already had two male mice, and compared to these ratties, they were much more bold in temperament, and ready to explore, eat greedily and build their nests with almost any suitable material offered to them. I honestly wonder why such a difference in basic attitude between the two species. They seem not to be enthusiastic about being handled, and I wouldn't like to force them. Neither they are so much food or play motivated, and as a dog trainer, I clearly see the difference in approach during the worktime with them. I suspect they haven't been very well socialized early on, though: they are about 4 to 5 months old now, and they are with me since two weeks. Maybe I am just impatient and a bit too anxious about them, but any further tip about their variety and on how to win their trust is very welcome. :)

    Hopefully they've warmed up to you by now. Not only is it a species issue and very much to do with socialization but of course every rat's personality is different and in general girls tend to be more skittish than boys. Hope it's gone well for you If not there's many different videos and Facebook posts out there to give you great ideas. I have some but I won't write you a novel in case you guys are doing well now.

    that behaviour doesn't seem "normal" for rats, usually they are described as the dogs among rodents, very sociable, like human contact and easy to train (tho characters vary obv. I had sisters from the same litter once, one was a sweetheart and completely tame, her sister was extremely anxious and a biter never got used to human contact, idk why since obv they received the same treatment from their breeder and me, and she never reacted positively to gentle attempts at socialization either) and mice tend to be described as more shy and more of an observation pet. my suspicion is, since dwarfs originated in labs and entered the pet trade fairly recently (at least they weren't around back when I kept rodents) they probably aren't very stable characterwise yet, since they haven't been bred selectively for as long. + a lot of unethical breeders probably breed them too, since they're new, popular and rare

    If I remember correctly, overweight rats are actually the result of selective breeding among researchers because they were studying both obesity & diabetes in rats. tl;dr = Every time my chunky butt climbs up onto my shoulder, I can feel myself sinking further down in my chair! 🤣🤣🤣

  • @jessicaj2990

    @jessicaj2990

    there are strains that are "naturally" overweight, as in they will be morbidly obese even if fed a low calorie diet while normal rats who don't have this mutation stay slim. if all your rats are obese you should change their diet, as this mutation is not available to the public

    @@jessicaj2990Exactly my point! TBH, I've only ever had one Chonk (He's an ivory dumbo and I call him my white elephant) That being said, all my other rats have always had a healthy weight but he's genetically obese. That being said, his brother is relatively skinny which is KIND of surprising considering how much he eats, but he has a really high metabolism, even for rat. Also, I use Oxbow adult rat food, so no worries there.

  • @Rekuzan

    I wouldn't call it rare, but it IS rather uncommon in most strains of domestic rats. But when you DO find one, oh boy do they pack on the weight. His name is (The) Brain and you can almost feel yourself sinking further down into the chair every time he climbs up onto your shoulder! 🤣🤣🤣

    hey, i’ve had rats for a little over a year now, and one of my girls has always made those “pig noises”. i was researching but i’m not sure if i should be worried about it or not because she has had it since i bought her. i noticed she also does it when she gets excited. I also wouldn’t be able to take her to the vet, because it is so expensive where I live. any opinion, thank you, have a blessed day 🫶

    In my experience, it's usually a sign of respiratory problems. You must be able to afford a vet when you have rats, unless you want them to suffer a miserable and painful death from one of many deadly illnesses that they very easily develop. Veterinary care is not optional.
