    I completely agree!!! As someone who is older with a full-time job and responsibilities, the books I choose to read are my safe space! I refuse to let negative tik toks make me feel bad about how I choose to enjoy reading

    Yes!!! When you had a long day, there is nothing better than to be transported in to a different World. I used to feel ashamed of admitting what books I was reading and what I was watching on TV, until a few yrs ago my coworkers and I had an honest conversation, and we all admitted to watching and reading "less ambitious" things, and we decided to F it and do what feels good for us and our mental health. When you start talking about it, it is surprising how many people (from executives to students) need that type of escape. Thank you, Destiny, for always talking about how we can read what we want and how much we want, I think that is really beneficial especially for younger audience.❤❤

    I believe that the reason TikTok is so toxic is because of how young the most users are, KZread users are usually more mature.

    This might sound daft but I honestly think the reason why booktok seems more toxic is because of the age range. Tiktok is primarily used by children/young teens, and lets be real kids just have no chill lmao. I’m not saying there aren’t any children on booktube or vice versa but I think you can clearly feel the imbalance in age and maturity of these two communities.

    I totally see where you’re going with this. A lot do the booktok creators are older teens-adults but many of their followers seem to be younger-older teens with very little understanding of what their comments & criticisms actually do to people. So I can 100% see what you mean by this.

    booktok has become so toxic, like why are we putting down authors and shaming people for liking specific books? people have different tastes??? it was honestly so sad seeing people hate on alex and lightlark, and go as far as to leave 1 star reviews on her book without EVEN READING IT?!! i can't even imagine how she's feeling rn :( like why are we putting so much energy to "cancel" her when we could be addressing and calling out actual problematic authors who have a very concerning history🤔🤔

    Personally my problem with Colleen Hoover is that some of the portrayals of situations, like SA specifically, are romanticized, which trickles down into people being sort of uncritical of those aspects. I’m not saying that those scenes/relationships shouldn’t be in the books, but the way they’re handled I feel like isn’t great, which is mostly why I dislike coho books.

    THANK YOU!!!! it isn’t just “hating” on colleen hoover and her books, it’s that there are serious problems with them! these things (romanticizing abuse and SA) are a common theme in her books, and never change. that’s why she is the problem just as much as her book are bad.

    @@saardcv your response is exactly what i mean when i say her books are harmful. to restate- i did say that she romanticizes abuse and SA constantly. but she as an author and her books are praised so much that people just look past it and don’t see it as a problem. what i’m getting from you is that you don’t see how harmful romanticizing abuse and SA is, especially labeling it as romance. it’s not just an opinion, if you don’t see how disgusting that is there’s something wrong.

  • @oliviawhite633

    @oliviawhite633

    Жыл бұрын

    @@saardcv I think that it’s just important to see and understand the issues lay in the books portrayal of situations which are objectively harmful. In the original version of November 9 there was a pretty explicit SA scene of the two mcs, which coho did remove but never made a real apology for, which to me shows that she doesn’t take things of that nature seriously in certain circumstances. I’m not saying a person can’t like her books, but there’s a lot which should be examined more critically by the reader imo.

  • @svenja8587

    @svenja8587

    Жыл бұрын

    @@fallon9178 now I don’t think colleen hoover meant to romanticise it for the sake of making it seem less harmful. I personally think she did a great job portraying the pov of a victim of SA and I assume she wanted to show the reader how manipulated the victims are and reading lily’s pov we see this romanticised version and fall for it. I feel like it’s a great way to draw a readers attention to the problem though I think some think could’ve been done better and I generally don’t lover her writing style. Again this is simply my opinion and I tolerate yours but I think just labelling it bad without further analysing the wished effect on the reader is stupid.

    This is why I am VERY selective in regard to social media. I have Pinterest, Goodreads (I guess this counts...???), and KZread. I only comment on BookTube videos, because I feel welcomed and included. I really appreciate you talking about this topic. The fact that people are made to feel shame for a hobby that they love is disgusting. For some people, that makes people afraid to continue their hobbies and that's what is so sad to me. They end up losing parts of themselves. People preach about being yourself, but when you try, you are shot down if you don't align with them. Social Media has made society as a whole toxic.

    I’m not coho fan personally, I’ve read ugly love and thought it was fine.I’m in interested in reading verity and heartbones in the future. But, I don’t think anyone should try to say someone isn’t a reader because they don’t read the most literary, and like serious books. Just because you only read “easy reads” doesn’t dismiss the fact that you’re reading. I love easy, fun books.I only mostly read romance but that doesn’t mean anything. People can be so elitist about books, and think they’re better because of the type of books they read!

  • @jessicatwomey4024

    Generally on tik tok there is a wide age range of about 14-early 20s. So when you think about it of course I would read different types of books and have different opinions on a book at 18 compared to a 14 year old because of my maturity level. When I was 14 I would read cute YA rom coms or YA fantasy’s now I tend to read more dark steamy romances. Which there’s nothing wrong about but when people on booktok deem a book as childish or to light and fluffy, yeah it might be for them but the younger audience on booktok might absolutely love that book because it’s more of their maturity level. But that doesn’t give people the right to make someone feel bad about liking or disliking a book or force an opinion. We are all different we all have different opinions and that’s perfectly fine. People need to just respect peoples opinions. I think people need to realise that the people on Tik tok and social media are real people. It unsettles me how much disrespect and inconsideration people have for others these days.

If you don’t like to read coho books then that’s fine but don’t bash someone for not having the same interest as you . Like y’all are upset that people are finding love in reading rather then wanting to spend their time on a screen for hours ? I would also think that while people are bashing coho for being “overrated” or “overhyped” I’m just glad mrs coho is in her bag ! • @LillyBilly121

    -It Ends With Us: I loved this book so much. I think one of the reasons it is SO popular and SO hyped is simply because of the subject matter it deals with, mixed with her writing style. I think so many women and girls can relate to Lily and it feels as though Colleen has described exactly what it is like to be in an abusive relationship. I think the people who are like really supporting this book are maybe ones who have gone through it and are feeling that emotional feeling like “people finally know my story” without them having to say “I’ve been through this too” personally, that’s why I loved it so much! -Ugly Love: I initially read this and it was a page turner and I even cried during certain parts. However looking back I realized that there was literally no character development on Tate and I wondered how either of them could even be falling in love because it seemed like their whole time spent together was so superficial. I thought Miles was an ass for how he treated her but in the end I even liked him more than her because we had more character development on him. Tate is literally one dimensional and her whole personality is just getting Miles to love her back. Spoiler maybe: The only time I felt like I got to know Tate a little more was when she showed up in November 9 and we got to see how caring she is.

    I think that stuff circulates faster on TikTok. In ugly love there is one quote( you probably know the one) that went around TikTok. I think without reading a coho book and only seeing ugly love (or one other book by her) being so popular, it’s a negative experience already for a potential reader. The only thing I’ve ever seen on Booktok about coho, is just what you said. It’s more immature writing. I personally love it. I read Sarah dessen books growing up. I prefer KZread! I feel like I find more book recs that I might normally not read or hear about ❤️❤️

It felt like a messy wattpad story with too many time jumps and I really disliked the letters to Ellen as a way to tell Lily and Atlas’s story. I agree that it’s wayyy overhyped. If you dnf’d it i’d try to go back and read what’s left bc it does end up being a good ending

It was so surprising how these books could be so 'hyped and liked'. I can only assume they were all paid publicities. Nowadays even books covers have written 'sensation on tiktok'. Thanks for the heads up lol.

    I fully agree with you it comes to Ugly Love. I really wanted to love it but I had problems with the fact Miles haven't been in a relationship in years so what had made Tate sooo special. They never went on dates and we barely know their personalities. Ended up giving it a 3 star. Just because I didn't like the book didn't mean I don't like the author. Booktube and booksta are definitely superior book socials. I think it all comes down age and maturity. Quite a lot of the TikTok audience is such a younger demographic. I agree with almost all your book thoughts. There was only one I disagree on and it sally rooney, I really enjoy her writing. But that’s okay, we’re adults who can have different taste. As a 19 year old I saw all the hype around The summer I turned pretty series I decided I should try it, so I got it on audible. And let me just say, that’s one of my lowest rated books of the year, Belly was so immature and come on… Belly really. And I felt like the writing itself was immature, so I could definitely see 14-16 year olds enjoying it. So I was like idk maybe they get better but then I started reading some reviews and was like yeah ok nope not happening .

    I feel so bad when people are mean to people who read colleen hoover. Like fr it's not that serious. Let people read what they want. Just because you read a different author doesn't make you superior. Just like you wouldn't be mean to someone for liking country music over rap, etc. We as the book community need to share the love we have for books, we need to get together and love each other over our mutual love for books.

    The Colleen hate came on STRONG AND FAST I was shocked like just read something else 🤷‍♀️ Like I can understand some of the criticism as there's been many books of hers I haven't enjoyed but there's been a few that I've loved and I'm excited for It Starts With US! I will say as a 28 year old I've found a lot more books I love from KZread creators because some of the ya books on tik tok are just written a little too young for me. But I love using both in tandem for recommendations.

    I said once that I didn't like shatter me and that I won't pick up the rest of the series. I got a 100 comments of people telling me I am wrong. That's what's wrong with booktok. I'm not wrong if I didn't like it. It's like they are this big cult and came on me, begging me to read more cuz "it was worth it". I wanted to rip that book into shreds, so no this isn't a series I want to continue. I don't like it, you like it, we leave it at that. That's booktube. Booktok tho? Oh they are gonna shred u apart. And don't even get me started on the fighting if there is a love triangle in a certain book...For example, I am a team Jeremiah girl. Sure she ended up with Conrad, whatever, I still like my ship more (and keep hating on the third book) that was MY experience with those books. This was the character that I enjoyed so much and he became a comfort to me. I once saw a video that went like "you're a -1000 if you are team jeremiah" people seriously putting people down and their LOOKS for liking a character and a ship that isn't endgame than the one that is endgame? And their defense mechanism is what? "Oh it's a joke" no honey. You meant it. You wouldn't have posted it if you didn't mean it. And now the final gambit will come out soon and they are just attacking eachother like wolves (not all but like most). It's a toxic community and I prefer booktube much much more. It's a safe space.
