Let’s take a trip to the Western and Atlantic Railroad in 1863!
A short while ago, I was able to bust the home of my friend Thom Radice and got to run trains, including my General modeled to appear as she was in 1863. Here we run the Western and Atlantic railroad from Atlanta to Chattanooga retracing the steps of that famous event..
in war torn south, the W&A provided a lifeline to the Southern troops.
Let’s take a ride on this great layout following a few trains!!

That low angle shot of the train crossing the river at 14 minute mark is absolutely breath taking.

Thanks! Pretty spectacular layout overall, but that is a signature scene! Thanks for watching.
You know, there aren't many layouts of 1860's through 1890's railroading. I know of a few, but this one takes the cake. Thanks for sharing!

@@gageblymyer you can see more on Thom Radice channel. It’s his layout and you are right, it’s stupendous!!
Your General is beautifully modeled, down to the waist walking boards, the three domes, the covered bell stack, the flickering carbide headlight and the livery paint and lettering. We've all gotten so used to the restoration in the Kennesaw museum that was restored to an 1870s/80s American loco configuration. I live near the W&A line, have ridden elements of it on the Summerville Steam Specials, so Thom's layout must have been a great place to run. He has really captured the rolling hills and creek crossings as perfectly as anyone I've seen Very nice smooth drivetrain refitted into that Mantua General diecast model. Tyco Generals were a frustrating model to operate realistically. I have one in pieces I plan to rework as the William Mason, but it will be getting new motor and linkage.

Thanks for the kind words. But this is/was a Bachmann “new tooling” 4-4-0 that did get all the upgrades you mentioned. Check out Thom’s channel around May ‘21 for the full explanation of the work I did on this. Took about 4 months. Thom’s layout was a dream to run on. We had a good time and got a lot done. Thanks again.. appreciate your comments.
I am totally floored by the layout especially the backdrop. Best video of a layout I have seen, and best layout.

Tremendous layout! Using the entire room to show the many stops along the way: the various locomotives and rolling stock: the scenery; the main station in Atlanta......Hats off to you artisans! I wish I lived close to request a personal visit! Well done!

Fabulous representation of the Western & Atlantic line between Atlanta & Chattanooga! Very realistic representations of the various notable locations along the line! Also, very well-done locos and cars, even down to the accurate link & pin couplers!!

This one was 1863, so more than 100 years before BNSF…. But this is fun to run. Very different era.
Really enjoyed the video. Great era to model. Again, loved the rail fanning of this magnificent layout.

Excellent layout. thank you.
A very nice video and layout. I have plans to expand my own HO scale layout, though I don't believe it will be quite as large as this, and the era and location I want to model is about 80-90 years after and approximately 750 miles north of what's seen here.

Great! This was a very well done layout set in the CW era. It was a lot of fun to visit and operate. It’s a small portion of my fun with modeling. Thanks for watching! Good luck with the expansion!
Just a suggestion- when making a video for posting to youtube, asking visitors to cut down on talking and incidental background music during filming would help, since this is a layout not just of sight and sound but of mind. There's the signpost up ahead-- your next stop . . . the Western & Atlantic 1863 Zone! Noise free!

The entire layout was L&P. The pocket on the rear of the loco is by Precision Scale. Also, Prescott Hobbies has a line of L&P couplers designed to fit into the Kadee #5 pockets. Thanks for watching. Unfortunately I won’t be back any time soon, I’m in Colorado and he’s in the northeast. But search Thom Radice for his channel too. Thanks for watching!!

Did you build it to a 5 foot Track Gauge? 5 ft was a common gauge in most of the Southern ( Confederate) States. Sherman and Sheridan Ripped up CSA Roads, and replaced them with Standard Gauge ( 4ft.8.5in.) Tracks, to run US supplies in without time wasting Transhipment.
@goaliegeorge

This layout was built using standard HO track. So, unfortunately while we knew about the difference in gauges, it would not be practical. But the layout is not mine, so I cannot take any of the credit. Thanks for watching!
You really have a stunning railroad man! Hey... what shells do you use to replace the general boiler and cab?
@goaliegeorge
2 жыл бұрын
It’s not my railroad, it belongs to Thom Radice. I’d only aspire to have a layout as great as this. Only thing that was mine was The General. Now, I believe he uses the stock boiler and cab, just modifies it as needed to get the loco he is chasing. There are some of the parts to change the mantua generals on shapeways. I hope this helps. Thanks.

@@MarkInLA both..? Precision scale has some pockets and there are some other companies that make some drop-in pockets for Kadee boxes. I’ve used some of the San Juan Model Co On2 coupler plastic pockets also, then can either make the links or buy them. If you go to Thoms YT channel, he has posted a lot of our Civil War Modelers Zoom meets where things like that are discussed in further detail.
