▬▬▬▬ GAME INFO ▬▬▬▬
** This is a full let's play Psychonauts video series. **
Psychonauts is a platform video game developed by Double Fine Productions, headed by Tim Schafer. The game was initially published by Majesco Entertainment in 2005 and 2006 for Microsoft Windows, Xbox and PlayStation 2; Budcat Creations helped in the PlayStation 2 port. In 2011, Double Fine acquired the rights for the title, allowing the company to republish the title with updates for modern gaming systems and creating OS X and Linux ports.
Psychonauts follows the player-character Raz (voiced by Richard Horvitz) a young boy gifted with psychic abilities who runs away from the circus to try to sneak into a summer camp for those with similar powers to become a "Psychonaut", a spy with psychic abilities. He finds that there is a sinister plot occurring at the camp that only he can stop. The game is centered on exploring the strange and imaginative minds of various characters that Raz enters as a Psychonaut-in-training/"Psycadet" to help them overcome their fears or memories of their past, so as to gain their help and progress in the game. Raz gains use of several psychic abilities during the game that are used for both attacking foes and solving puzzles.
Psychonauts was based on an abandoned concept that Schafer had during the development of Full Throttle, which he expanded out into a full game through Double Fine. The game was initially backed by Microsoft's Ed Fries as a premiere title for the original Xbox console, but following Fries' departure in 2004, Microsoft dropped the publishing rights. Double Fine was able to secure Majesco as a publisher a few months later allowing them to complete the game after four and a half years of development.
Despite strong critical praise, Psychonauts did not sell well with only about 100,000 retail units sold at the time of release, leading to severe financial loss for Majesco and their departure from the video game market; the title was considered a commercial failure. Psychonauts since has earned a number of industry awards and gained a cult following. Following the acquisition of the game, Double Fine's republishing capabilities and support for modern platforms has allowed them to offer the game through digital distribution, and the company has reported that their own sales of the game have far exceeded what was initially sold on its original release, with cumulative sales of nearly 1.7 million as of December 2015. A sequel, Psychonauts 2, was announced at The Game Awards in December 2015.
Psychonauts -- A Psychic Odyssey Through the Minds of Misfits, Monsters, and Madmen.
Psychonauts is a classic action/adventure platformer from acclaimed developers Double Fine Productions follows the story of a young psychic named Razputin. In his quest to join the Psychonauts--an elite group of international psychic secret agents--he breaks into their secret training facility: Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp. But this is no average psychic summer camp! A mysterious villain has kidnapped Raz’s fellow campers and stolen their brains. Now he must use his psychic powers of Telekinesis, Levitation, and most of all his ability to project himself into the minds of others--to find the loose noodles and keep them from falling into the wrong hands. Fight mental demons! Uncover hidden memories! Sort emotional baggage! Explore the fantastic realm of the inner mind! Join the Psychonauts!
Other than Psychonauts 2, Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin was also announced the PlayStation Experience 2015, as a PlayStation VR game coming to PS4 in 2016. It tells the story of what happens immediately after the end of Psychonauts.
Psychonauts 2 is slated for release in 2018. If you'd like to support its development, the crowdfunding campaign on is available until January 2016 here: www.fig.co/campaigns/psychona....
This let's play video footage of Psychonauts is recorded on the PC version in 1080p / 60fps. Unfortunately, this is a PC port of the XBox version and Double Fine has said that the original assets are no longer available for them to re-do high quality cutscenes of. The general gameplay scenes in Psychonauts still have passable graphics, while pre-rendered scenes are dated.

I dont know if you read comments on 4 year old videos, but i binged this entire series in 2 days. Came for psychonauts, stayed for your personality. Your voice is nice too btw. i subbed
Damn, even in the current year, you still can tell the passion put into this game. Loved the series!
Great game. Great series. Great Commentary.
Ahh thank you so much for playing this game! I played it for the first time maybe 4-5 years ago but never finished it, so I recently got it again but that meat circus part was SUPER annoying and I knew it was close to end so I figured I'd just look up how it ended and watch it and I really enjoyed watching you play it!! You did a great job!
one of the best games ive played. Thanks for the walk through, helped me out quite a bit.
Oh man this was good! I haven't binge something like this for so long now! Looking forward to the new one!!
Just finished your playthrough and I gotta say, you showcased this game REALLY well, and showed us a lot of things that many playthroughs don't!! Your game was definitely bugged in some places (most notably, the flagpole in Basic Braining) but you didn't let that deter you or impact the quality of your gameplay!! I don't usually watch playthroughs with commentary but I'm glad I dropped in for this one!! Thanks for playing!!

+tomboy_ I'm glad you enjoyed this! It's funny you say that because I first found out about Psychonauts from KZread videos too!
I just finished my own first playthrough of Psychonauts and it's easy to say, that this will become one of my favourite games of all time, cause i'm really in love with all those bizarre and strange design choices, which you simply can not find in other games. Tomb Raider for example: Thanks to our little talk on Twitter, i started playing it some days ago and really enjoyed it so far from a gameplay standpoint, but when it comes to design and concepts, there is like nothing that stands out, nothing that makes it special or unique like Psychonauts. (still kinda hyped now about that early Rise of the Tomb Raider PC release :D!) Also, Raz has rekindled my forgotten love and passion for those 3D-Jump-"n"-Run-Action-Adventures that i grew up with, like Gex, Spyro, Crash and all the other great titles from the legendary and wonderful PSOne-childhood. So, next one on my retrolist will finally be Beyond Good & Evil, also for the first time. Really looking forward to this one :3 (after Yakuza 5 and Rise) And last but not least, big thanks to you for this super great and enjoyable LP! It helped me a lot getting through that boredom, while i was lying sick in bed a couple days ago. As the doctors say: "Laughter is the best medicine", and man, that was a really funny trip :)

+Ferusilma I'm glad I was able to help you pass some time! And yeah, I find that in general the AAA titles like Tomb Raider play it safe with the cranked up graphics and grand epic storylines, and the more indie titles are where we get things where every single bit of design is just "leaking" love from the developers. I can see that Psychonauts' feel is close to those PS1 games too. I actually wasn't around for gaming around that time so I'm very glad Psychonauts being on PC allows me to get a little closer to some of these games!
@ferusilma
8 жыл бұрын
+Materwelonz Yeah, AAA titles like Tomb Raider have to play it safe, cause they simply cost millions and need to appeal to thousands of individual gamers. But damn, that writing in Tomb Raider is so fucking stupid. When Alex died, I was just like "Seriously? All that for a fucking wrench?". When someone in The Last of Us died, I was depressed as hell and in tears, cause I cared so much about the characters, even if I've met them just minutes ago. But to be fair and as I said before, the gameplay and animation in Tomb Raider is pretty well done (except some minor bugs and glitches) and for some reason I'm in love with that cranked up graphic. The aestehtics in this game are just fucking beautiful. So, you can find a lot of "leaking love" in those titles too. Like the small details on the relics or clothing for example. Things you can't find in Undertale!
@ferusilma
8 жыл бұрын
+Materwelonz But then again, "play it safe" is actually the reason why I had lost my passion for video games many years ago, when there was no indie market with such huge variety around like nowadays. Just shooters and 3rd person stuff. Only the first big titles like Braid and World of Goo brought me back into gaming again and that's why I'm such a sucker for all these indies today. I mean, Mark of the Ninja is still the best stealth game since 2012. I literally made coffee and sat down with pen & paper for Her Story, and I don't even drink coffee. I felt like Sherlock Holmes in Gone Home (and was scared like shit). The whole idea behind Portal came from some indie devs and Supergiant Games is my new Valve, cause Bastion and Transistor are so damn perfect in many regards! The point is: I'm really enjoying Tomb Raider right now but it makes me super sad, that the whole character development of Lara Croft is like innocent to mass murder in 100 seconds, you know? Where is the struggle and the pain? I just want the feels man, like with Undertale or To The Moon or that fucking ending of Valiant Hearts... PS: Cause you said, that you wasn't around for gaming that time and there is a big Q&A thingy coming up: So, when did you actually start playing games? And why?
Great playthrough; especially Meat Circus, that was a blast! I hope you end up playing Psychonauts 2 when it finally releases.

Just noticed a couple of Star Trek actors in the credits, Dwight Shultz, (Barclay in TNG) and Armin Shimerman, (Quark in DS9). Have you played Beyond Good an Evil? I think you might like it.
I’ve been trying to do the climbing net part and every time I jump across I fall and have to restart rip
and I hope you love the psychonatuts 2
bunnies are useless to butchers, as even the fatest of bunnies are skinnier than a pig, it could be priced higher, but that would make the meat less valuable as it has to be packaged with more for a meal, when a pig or cow could fit several family sized packings, the father obviously didn't want his son liking something he'd need to kill but it's not needed as the son didn't fallow in his father's footsteps, i haven't completed the game as fuck the raz's dad level, but wasn't he a soldier, so that's kind of like a butcher except its a different meat and the only thing eating it is rats
Damn I cant wait for Psychonauts 2!
Excellent commentary, very interesting and entertaining game, what more could you ask for? I played a few PS2 era platformers when they were first released, and yeah this never popped up on my radar, which is too bad because it looks like a lot of fun. Certainly much better than some of the clunkers that somehow made it into my collection. One thing I'd like to call out on the LP is the editing; these platformers can get repetitive at times (especially if you die a lot) but you did a good job of cutting out the fat while leaving the meat and keeping the story going. I know that aspect of creating a video takes time and skill which is often underappreciated, but there are a few of us viewers who notice. I watched your Horizon Zero Dawn LP earlier, pretty sure that didn't need much editing, or maybe you hid the cuts better. A different type of game and Twitch savvy developers on that one I guess.
I am in Final Boss stage! After finishing this, I will jump out to Psychonauts 2. P.S. Subscribing you, Materwelonz🤞😉❤

Psychonauts 2. I don't know how to feel about it. Tim Schafer used to be THE name for creative games. However, when your best game in a decade was a remake of an old point-and-click adventure, maybe you've lost your touch. Then add on the controversies you mentioned. My opinion, in terms of Mr. Schafer's career: He's already been sentenced, had his meal, read his rites, put before town square, the guillotine blade is raised, and his head is in the stocks. This is his last chance to make any sort of statement and if he wants to make sure he's not dead in the industry, it has to be ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL.

AHHHHHHHHHHH
Where'd Raz get the idea that his dad hated psychics?
@mrred773
6 жыл бұрын
I think for the most part, Raz assumes it. Raz seems to hate acrobatics even if he's very skilled at it, and being forced to do something you don't like breeds a lot of contempt and resentment, which sort of manifested as his idea that his father hates him for being psychic - And it's true that his dad tried to put him on a certain path, rather than letting him choose his own, but that was more to do with teaching him how to take care of himself in different ways. I think it'd be easy for him to thing in the way that he does though, for as inteligent and wise as he is, he's still just a kid with a more limited idea of the world than almost anyone else he's been in the head of. It's probably important to note as well that Raz isn't irredeemably glued to the idea of his dad hating him, he just needed to be shown that his father truly loved him to have the lie dispelled, and I think their representation of that is really realistic and refreshing.
Sometimes double-jump just doesn't work. The hit-boxes in this game are apparently entirely random. I really want to finish this game today. But I might just watch your ending, instead of trying to achieve my own. This would be my first rage-quit at this rate.
