Another way to make this game competitive would be following the rules of "The Nice Round" from Richard Osman's House of Games. The guesser awards a point to whoever's clue they felt helped them most.

Over time even that became competitive and people would just give points to anyone who wasn't likely to win.

It’d be a fun addition with a saboteur role - if they get outed, they lose points, if you out the wrong person you lose points, they get points if the guesser fails… one possible wrinkle to encourage actual good clues.

No that would not work as I imagined - there’d have to be some penalty for being voted out if you were crew; hmm… needs more workshopping.

Maybe there’s just one or two saboteurs each turn. They score if it isn’t guessed encouraging the crew to give good clues. The sabs get a point (or two) for a failure. Tweak the balance.

As a fan who wasn't until Blood on the Clocktower was a thing, I recently decided I'm going to series watch from the beginning. It's fun to see all the bits and bobs of legend develop. Today's example: They all laughed at Tom's buzzer, but darned if it isn't one they use to this day

'Bus Fare' was brilliant! That's the idea of the game, think outside the box but still lead the guesser to the right answer. Thanks for sharing this 'how to play' over Zoom. I'm adding this to my game group!

My first thought was "taxi" for exactly the same reason. I don't think it would have helped, though.

Thanks to NXT, now when I tune in for a video here, I picture William Regal yelling "BOARDGAMES!!" thanks to NXT Wargames hype.

And even if it did.... If synonyms are considered the same for clues, then I feel like they should be considered the same for answers too. Like when Blair said carnival and it was fair? I just think that should've counted.

Wasn't sure if I'd get into this channel as much seeing as the most interesting board game I've ever owned is star was chess but between these, the history videos and actually good im loving it!

I was given a Just One board game recently and I had no idea how to play this game with my friends on a virtual set-up, good thing I stumbled in this video. Thank you!

I definitely think that if you are eliminating answers that are synonyms then Blair should have got points for Carnival (a synonym of fair) just seems more fair to me

I love games that show just how differently people's minds can work (which I'm aware is ironic given the whole 'two of the same things cancel out' rule that comes up a lot). But when the clue was 'bus' I didn't for a second think of 'bus fare', I thought it was about the Rosa Parks justice movement.

@@Shavinderyt Yeah, I think since "Fair" and Fare" are hononyms and the guesser only has to say the word out loud rather than write it down, using different meanings of the same sounding word is actually a good strategy. Great lateral thinking by Mr. Davis!

Since playing along from the guesser’s perspective was hard, I decided to play along with this one by coming up with clues as well for the first few within the allotted time. I got no duplicates. I guess I’ll always be curious whether “blankets” would have helped Isaac, “maiden” would have helped Blair, or “hag” would have helped Oli at all xD

Love these videos, it's one thing being told a game is fun but it's great to see it in action. Just played Codenames with some friends thanks to your videos and everyone had a great time ♥️

The rule about synonyms was kinda inconsistent. Change and metamorphosis are synonyms enough to cancel, but fair and carnival aren't enough for Blair to be correct? And Just and Fair aren't synonym enough for Adam's clue to be invalid?

Oli was thrown a softball with pit and still whiffed it. They must not have built a park in a Tony Hawk game, because they would know punji pit is if they did. Also the Vietnam War had something to do with them too or whatever.

I had trouble concentrating after the referenced disrespect of season 4. There are so many great episodes in that season! Hush, The Restless, Fear Itself, Superstar... How can one NOT like season 4?

@@niaj7400 No, it is not a synonym. The two words mean different things. You could not use the word ‘metamorphosis’ to describe, for example, the change of temperature of water when boiled in a kettle, the change of government after an election, or the change of score in a football match after one team scores a goal. These are examples of change, but not of metamorphosis. If I was to define the word ‘sock’, I would most likely use the word ‘foot’ in my definition, but sock is not a synonym of foot.

I don't think the scoring here works. Guessing is way harder then writing a different word from everyone else so the correct answer should net you 2 points or maybe even 3.

In the many times I’ve played this game with a wide variety of people, we’ve never done the synonym rule. Is it really there in the instructions?

i think two words with the same meaning are considered different tho... i've read the rules and it never mentioned completely different words with the same meaning to be considered identical. :o

Why « funnel »? I don’t get what it has to do with « fair »? Granted, l,m not a native speaker.

I'm just saying if change and metamorphosis are synonyms I'm gonna say growth should have been one too. But we know from Dobbins and bobbins that Adam likes to have that advantage.

Just leads to Fair Bus leads to Fare Cotton Candy and Funnel lead to Fayre They're all different words.
