Let's Play Drova - A 2D Gothic-inspired Action-RPG

Ойындар

This video is a playthrough of the "Drova Teaser" by Just2D, a 2D-Gothic-like action-RPG currently in development with a planned release date of March 2023. This teaser is a short, self-contained scenario meant to show off gameplay systems and what they're working on, but is obviously a work-in-progress and may not be representative of the final product. I'm playing this teaser of my own interest because it looked intriguing and the promise of being inspired by Gothic is something that appeals to me as a longtime Gothic fan.

For me key aspects of Gothic-like experience are: a) From zero to hero, which includes being treated like trash by others in the beginning, which makes you nice NPCs appreciate a whole lot more, which leads to developing a closer connection with them, which raises the stakes and immersion... and also being destroyed by stronger beasts, giving me the reason to get much stronger and then the satisfaction when I can face those previously unbeatable beasts b) Being part of the comunity, on same level with other NPCs with similar strugles (Gothic 1 - paying or not paying for protection, then facing consequences by a digger who also wants to become a Shaddow, helping Dusty, who is even more pathetic than you in the beginning, so you are proud you can at least help him and show him the way to the Swamp camp, which was previously shown to you by a novice, who seemed so strong and cool, now you are like that novice for Dusty,...) --> and I missed these 2 key elements, however it is just a teaser, sooo I understand there were not so many opportunities to show these qualities, however they should not be absent completely.

Apparently so. I didn't pick up on that when I read the first line, which made the follow-up comment confusing and seemingly contradictory. That's where some text narration in the dialogue would've helped, like for example, if it said something along the lines of "Olaf shakes his head and mumbles something under his breath" or "Olaf crosses his arms and then gives you a stern look," or "Olaf chuckles to himself and rolls his eyes at you." That would help to convey the sarcasm better while also adding some extra descriptive narration to bring the conversation to life some more.

This looks like another Steam teaser game fallen into development hell. It's been happening a lot lately with Indie games which are in the early access or teaser state in Steam. They previously had a release date slated for May 2023. Now they've changed it to TBD and there's been no news updates for over 3 months now. I've seen several Steam early access or teaser games remaining in that state for 5 years. This happens especially with Indies

These games are so awesome! The graphics might throw some people off, but think about it in a different way.. let's say you're in prison, and for good behaviour, you are allowed to play 2 hours of this game, a few times a week. This game would look great in that environment and you wouldn't bitch about graphics in a setting like that.. you would immerse yourself in that world, just as we did when growing up with games like Nox and Diablo 1. I always thought that old generation computers should have been sent to prisons, packed with awesome games, as an incentive for good behaviour and why not even with multi-player games that would reinforce the bond between inmates and raise the feeling of camaraderie. Imagine how many millions of computers are gathering dust somewhere, when they could have been sent to juvenile centers, centers for old people and foster homes or prisons, where people don't know or even care about Ambient Occlusion..

Alright, so after seeing this I must say it feels doesn't really feel like Gothic at all. The combat is cool and all, but the world just looks and feels... kinda bland. Nothing I think I'll be able to remember next week. Generally, that's the problems with clones: They try recreating the feeling of something that innovated the genre. But you just can't do that by copying it. That said, there are games similar to Gothic in feel that I enjoy, e.g. the first Witcher game which was also inspired, but at the same felt different and unique. But this one doesn't seem to copy the most important aspects I feel. Those would be an interesting world with interesting characters that you can roam in freely, but unlike other games the main story would still be the focus and the sidequests would revolve around it. Not like in so many rpg games where there's 10,000 side quests so you completely forget about the main story which makes the entire game feel stale. The latter can't be shown here of course, I just mention it for completion's sake. The main focus is still interesting world and interesting characters in a somewhat small and intimate setting so you have room to remember the most important ones.

I think in a situation like this, it's important to temper one's expectations on the notion that "beggars can't be choosers." Of course we'd all like to see a true spiritual successor to Gothic, but the odds are unlikely for that to ever happen, given that Gothic 1+2 were essentially lightning in a bottle. Even PB have been unable to recapture the magic of the first two games, and they've been trying (largely in vain) for almost 20 years. And unlike some other playable teasers that have come out recently, this one isn't claiming to BE Gothic -- it's merely "inspired by" Gothic, and is being done in a completely different style, so I'd say it's unfair to expect (or demand) that everything be fundamentally identical to Gothic. Differences, in this case, are going to be inescapable given what appears to be a small-scale indie developer and the inherent limitations of the chosen style, since I would imagine some things are much harder to translate or pull off in a 2D medium with a low production budget. The characters, for example, are probably never going to be able to match those of the original games since Drova doesn't have voice actors to bring those characters to life or lend them as much of a unique on-screen personality. Thus, I would say it's more realistic to accept a game such as this as being "Gothic Lite" instead of "Gothic-like," in the sense that it's a more simplified take on the subject matter that merely takes elements from it, while not being a true attempt to recreate the original in every way. We also have to keep in mind the limitations of the teaser itself, being a small self-contained scenario where many key attributes that would normally contribute to a Gothic feeling are probably difficult-to-impossible to demonstrate. Sticking with the characters, it took time in Gothic to build any sort of familiarity or rapport with them; it wasn't until over halfway through Gothic 1 that characters like Milten, Diego, Gorn, and Lester really started to shine due to your repeated encounters with them and your one-on-one adventures as part of the Focus Stone quests. Other characters never got fleshed-out at all with any kind of serious player interaction or notable personality traits until the sequel. At first glance, many characters in Gothic probably don't seem all that interesting by themselves; it's not until you have serious (and recurring) interactions with them that they start to take shape. Gorn, for example, was Just A Guy, a random named mercenary of basically no interest whatsoever, who had a couple lines of dialogue and never really stood out from the other mercenaries (apart from his unique name) until it came time to adventure in the old Monastery with him, and then later retake the Free Mine with him. In the Drova teaser, we're only just being introduced to characters for the first time and in such a short scenario simply don't have much time to get to know them or develop that kind of camaraderie or familiarity. Maybe Faol, for instance, could become a recurring character and become something like Diego in Gothic, but we only had a few minutes of interaction with him. Given that he was involved in two different quests (the Rippers, and the Mutant) it would've been nice to see his character developed a little more than it was, but again, it's a simplistic teaser that seems primarily intended to serve as an alpha demonstration of how the general game might look/feel, and thus probably isn't representative of the bigger picture that the developer is trying to paint when given a bigger canvas with more colors to use. It's clearly obvious that this isn't how the full game is intended to start, either, since they already start you at level 7 as a novice of the order when it's supposed to follow a Gothic-style progression system of starting with rags and joining a faction before the game really gets going. You may think the world looks bland, but I found the mechanical interaction with it plenty satisfying and engaging. I played it over a week-and-a-half-ago and can still vividly remember practically every single area of it, so clearly it was memorable to me. Personally, I found elements that they were teasing decently intriguing, like the core concept of Ether as somehow being part of all life and yet also being incredibly toxic, which might possibly take on an Elex sort of role by playing into the backstory of this world in some significant way; there's the faction conflict between the Family and the Order which presumably have differing ideologies that will fuel some part of the main quest and the player's involvement in it; and there's the whole concept of the Red Tower (which is seemingly the basis of the Order's religion) and the shadowy figures at the end trying to banish their god while standing in front of a Red Tower. That stuff is all interesting to me, though it's not fully depicted in this teaser -- it's merely teased. You're also talking about being able to freely roam the world and complete side quests, but where the main quest is ultimately the main focus. Well that's absolutely part of the teaser; you can explore any area you want in any order, with complete freedom from the very start of the teaser. You can go right to the final boss and "beat" the teaser while doing absolutely nothing else if you know where to go and can beat him. Practically all of the side quests are done in service of the main quest-line (finding Alban) and there's a decent amount of overlap in terms of how characters are tangentially involved in other quests and interactions. By your own criteria, I'd say Drova meets the most important aspects of a Gothic game; you just don't find the characters or world that interesting, which again, I suspect may be a limitation of the teaser format and not representative of what could be done with the full game, or may just be your own personal impression as I don't necessarily share those feelings. I wasn't terribly invested in the world or characters, but I wasn't put off by them in any sort of negative way like you apparently were. Obviously there are missing elements of what one might consider part of the "True Gothic Experience" and some things that the developer is claiming to be striving for don't come across very strongly in the teaser, but to me enough of the core experience was there (attempts at immersive tutorials and world-building; complete lack of hand-holding with regard to things like quests, exploration, and combat; non-linear freedom to explore the world and complete quests in whatever order, even sequence-breaking events; challenging difficulty progression that starts out tough and gets easier as you become familiar with the combat and improve your character; densely-structured world design that is both memorable and inherently navigable on your own; rewarding exploration; satisfying combat; dungeons and environmental puzzles; basically the exact same leveling and progression system; promises of things like factions; and so on) that I'm looking forward to what can be done with a full development cycle, as I can see some good potential in it. I'm not going to sit here and poo-poo the developer's work because it doesn't live up to the legacy of Gothic or isn't doing certain things as well as Gothic; after all, it's not like they're straight-up remaking Gothic and completely butchering it. I'm holding this game to a much lower standard than the Gothic Remake, in other words, and will be pleasantly content with it having even just SOME of the Gothic vibe and thus enjoying it as a "Gothic Lite" experience. As long as they're putting forth a sincere effort and are making a fun and enjoyable game, that's all that really matters to me, and so far this teaser shows promise to me. Let's not rush to pass judgment on how "like or unlike" it is to Gothic just yet when at most we've only just read the teaser on the back of the box, so to speak, or using another metaphor, have only read a random chapter that's been pulled out of a full book. Even if it's not there yet, we should take this as an opportunity to provide positive feedback that can help shape the development into something we as Gothic fans might enjoy, as opposed to being overly down on it not living up to astronomically high expectations so early in development.

Where is this game "Gothic-like"? It has literal nothing to do with the iconic atmosphere. No sillly character lines. No voice actors?! Too much interface! Loading screens everywhere! Skill points over the interface is not Gothic. Flashy anime style fighting elements, i mean wtf?! The screen tells you where you are, that's unnessesary if you believe a word about, how the game is not helping to navigate! And it's in 2D, where Gothic is known to be one if not THE first innovative 3D openworld rpg on the market... And if you tell me this is just a teaser, then look at the Gothic playable teaser... I respect the idea and the effort put into this, but if devs don't understand the core elements of a game they get inspired by, they shouldn't hype their game in that way, that's disappointing... And i don't see many criticising comments like mine, that's even more disappointing knowing the gothic community. :'D

Even if it's not there yet, we should take this as an opportunity to provide positive feedback that can help shape the development into something we as Gothic fans might enjoy, as opposed to being overly down on it not living up to astronomically high expectations so early in development. And frankly, most of what you've mentioned are incredibly minor, superficial details that don't necessarily relate to the core Gothic experience or what this game is doing with its own style, which tells me you've missed the point entirely and are being overly negative for no good reason. If you're going to stubbornly insist that it can't be "Gothic-like" because it doesn't have the same prison atmosphere, or doesn't have voice actors, or doesn't have "silly" character lines, or because it's being done in 2D when Gothic was done in 3D, then your definition of what constitutes a Gothic-like experience is so incredibly narrow and restrictive that I dare say you'd be unimpressed by anything that isn't directly copying every single aspect of the original game. If you're going to criticize Drova for giving location names when you enter an area with regards to things like the lack of hand-holding in exploration, for example, then you should be far more critical of the Gothic games for giving you a map with a GPS-arrow icon that shows you your exact position in the world and the direction you're facing. "Loading screens everywhere" is also a ridiculous claim, as there are only 3 load points once you get into the actual game space; one for the tavern, and one for each of the two "dungeons," and it's not like Gothic was COMPLETELY devoid of loading screens either as you had to go through a load screen to enter its dungeons like the Old Mine, New Mine, Orc Cemetary, Temple of the Sleeper, and so on. The ONLY load screen you can possibly criticize as being "un-Gothic" is the quick load to enter the tavern, but that's literally one instance that lasts a meager two seconds and is hardly worth getting upset over. "Flashy anime style fighting elements" is part of the game's visual style, and it's allowed to do certain things differently to put its own spin on the experience. If you're "disappointed" that I as part of the Gothic community am not being super critical of this game, then I'm disappointed in you for being so unforgiving and unaccepting of someone taking inspiration from Gothic and putting their own twist on it, and for being something of an elitist gatekeeper about what can and can't be considered appropriate for a Gothic-inspired game. Like it or not, Gothic is such a unique game that there's really nothing else like it and thus we as fans don't have much choice about seeking out these types of games, so how about being grateful that someone is even TRYING to draw inspiration from Gothic, instead of getting upset and offended because it isn't exactly what you would personally envision?

I'm probably not as eloquent with words like you so show mercy on me greatest of all ramblers. :'D I would like that all RPG devs have the strong points of piranha bytes former vision on how a great RPG has to be and I like your videos and agree with most of your points regarding this. There is just a next to 0% number of games that satisfy me after growing up with gothic and I'm spoiled to the bone... ;) But I don't like claiming another company's games' successful elements to be in their own game. That's propaganda, hyping up fans who obviously have a strong love for the genre. OFC not everything is thought through and very wacky sometimes, but it was a completely immersive experience for that day's standards and that's the point in games I care about the most. My subjective preference for immersive storytelling and gameplay prevents me from liking this game that's a fact. Old school charm for others and outdated "narrow-minded" material to rant over for me... I can't be fully objective anymore when someone uses another game's name for their marketing... but mostly when it is about gothic. Too much goes in a completely other direction when that happens and I'm sick of it. As I said before, I appreciate the fact that there are devs out there who want to make better RPGs but when marketing their game they shouldn't compare them openly with something that has nothing to do with the game, in particular, it stirs me up every time i read articles about games who claim to be better than this and have things from another game blablabla and NEVER live up to anything because they created their own bubble of false expectations!!! I really hate that it always has to be like this. :(

To be fair, one of those messages was a load screen message which they can't account for -- different people will have different load times depending on system specs, so a load screen that might take 8 seconds for one person ends up taking two seconds for someone else. Granted in this day and age, most peoples' computers are going to be fast enough that the load screens will happen relatively fast, but as you saw when the game was loading the full game space (and not just a tiny little tutorial area) there was more time to read it. Given that those are just reminders of other things you're told elsewhere in actual tutorials, they're inconsequential. The second one, where the character starts talking at the start of the tutorial, was partially my fault due to the "Let's Play" format of reacting to the previous situation and talking over things as they started happening. If you start reading the character's text when it appears, and not four seconds later like I did, then there should be enough time to read it. So it's not like the developers are completely incompetent about pacing the information -- one isn't entirely their fault, and the other was basically my fault. Let's not rush to judge them and their efforts over such trifling issues.
