@@ThanatoselNyx I mean if this game was balanced I don't think it would be nearly as fun, and that's not a bad thing. You don't need the alien powers to be balanced in this game to have fun, and that's the goal of it. It's not like MtG or something with a competitive scene. Having aliens with differing power levels makes the game varied and replayable, it adds unpredictability and can make for some incredible gaming moments. It's a decision, not laziness.
@glowerworm

@@ThanatoselNyx they didn't say balance is for wimps, they said "fair isn't fun". I agree. A balanced game would be boring, the winner would be determined at the beginning and itd just be going through the motions until they win. And as someone else said, the game self-balances because a good power gets bullied into submission.

i love the fact that this game is designed in a way where you can pick an objectively over-powered species with the sole counter-measure being “if you pick one of the OP ones, then everyone will bully you, so picking a weaker species might be better for the long game”. for a game like this it honestly feels like a great way to make players start making risk-reward choices right out of the gate

Cosmic encounter is one of my favourite board games of all time! It is so nuanced, and there is a moment halfway through your first or second game where it clicks and you realise how fantastically socially strategic it is
The one true sport of Calvinball finally getting its just recognition (even if only in reference). Thanks BDG!
46:04 Now, if I'm not wrong, since Brian's card says "before any other effects are applied", it would only divide Clayton's *10* by three, then it would have 23 subtracted from it, and then his human card would turn it back into a 42, so he would have actually won against Brian 56 to 31. And even if the subtraction happened after the 42, it would still be 33 to 31. Regardless, I thoroughly enjoyed the video as always. Please never stop making Overboard.

actually my theory is that simone serves the literary purpose of the everyman, like watson in sherlock holmes or nick carraway in the great gatsby. she is the vessel by which the viewer relates to and understands the world, ie the events of each episode of overboard. that's why she's the only one who catches on to being gaslighted by brian in werewolf (though she is quickly convinced afterwards) and she begins to graffiti the stars in cosmic encounter when the viewer too is confused by the events that occur.
watching brian trying to stack his ships is
That ending is the perfect insane cap to this adventure.
I love Union Aunt Jenna's vibes in this. So supportive yet so cunning
I feel like pacifist could be really really good in the right hands. Let me see if I can describe this You are pacifist and you trigger your ability. You win/tie with an N card Your opponent wants to minimize their losses, aiming for a tie and playing an N You can use this as a mind game and play an attack card, but if they predict it and play an attack you can still win the classic way. In short, it makes the 4 possible outcomes of the battle into 2 wins a tie and a tossup, much better than normal.
