Knight is /naɪt/, Needle is /'ni:dəl and now is /naʊ/. I answered this above, but actually needle is the wrong answer. The phonetic transcription has knight and now beginning with the same sound only. They also don't teach this in k12 so technically needle and now should still both be the correct answer. Unless teachers have just given up (which kinda think they have to be honest)
I can't be the only one that laughed at Gavin when he said "You can meander, but is it aimless?" right? He sounded and got really philosophical out of nowhere with that statement XD

Hi Tom! ☺
As someone who's training to be a Speech Language Pathologist, that Needle/Now question was total bullshit. Both have the phonemic /n/ sound, exactly the same as the first sound in knight.
@Kazutoification
10 жыл бұрын
I think the question was asking for the actual sound from the first letter and vowel. So, needle has a 'neee' sound and now has a 'nuh' sound. Knight also has a 'nuh' sound. Perhaps that's what the question was asking.
@feralcatgirl
10 жыл бұрын
knight: /naɪt/ needle: /niːdl/ now: /naʊ/ yeah, i think 'now' should have been the correct answer as well.
@MurdocBack

Knight and needle has a "e/i" pronunciation after the "n" sound, whilst now has a more "a" related pronunciation. This makes "needle", sound more like "knight" than "now". So for the official American English language, needle would be the most likely candidate.

I couldn't handle that calendar question. Just look at it. For one, the number of days in JUNE has NOTHING to do with the question. Secondly, you can just simply look at the answers. You have four answers, all of which are multiples of 7. You're asked for the THIRD Wednesday. I love ya, Gavin....but holy shit, man!
@DrBreakfastMachine
10 жыл бұрын
If Gavin stopped and looked at the answers more closely I'm sure he would have figured it out but he focused on trying to do the math in his head and eventually just picked a random answer because he got frustrated. Honestly, I didn't get the question either because I was in the same boat as Gavin, trying to count out the days instead of looking at the answers to see if there was an easier way. Plus he's not the one who said that kite starts with the same sound as knight.

Actually the number of days in June DOES matter, at least determining whether it has 30 or 31 days, to then determine how many days May has. If May 3rd falls on wednesday, and may has 31 days, then June 1st falls on a thursday so answer is 21st. But if May has 30 days, june 1st is a wednesday, thus the third wednesday is the 15th.

@Nyrata
10 жыл бұрын
Trust me, I'm always very careful when posting comments online, if only because I'm not a native speaker and every word I choose I think about if it's right or wrong in context. I don't see anything offensive about my comment. Not only is the focus of it clearly positive, it doesn't begin to compare to all the rape and death threats and curses people post daily on all kinds of outlets. True, as horrible as it is, cancer is a real thing. But nowhere did I mitigate cancer or it's effects; instead I focussed on the extreme positive effect of Geoff's laugh. Happiness can cure mental hurt and that too can effect a person's physical health. Those who get depressed during the process of fighting cancer are more likely to stay sick longer, or never get better at all, compared to those who have a fighter-mentality. I'm sure most people can feel that positivity which fuels a good attitude in this video. So, in a sense, there is truth in my comment. And, some well-meant friendly advise... if you really found that comment offensive, I suggest you never travel to the Low Countries. People wish all kinds of horrible deaths and diseases upon each other every day. Unless you can handle a healthy daily dose of 'I hope you get the typhus and die in a ditch', you might wanna stay away...

tibschris Trick questions aren't hard, they're just stupid. That is the part of the question you /don't/ need to read, because that's stating a fact. Gavin starts reading, realises he knows the fact, then moves on to the question part of the question. Trick questions are designed for smart-arse 10 year olds who don't know anything, so instead get easy questions like that.
@tibschris
10 жыл бұрын
Tatyboy1337 Maybe it's because I'm an astrophysicist so that particular question couldn't trick me. A better question would have been "which way does the Earth rotate to cause the Sun to appear to rise and set? [East] [West]" Yeah, questions that _intend to trick_ aren't fair. This is just a poor game all-round.

elementshero89 We were meant to learn Spanish, actually, but after fifth grade they cut it. So I can believe that it could go both ways--it depends on the region and how much the local government views the education budget as less of an investment and more of a till to reach into whenever they want to cut taxes to stir up base support.
Holy shit. I'm only 1/3 of the way through the video, and I've already seen one wrong answer (fucking ZHEE, are you kidding me?) and one question with TWO FUCKING CORRECT ANSWERS (knight). Terrible trivia game.

Knight only had one correct answer and it was Needle. Now does not have a similar sound to Knight compared to Needle. Say the words and you'd notice that.

Just 'saying the words' doesn't work as everyone has different accents. For me, they all sound the same. For someone else, all three words may start with completely different sounds. I have taught phonics and you teach 'kn___' words, and 'n___' words. Needle and Now are too similar for there to be a correct answer.

The letter "J" is indeed pronounced like 'zhee' and sounds like a "G." Now on the other hand, "G" in French is pronounced 'jay' to sound like "J." It's basically the opposite in France.
It was literally impossible for the answer to be anything other than the 21st. What. The. Fuck.

That fucking French question. Nobody ever pronounces "J" as "Zhee". I don't think there are even any Oriental languages with that pronunciation. It is either a soft G, a Y, or an H. Franks (and Brits among a few others) say the former, Germanics say the middle, and most romance languages say the latter (Spaniards, etc). Pet peeve.

They all begin with the alveolar nasal, or /n/. It's probably one of those elementary school things they teach kids in order to (supposedly) simplify it, only for them to later learn that what they thought they knew is total bullshit.

Well, if i had to choose one, it would definitely be 'Now'. They asked for a word starting with the same sound, and Knight/Now start with hard n while Needle starts with soft n, so i don't get why it's needle... I'm not sure if americans make the difference though.
@Nickyyy-

Knight starts with "nu", now starts with "nu". I think this is correct because nothing else makes sense while if you sound it out my way sort of sounds right in a way.
I remember this show and hated it because the questions are obviously not elementary school questions. Also, I still don't understand that "Knight" question... someone explain to me how "now" isn't an answer but "needle" is the answer.

The state border ones are fucked up too. Even if you were able to recognize the state, WHICH border is it talking about? Pretty sure every state except for Alaska and Hawaii border multiple other states. Not to mention the two math questions Gavin got. There's no way a fifth grader would be able to do either of those in their heads, let alone most adults.

Knight is /naɪt/, Needle is /'ni:dəl and now is /naʊ/. That's the phonetic transcription for each of those 3 words. Needle is actually the wrong answer because it's phonetic transcription is /'n where as now perfectly matches knight with /n. However they definitely aren't teaching phonetic transcription to k12 students so that entire question is garbage as the answer should be now and needle.

Really, people? Every time I look at the comments I see people whining at Jack for being himself. First you want him to talk more. Now you want him to stop talking. See, this is what made JonTron leave Game Grumps. As soon as he left, people were whining that it wasn't the same without him. I'd bet if Jack left, people would do exactly the same thing. As far as I'm concerned, Jack (if you're reading this), keep doing what you're doing at RT. And when people complain, which they will, just rub it in their faces that you've got a job at a great company that the majority of the fanbase would kill for. And enjoy relishing in your victory.
