Let's Mosey: A Slow Translation Of Final Fantasy VII: Part Three
I’ve been playing Final Fantasy VII in Japanese and English at the same time, and I’m noticing a lot of neat little differences. This is part three of my video series.
Today, we’re going to meet Tifa and Aeris. Everyone in the English version refers to Cloud and Tifa as “childhood friends”, though does that mean something more interesting in Japanese? The answer (which is, “sort of”) may blow your mind-or it might just entertain you. I would appreciate it if it did either of those for you.
As always, a warning: any Japanese you learn over the course of this video might never be of any use whatsoever to you.
Also, hey, you can follow me on Twitter! (@108)

“Just go to Japan and wait 10 years.” Unparalleled advice.

I love how these videos gradually become more "Tim Rogers"-y with each video. Like he was holding back in the first video, or something.

Actually I think it was that choosing the "be strong" option scores points with Barret, while the "I don't think I can hold on" option scores points with Tifa. Kinda interesting, when you start wondering why those appeal to either of them according to their perception of Cloud at the time

Thank you so much for making this series. I'm japanese and I love Aerith since I was a kid. Although Aerith is really popular and likeable character in japan, I was surprised and didn't understand why ppl blaming Aerith so bad and calling her a whoxe or bixtch on the internet after I played Remake, and also some ppl think zack was her ex. I was so shocked by knowing those mistranslations. Your understanding of japanese is wonderful and I appreciate that. I hope more ppl will know the true meanings.

It's less the English translations fault and more the last 2 decades of internet trolls peddling their head cannon narrative as objective fact. If someone wanted to know what FF7 was about they would see the vocal minority screaming CloudxTifa and assume "I guess this is FF7" and it just snowballed from there. Thankfully Remake is here to set the record straight and public opinion of Aerith is on the up swing.

I've been enjoying learning along with these vids and hearing your perspective on the script and how they impact the characterization (the "childhood friend" description was well presented and captures a lot of the challenge of translation). It certainly makes me prepared for unexpected differences when the Remake finally comes out. The section about Aerith and Zack's past clarifies a lot of the confusion as a result of Crisis Core. As an Aerith fan, I was also glad to hear your opinion on her portrayal and easy chemistry with Cloud - I always felt that from the English script but good to know it's reflected in the Japanese script too. I hope you keep going as far as you can with this project!

I realize I'm very late to this. But the use of osananajimi also seems like it might have been a conscious decision as a way to poke fun at the idea that at this point in the game, Cloud may not, in fact, be able to recall how he knows or met Tifa at all, given the literal amnesiac gaps in his memory.
I'm just going to mosey on through this series again in 2021, don't mind me
As somebody who is studying japanese, I find these interesting and extremely helpful, keep up the good work!
So seeing that "Aerith" looks like "earth" was interesting and makes that a little more viable in my book. But when it came to "Aeris" I always interpreted it as a play on words for "heiress", as in she was a descendant of the ancients/cetra who terraformed/cultivated the planet and was possibly the rightful inherit-er/protector(what have you) of the planet. I dunno maybe I just read too much into that.

Such a great and funny video! Parts got me laughing too much. "Chunky Purple Freak Wagon." Also, I loved how you included the deeper nuances to the Japanese words used. It gives the whole dialogue more meaning, imo. It's interesting to see how a lot of the Japanese words got lost in translation. I'll be sure to stay tuned for your next videos. And I'm really thankful you like Aerith, as well. I'll be looking forward to seeing more of how funny and cute her character was in the Japanese version! I also want to applaud you for saying that "the story sets Aerith up as the true love interest option" and how her death gave Cloud "tremendous determination." It's something a lot of us agree with. Please do continue and keep up the awesome work!

Yeah. I'm a Cloti shipper through and through (partially because I have a huge soft-spot for the victorious childhood friend), but Aerith is still one of my favorite characters and her contribution to Cloud's motivation should not be minimized. Though I see her contribution as Cloud feeling extreme guilt because he was standing *right there* when she was killed and very nearly killed her himself while also mourning a relationship that might have been. I don't think *Cloud* really knows what his feelings for her were, since he still wasn't himself when she died. Hopefully, after Advent Children, he'll move on and maybe even marry Tifa.

Chunky Purple Freakwagon is my new band name.
I know there is a scene between Cloud and Aerith in the church that got horribly translated in english and that you didn't show. It's when she's about to jump. In japanese, Cloud says he'll catch her and Aerith tells him to hold her tight (in a nervous "you better" way, in fact, it could be shortened to this). In english, this little bit of interaction is lost and becomes... this : Cloud "All right. I'll hold them off." Aerith "Right. Make sure they don't get through!" So, in english, it's like they're talking about the soldiers... not about Cloud assuring Aerith he'll help her jump safely.The english translation made no sense at times.
@zombiejade898

RadicalDreamer17 Wow, I had no idea about this bit of interaction. So different! Another, a more humorous section I was wondering about was the "slum drunk" line, and how that might have been in Japanese.
@RadicalDreamer17

It was actually discovered because Aerith's line was used in a Valentine Day bit of fanservice in the japanese version of Record Keeper (mobile game). Non japanese fans were confused when they learned it was from the jumping moment in the church (because what's romantic about it in english?). Japanese fans apparently explained why this quote was used for the Valentine event. That's how we/I found out about the english translation fail.

Also - it'd be cool to get another Japanese-fluent person or somebody with localization experience on these episodes, so that you can enter into a dialogue and show different perspectives on the tricky business of translation.
9:48 - Her name was supposed to be a mixture of Air + Earth [1] (after all, she has a deep connection with the Planet and "Cloud" has something to do with "Air" #Clerith). While Earith (/ˈɛəɹɪθ/) is closer to the katakana, as a personal preference I always found Eairth (/ˈɛɪɹθ/) more fascinating. If you don't know how to read IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet), either search on Wikipedia "IPA vowel chart with audio" and "IPA pulmonic consonant chart with audio", or type "IPA Reader" on a search engine then search for a site whose top-level domain is xyz. English is such a weird language, not only it has way too many vowels (you and I both agree on this), but also if you hear a word for the first time more often than not you can't spell it correctly and if you see a word for the first time more often than not you can't pronounce it correctly. I am enthralled by this series. Here's to hoping you do lots more! (And maybe other games too one day?)
I'm loving these. Keep 'em coming.
I was inspired by this series to replay final fantasy 7, but through the fan retranslation mod. I started after episode 1 and finished it a week ago, but I also don't have a job. The translation's ... pretty good, but I find it gets a little literal sometimes. I first played this game when I was about 8 or 9 and I saw the "baby" line. I thought it was referring to marlene for a while. I think it's interesting because those typos and issues slowly disappeared for me on subsequent replays. I figure I was older, and my understanding of context helped smooth them over. Basically I'm trying to say that language is a really cool thing and this video puts that on display.
I always pour through these videos. I love seeing the translation and would love to be able to do what you do.
A chunky purple freakwagon flies out…on the back of a chocobo cart, amirite fellas?
I was searching for "Mosey" on Highwind and got this. Great videos!
The flubbed "little baby" Barrett translation probably survived the editing pass because it sounds like Barrett teasing Cloud about romance.
These videos are so great.

These are great! Go go go, more more more.
It's funny how these English terms for Japanese terms have changed the way the simple English term is viewed by people who have some context, an anime fan will get a lot different connotations from the words "childhood friend" than a normal English speaker will...
Damn right I can't wait to find out where the chunky purple freakwagon is going!!!
There's always been the "subs vs. dubbed" debate, but I was always more for subs since they were most often so much closer to the original Japanese meaning. And, if I knew any phrases, I could mildly translate myself. But in dubbed anything (even translated manga in print), so much can get lost or even changed in translation.
This is such a fun an interesting series!
Quite interesting. I will definitely subscribe to this channel because I want to see what you say about the original script in the scene I just got to in my latest play through. It's the flashback scene where you see Cloud and Zack escape from the experiments in the Shinra Mansion and head to Midgar in the back of the old man's truck. There are some lines which at least in the Steam version suggest to me that they were together. I took some screenshots when I saw it, but the line from Zack is basically: (To cloud) "What will you do when we get to Midgar?" "I have a place I can crash" "No wait, the mother lives there too" "Guess that's out" This to me suggests that the "place" he can crash is Aerith's house, then decides not too as her mother (the mother) also lives there. I don't think he's talking about his own mother because firstly, why not mention his father too, and secondly, they live nowhere near Midgar. So with this in mind, I definitely want to see how the script in the original Japanese looks in this scene, and whether it strengthens, or weakens the relationship argument.

Don't know if you ever got the answer to this question. I saw a comment by the user 'hian' who speaks Japanese and compared the translations of the truck scene on the video "The problem with Zack and Aerith" by Orion85. This person commented several times on the video actually. It's not the pinned comment so you'll have to scroll down to find it - it's in a section discussing their compilation of all of the Aerith and Zack conversations. I copied and pasted their explanation of the truck conversation below: ★Zack convo on truck : ■ This is a real nugget, because it's almost wrong in its entirety. {Zack} “I know what I'm gonna do.” (ore haachikochini ategaarunda) 「俺はあちこちにあてがあるんだ END} ■ "I've got places to stay all over," {Zack} “I got a place I can crash for a while…” (minnano sewa nnatte ......) 「みんなの世話んなって……」 ■ "Got helped out by everyone/tons of people..." {Zack} “No wait, the mother lives there too.” ( a , dono onnanoko mo oya toisshoni sun derunoka ......) 「あ、どの女の子も親といっしょに住んでるのか……」 ■ "Ah, I guess each of the girls still live with their parents..." Zack literally uses the phrase どの女の子も or "ever which girl/no matter which girl", an explicitly plural expression in Japanese. He is not speaking of A particular girl. This is significant because in Japanese there is no demand to stress the singular or plural when it comes to nouns. Whether I have a dog, or 5 dogs in my house, the standard expression in Japanese when inquired about pets would be 私は犬を飼っています。The fact therefore, that the authors chose to have Zack explicitly stress plurality here is therefore clear intent to have it be understood and recognized as him having multiple girls. Also note that the previous statement about places to go also being plural in Japanese rather than singular.
