I am a self taught herbalist. In my view, a forever learner, in fact a beginner even after 25+ years studying herbs. There is just so much to learn. You are so wonderfully empowering. I support your truth of sharing and encouraging learning rather than dependency. You are terrific and THANK YOU!

We call this "Puha" in Maori (New Zealand Maori), the prickly type is called "Tutu puha", and we eat them in a broth called a "Boil Up", each has its own flavour and texture, we eat them before and after bloom including the flowers, whole plant (Without the roots), or just leaves and stems, for traditional medical "Rongoa in Maori" purposes we are taught to look for leaves that are partially damaged, but not too damaged that they are dying, the idea being that the plant is in a healing phase and directing extra energy and nutrients to that part that is damaged, when you are sick, injured or unwell your body does the same thing, including the mind. So when you take the medicine you are aligning your healing phase with that of the plant in combination for a better healing experience, Rongoa is an overall well being and not just chemical compositions, that combine with other chemicals in your body to crate a reaction, the movement of energy and the well being of the plant are just as important, if not more so, as the chemical reactions one may experience from what Paracelsus called "The Essence" extracted from a plant....Kia Tau Terangimarie (May peace prevail)...Love from Aotearoa.

@@ridgehilljillie9429 The plant is usually picked at ground level leaving the roots intact underground, it is then washed to remove any insects, dust or other foreign particles, and depending on the type of puha (Especially this prickly type) it is rubbed between the hands during the cleaning process as water is run through the hands, or Mukumuku, we call it, to lesson the harshness of the prickly leaves, this plant when used in a broth is similar to spinach in taste, though some varieties can be quite bitter, the mukumuku helps to lesson bitterness as well, and is also a good source of iron in the diet...I hope this is helpful to you...Peace, or in Maori "Kia Tau Terangi Marie" (May peace prevail)..

Hey April! I have been nurturing these wild lettuce plants all season, my husband is concerned that the plant we have may be toxic, I know you say either prickly lettuce or wild lettuce are interchangeable but could I send you a picture of our plant and you can confirm I'm not going to kill him with it when I process it! 🤣 he currently and has used kratom for years now but would like to use something more readily available in our area for multiple reasons. Thank you!!! 🧡

Thank you! You must have read my mind. I was looking to see if you have done a video on Prickly Wild Lettuce yet and then bam, there it was today. I have been fascinated all summer with prickly lettuce. I grew up thinking this prickly noxious weed was called "milk weed", until just a month or so ago I learned otherwise. I have taken wild lettuce for years and it helps greatly with many of my auto immune illnesses. Okay April, looking forward to have you showing us how to make a tincture. I walk several miles every morning and this stuff is all over the trail. Because of your video's I have learned to identify several herbs along my walks. It's been so much fun.

I have been weaning myself off of a variety of pain meds over the last 5 years. I am doing it slowly because I was on them for 35 yrs. I have also enlisted the help of some medical cannabis to help in the transition. I do not sit around and smoke pot all day, I use it very sparingly. Also cleaned up my diet and lost weight etc, which helps with inflammation etc. We are blessed to have options for our pain! I feel like all things natural are always better. The plants were left here for our health and well being!!

In new Zealand that is a staple with the natives. We call it Puha and is a natural digestive cleaner and liver detoxifier, best eaten young before flowering starts boiled with meat and potato and you can roll it in a tea towel to get rid of the prickly bit but I still like the prickly crunch so I leave it. ❤ great healing plant. You will love NZ for it's healing plants.
