I make bucket hats and donate them to the Children's Cancer Hospital. To speed up cutting, I made cardboard templates of the pattern pieces and trace them onto SF10; do a rough cut around the pieces; fuse the interfacing to the fabric and then cut out along the lines. This lets you maximize your interfacing by drawing your shapes close together and makes it easy to fussy cut your fabric because you can see the design through the interfacing when you place it.

I love this, cutting interfacing to match the pattern piece is such a pain.

I use the plastic 'cutting' boards I get at the Dollar Tree to cut out my pattern pieces. Then the plastic lasts longer. ;) I use a marking pen to trace around the pieces and then cut the pieces out. I have the gold document envelopes that hold these plastic pattern pieces with a picture of the item the pattern makes on the outside of the envelope.

I used to use the rigid cardboard for my pattern/templates but after a while the cardboard gets a bit frazzled at the edges. I decided to try clear sheets (the kind that are used for the covers of business reports or spiral bound instructions). You can get these sheets at paper supply stores or office stores, I get the thickest ones, there are usually 3 different thicknesses. $tree also has thick plastic cutting sheets in their kitchen area. I also print the pattern on sticker paper and adhere the paper to the plastic. With bigger pieces like this pattern I connect the pattern pieces with clear packing tape. I’ve been doing this for 8 years and my pattern pieces still have their shape.

I love that we can really play with material and interfacing, you know? And it really all works out pretty well.

When you leave the opening in the upper part of the hat piece(riser), instead of sewing or pressing the seam open, I would put the seam allowances to the one side. Then pull the hat through the opening and you can machine stitch that hole closed by "stitching in the ditch" on those two seams and that would close the hole and stitch the upper parts of the hat together to hold them together.

Thank you for this free pattern,I've been wanting to make a bucket hat for ages but like you thought it would be complicated. Looking forward to this being the first thing I make when we get moved into our new house. Well done. x

I'm home recovering from surgery and watched your video and whipped up a hat for a 2 yr old little girl (18 in. circumference). It turned out better than I expected and I'm sure that I'll crank out a few more in the coming weeks.

It’s great. I actually bought one at Animal Kingdom and a seam is splitting. I made it for my granddaughter. I think adding a plastic snap would work so the brim can stay up would be adorable too!

You know I think I got so lucky coming across this pattern from Mood. I'm also not the biggest fan of most bucket hat designs. But this one just works so nice.

I have made bucket hats and they are fun!!! My daughter wants a floppy bucket for a trip to Siesta Keys in a few weeks. This is perfect! I could use the extra large brim with the medium hat part and it would be perfect!
