London is the capital of the United Kingdom. The pop¬ulation of London is about 8 million. The city is situated on the river Thames.
London is very old. It has more than 20 centuries old history. Tra¬ditionally it is divided into several parts, the City, West¬minster, the West End and the East, End. They are very different from each other.
The City is the business and financial centre. This part is the oldest in London. A great amount of banks, offices and firms are located here.
Few people live in the City but over a million come to work here. There are two places of inter¬est in the City: St. Paul's Cathedral and the Tower of London. St. Paul's Cathedral was built in the 17th cen¬tury by the architect Christopher Wren. The Tower of London was built in the 15th century. It was used as a fortress, a palace and a prison. Now it's a museum.
Westminster is the aristocratic official part of Lon¬don. There are Buckingham Palace where the Queen lives and the Houses of Parliament along the north bank of the Thames.
The clock tower of the Houses of Parliament is famous for its big hour bell known as «Big Ben». Westminster Abbey is the place where the coronation of nearly all kings and queens has taken place. Many of them are buried here as well as some other famous people of the country.
The West End is the richest and most beautiful part of London. The best hotels, restaurants, shops, clubs, parks and houses are situated there. There are many tour-ists there from different countries of the world.
Trafalgar Square is the geographical centre of Lon¬don. It was named in the memory of Admiral Nelson's victory in the battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The tall Nel¬son's Column stands in the middle of the square.
The East End is an industrial district of London. There are many factories there. The region is densely populat¬ed by working class families.

The tower of London (The white tower), was built by William the conqueror, (Who took the crown of England when he defeated and killed, King Harold Godwinson at the battle of Hastings in the year 1066. Work started around 1089 and it took 20 years to build. Later monarchs added to the fortress, culminating in 2 concentric rings of curtain walls and towers. In the year 1666, there was the great fire of London, which destroyed thousands of homes, businesses and churches. It was seen as an opportunity to rebuild the city on a magnificent, grand scale. Alas, the pressure to rebuild and get the economy back up and running, meant that we just rebuilt on the original street plan. Sir Christopher Wren, had designed a new London, but with the pressure to rebuild quickly, he was restricted to St Pauls and a number of other churches and public buildings. He is buried in the cathedral with a plaque that states "Reader, if you seek his monument, look around you" I'm not a teacher, but I do love history, hope this helps.
