Let's Go Sailboat Shopping With $50,000 - Ep 270 - Lady K Sailing

This week, it's sailboat shopping season! We go shopping for sailboats for under $50,000 and see some boats like Pearson, Beneteau, Tayana from Robert Perry, and a Catamaran we don't really like. We look at common boat shopping mistakes and talk about what to look for in a sailboat - how to shop for a boat.

If your budget is $50K you should be looking at boats for $35 to $40K because there is always another 20 to 30% to survey, move the boat, fix this or that that needs fixing or upgrading.

That's great advice and that's sort of what I'm doing. My budget is 30k-35k so I'm looking at boats that are 25k and under. There's a C&C I've been watching for awhile which is just under 20k.

That has been my experience buying my Tartan 31. Got her for US$32.5K but with sales tax, survey fee, boatyard fees, refit costs, and all the miscellaneous gear to kit out the boat, the total came to over $45K on the vessel. My costs for the 2023 season, including dockage, haul-out and winter storage put the total cost to over $50K. So add another $20K to what you spend--if you pay $50K, plan on shelling out at least $70K.

@@thomas_dries Thomas, In 2016 I purchased a 1998 Catalina 28 mii for $28k. The reason is we desired a small pocket cruiser we could weekend on. My spouse insisted on a walk through transom and swim step, which the Catalina 28 has. These pocket cruisers have all the amenities of a larger cruiser, hot water, shower at the swim platform and in the wet head, propane stove and oven, etc... The Mii-s came with a 21 HP Universal that is very strong for this boat. Head room is about 6'2". The back double berth is tight, but oK for grand kids. V-berth is good for us old folks. Catalina built about 800 of these in two versions (mi and mii) and there are still many around for sale and sail! Not a large amount of storage, but enough for a few days of cruising. Nice thing about a Catalina is that the company is still around and parts can be sourced.

As soon as I read the title I thought of an 80’s Perry design! And when you mentioned Perry I KNEW you were going to say the Tayana 37 since that’s the stereotypical Bob Perry design and one of my dream boats. For right now I’m in the smaller cousin, the Baba 30, but it’s no less of an ocean crossing tank! Another boat I really like are the Gulfstar boats in the low 40’ range. Real solid boats under $50k

I’d suggest looking at some of the more “fringe”, brands and designers. That’s where you’ll find the super deals. Because lots of folks don’t know much about non production boats, because there is less info to go on. I bought my old catamaran for a half of what an equal cat would have cost. My current monohull is a world class cruiser with 37 K miles. It cost under 40K. She turns heads wherever I go. Market, boat, builder and designer knowledge give you the tools you need to get the best prices. It does not take years to inform yourself.

Can we have an episode on how much things cost. What I mean is if I'm shopping for a boat I'll be comparing boats that may have different equipment, with thing in different states of repair. If I'm planning on being short-handed, I'll want dinghy davits, windlass remote. One boat might have new sails, another sails that look like old saggy sheets that a shame old patched pillowcases. One might need new batteries, or be due an engine overhaul. Without having at least a clue how much remediation work will cost, and how long it is likely to take, it is difficult to compare boats.

Hey Tim, shopping here, could you do a piece on what it takes, costs, to get a boat from the site of purchase home? Boat prices in California are nuts (always have been) and, you're right, boats of all kinds and price points are all over the place (and for some reason in Florida, Mass, and Texas mostly, at least the ones I'm looking for), but the "deal of lifetime" boat may not be in my 'backyard' and a purchase price would have to figure in a very long sail home or a ride on a semi-transport trailer across the U.S. Mega-thanks!

Thanks for another good video! One silly question that might help get more people sailing, more easily: What if a boat follows me home? What do I DO with it?! OK, sail it. I got that part. But what about mooring? Renting a slip at a marina doesn't fit for the bargain boat shopper. Seems like Lady K has a slip at a lower-cost yacht club? I don't think we HAVE those in Maryland, USA-- yacht clubs are all expensive here. Can I buy a huge anchor and a mooring ball and put it in somewhere out of the way of navigation but close to a public boat ramp, and access the boat by dinghy? Or should I rent a mooring ball from a marina? The classic mistake is to buy a cheap boat and then sink boatloads of money just keeping it; mooring costs can be huge, even before repair and maintenance costs on the boat itself. Can you help me avoid that mistake? Thanks, and keep up the good work!

I am shopping in this range. Really have been for a few years. Timing has not been kind and I had to let a DE38 slip out of grasp waiting for some projects to complete and probate to resolve. One thing I have found a few times in the $35 to $55K range is "custom boats" . It seems these boats are small in numbers ranging from a dozen or so to just one. Due to this, there is little known about their performance and their reliability beyond some stereotypical assumptions about the design. What are your thought on custom boats of this nature?
