Im so glad Neil addressed the Tommy criticisms. Tommy said those things in the theatre. Moments later he got shot in the leg with an arrow and shot in the back of the head. Then he, an injured Ellie and Dina had to travel back to Jackson. Jesse isn't coming, he got killed by Abby. So that alone is enough to change his tune. But a year or so passes and he's more than likely got his own PTSD and issues from what happened, if he wasn't injured theres no doubt he would not ask Ellie to go. But he cant. He's probably been obsessing over it, tearing his marriage apart. All stemming from Abby. And to him, Ellie is the only other person who could possibly have some idea of what he is going through. So he turns to her. So no, I don't think someone changing their mind and then lashing out in anger at a friend or family member is out of character. I feel a lot of us have lashed out for far less.

It's believable that Tommy would want revenge after becoming disabled and losing his wife. However, it's NOT believable that Ellie would abandon her family in the middle of the zombie apocalypse to go on a 1,024 mile, two month trip to Santa Barbara to seek revenge again. And, if Ellie was crazy enough to ditch them to kill more people to 'cure' her PTSD, then she'd surely follow through and be crazy enough to kill Abby.

@@sunnysied713 With the barn scene and reading the journal, it's clear that Ellie still has severe PTSD, and you can't get therapy in the post-apocalypse, so it's not that strange that she'd go resume her revenge quest despite having a happy family in hopes to "cure" it. In her own words, "I don't sleep, I don't eat". Plus stubbornness is a big part of Ellie's character, so that just sells it even more. And yeah that she lets Abby go, is slightly strange, but at least the way they make her spare Abby has some thought and purpose and reason behind it. First off they make Abby malnourished and abused, so she becomes visually pitiable. Secondly they stick Lev with her, so seeing her take care of a child, makes it even more forgivable. And lastly while drowning Abby, Ellie sees an image of Joel alive for the first time since leaving the farm, and it's not just a random image, it's from a memory of her telling him she'd like to try to forgive him, reminding her that she's capable of forgiveness, and that's why she lets her go. And if Ellie had killed Abby, she would've become the same monster she saw Abby as, only to Lev. And Abby's entire playable section would've been pointless. I'm sorry it felt far-fetched to you, I'm just explaining why it worked for me.

@@nitishthatte407 Abby was in Santa Barbara, which is 1,044 miles away from Jackson. That's almost half the distance across the U.S. It would take two months to get there on horseback. So that's a very inconvenient revenge target. She's very far away and it would take very long to get there. In two months, Abby could be looooong gone. Sure, Ellie has PTSD, but her problems aren't MAJOR enough to push her to abandon her family to pursue revenge across the country. She didn't eat well, sleep well, had some panic attacks and some nightmares. Besides that, the writers showed her having a healthy relationship with Dina and J.J. (interacting and dancing) and she was doing a great job of helping run the farmstead (chores, taking care of the baby, etc). Ellie was never shown to be a physical threat to Dina and J.J.'s happiness. She wasn't portrayed as emotionally distant, depressed or non-functional. Dina was a very loving and caring wife who did everything possible to support her during her rough times. Give her an award. Ellie didn't have any MAJOR problems that compelled her to ditch the family... and try to cure her lack of appetite and sleep... by killing more people... and enduring more trauma. Ellie forgives/pardon/shows mercy towards Abby because 1) Abby looks pathetic, 2) Lev reminds her about her relationship with Joel and 3) a one second flashback scene pops into her head when she is trying to murder her most hated enemy. Abby turned her body into a living weapon to enact revenge upon Joel. Who cares if she lost her muscles and looked pathetic? Lol. Just because Abby looks pathetic, that doesn't mean Abby has earned forgiveness or Ellie should pity her. Abby is lucky that she lost all her gains - that shallow reason may have saved her life. Lev helped Abby infiltrate the theater house and ambush Ellie and her friends. He shot an arrow into Tommy's leg (which got him shot in the head and disabled) and he shot Ellie (pregnant girlfriend) in the shoulder. Lev was a conspirator and an enemy. Abby is lucky that she befriended Lev so that he could remind Ellie about her relationship with Joel. The flashback appears out of nowhere. Ellie has spent the whole game obsessing over revenge and, all of a sudden, she experiences a brief flashback while she's drowning Abby to within an inch of her life _(Spare Abby😇),_ which contradicts the previous flashback _(Kill Abby😠!!!)._ Ellie forced Abby to fight to the death by threatening to kill a child. They had a brutal fight where Abby bit off two of her fingers. There's no way anyone (besides a Saint) could forgive someone in the middle of a fight to the death. Ellie ain't no saint. There was no setup for Ellie's to spare Abby. The writers never show how she grows. There's no reflection, introspection, remorse or regret. She doesn't gain any perspective that allows her to 'forgive' Abby. Magical flashback? Sorry, but the ending was completely incongruous with the storytelling momentum and themes of revenge. The 'forgiveness' was shoehorned with a cheesy, biblical plot twist. Ellie's character turn was so sudden that it gave fans whiplash. The ending was so bipolar and unexpected that it needs medication. It was poorly executed (pun intended).😉

@@sunnysied713 @Sunny Sied alright the stuff about the resumed revenge quest being inconvenient, sure, makes sense, but they had to add the Santa Barbara section to properly conclude Ellie's arc. The game's central theme is cycles of violence, Abby broke the cycle on her part when she let Dina and Ellie live despite losing 3 of her closest friends in less than 24 hours. Ellie never got to conclude her arc, she never had the upper hand in that fight, and there's no way she could have against abby, so they starved her. They couldn't have let Abby die by Ellie's hand, it would've made the entire Abby playable section pointless. So they chose to conclude Ellie similarly and have her gain the upper hand in a fight and spare Abby, this was their best option. And the three reasons I said made her spare Abby are at least something they tried to justify her sparing Abby. They could've easily just had her spare Abby without any reason or explanation but they did their best with what they could do. When your two main protagonists of a game are mortal enemies, you're gonna have some problems with concluding the game while keeping both of them in mind. And your point about Lev is somewhat convincing but he's literally a child and Ellie sees him that way too. She says "you made him a part of this", she knows Lev only shot Tommy and Dina because of Abby, that doesn't stop her from seeing herself reflected in him. And how would they even set up Ellie on a "forgiveness arc", and if they did, then there should've never been a round two of Ellie vs Abby. The only reason they had them fight again, was to have Ellie break the cycle on her own terms(and it's important because that's the central theme). Ellie can not forgive Abby, i don't know what kind of forgiveness arc you can write to do so, a bunch of cutscenes of Dina trying to talk her out of it? So since she can't forgive her, the only way to break the cycle is by having her spare Abby in a fight, you might think that her flashback of a living Joel is "magical", but it's the best they could've done to justify her sparing Abby. And again, if Abby dies, half the game becomes pointless. I know its not executed in the best way. But there isn't really much room for a perfect conclusion here. And it's not that it was lazy, it's just that they didn't have many options.

@@sunnysied713 You've clearly never been truly conflicted with your morality or felt a lack of closure in your life. If you have, it's even more baffling that you don't understand why everything that happens in the game is a truly realistic depiction of what these emotional conflicts can cause a person to do. I could explain it, but you're going to try and use logic and reason and those things do not go hand-in-hand with emotional distress. Either you get it and relate to the conflicts in the story, or you don't. Maybe in a few years you'll come back to this game and appreciate the story more.

PNCLL TV thanks.I just think there’s enough hate and toxicity as it is, there’s really no need to spread more. I understand that people are passionate about these characters and this world and waited a long time for a sequel they felt was disappointing, myself included, but I think rather than dwelling on something you felt was disappointing or you didn’t like you should just move on and focus on things you do like and show those things love and support rather than spreading unnecessary hate and toxicity to something you don’t like. That’s always been my mindset. I’m really glad you enjoyed the game and found enjoyment in it where I didn’t, I’m so glad this game has meant so much to so many and it really makes the hard work of the whole team who worked so hard to get it out worth it. I think it’s pathetic that some horrible people can’t just let people enjoy something just because they don’t feel the same, so I’m sorry to you too if you’ve faced any harassment or toxicity for your enjoyment of the game. It’s so uncalled for and it’s a shame that I’ve seen a lot of it across the Internet, again I stress, I promise we’re not all like that :)

I’ve had amazing conversations with friends that hated the game and we all came out of it better than we entered because when you’re open to understand that we’re all the same but different, that’s how shit is supposed to go down. My wife got me the collectors edition of this game for my birthday. Then it got delayed twice... The second delay of Last of Us Part 2 ended up being moved to June 19. I felt so bad because that was the day before mine and my wife's wedding anniversary. My wife, being the sweetheart she is, insisted that I play it. The part where Joel sings Pearl Jam's Future Days to Ellie, made me and my wife begin to sob. It was a touching moment for many people. What had made it so touching to me and her, was more than just a moment between two characters. It was the song that my wife used to walk down to the altar to, the day of our wedding. For that moment, we felt like that part was written for us (I know that sounded conceded).

I don't know if you're actually going tl read this, but this game made me cry at one especific part: the moment where Ellie and Dina are living together. That scene alone give me hope and reminded me the power of a family. Family that you choose, not family that share your blood. I am a son of a single mother in Brazil, raised in a favela, having to choose between having launch or dinner, and quite sometime, none of them. I always had this inner rage against people of more wealth than I, which led me to lose people in my life because of this rage, that blinded me, and this game showed me that there's more in life than that. Now I'm trying to composd some songs about it, and dream to one day be able to travel to US to thank you Troy Baker, Neil, Ashley for this, also Nolan North for Drake. I love gaming and someday maybe I'll work at Naughty Dog, hey, I can dream right haha. Thank you Thank you so much for existing man, you guys made me a better person!

@@troybaker So, I'm from Brazil, son of a single mother, raised in a favela, in a house of 2 bedrooms for 5 women and myself, my father was and still is an absent guy who likes to give speeches but do not like to listen. Well, my mom always made the best she could for myself, and for 6 years, the best she could do was keep trying to find a job, because she was the primarly provider of the house. So she had small jobs like cleaning houses of rich people, literally laying down on the floor the clean everyone elses mess, being mistreated for being black, woman and unemployed. We had to choose to have breakfast or dinner a lot of times, and sometimes she even gave her's to me, because I was just a little kid who knew nothing. She always inspired me to found hope and be thankful, and to love art. Well, eventually she founded a job, a job that she still doing to this day, I'm 23 years old now, studying in my second graduation, which is Acoustic Engineering, my first graduation was at Music Production What I said about the hate that I've felt in my life and still do, is because in a certain way, I tended myself to see other people as bigger, or more important, or better at everything than I, and that I was never capable of nothing, because I've had this life of privation and lack of possibilities. So when I played The Last of Us part 2 and I saw Ellie losing everything because of her hate, and Abby losing to, and Joel being killed because of it, something clicked. I did not want to kill someone's Joel because of my hate, I just want to share love and peace, and this cicle to end. After this game, I came to realise that what I really wanted all along, is to give people the opportunities to have what I could not until this point, and for that, I'm so, so thankful Okay, I said a lot, and maybe you're not going to read it, but man, I love you so much, for your work, for defending what you believe, for spreading love. And as I said it in KZread, maybe someday I can travel to US, work at naughty dog, meet you and say "Thank You" personally. Videogames taught a lot of things that changed my life!

I totally respect anyone who did not like the game, or was disappointed with the story. We all have our own opinion. And many make good point as to why they didn't like it. However the "backlash" comes mostly from mindless haters who didn't even finish the game, got stuck on one particular scene and refused to give a chance to the rest of it, and formed opinions of what they heard, or of watching streamers play a fraction of it. TLOU2 is something you have to take in its entirety. And you have to experience it personally. Anyway.

Great art isn’t always appreciated by everyone. A striking example is Dylan “going Electric”. He received a lot of pushback from his fans, one famously calling him “Judas!”, yet his electric albums throughout the ‘60s are considered masterpieces. And so it goes with TLOU2, a game that challenges, inspires, provokes, elicits thoughts and feelings, and changes your perspective on what the medium is capable of producing the way great art should. Thank you Troy, Neil, Ashley, Laura and the rest of Naughty Dog for NOT creating safe, crowd-pleasing entertainment, but for taking the far more difficult, far more risky path - the one that trailblazers throughout art & history have taken. I do not usually like commenting on any social media due to the fact that in my mind it seems it does not make much of a difference what I can say about any given topic, but recently I have come to understand that to create beaches we must gather every bit of sand. I wanted to tell you a bit of my personal experience whilst playing TLof2 with the sole purpose as to thank, praise, support, and encourage every last one of the members of the team that created this game and of course the previous one. I was ok, as much as someone who loves the character can be, with Joel's death, because I understood how the world in TLoU works and, as Neil puts it, death is not a punishment nor life a reward. I had learned this from GoT already (haha), and most importanly from life itself. As a matter of fact, that is what makes this world believable to me; tragedy and senseless things can come to anybody at anytime because that is what happens in the real world. I was never thinking you should be "doing right by" anyone but yourselves, and what you wanted to show us through this art form. However, about halfway through my playthough I was wrestling with the idea of playing as Abby on the one hand (for obvious reasons), and on the other, the fact that I wanted to know how the story was going to culminate. Also I was enjoying very much the immersive and fantastic time I was having with the actual gameplay and mechanics. The struggle was so, I even stopped playing when I thought I had to kill Ellie at the theatre. Actually, my first reaction was to literally let Ellie kill Abby; just threw myself at her to be done with it. After I pushed through those feelings of rage, I managed to keep going, and boy it was worth it.To me it was tragically beautiful seeing all that Ellie had to go through and lose, and still keep some humanity inside. For me it was super reediming that even after hitting rock bottom she did not do what Abby did to her. She could stop at some point. On my first playthough I also did not connect with some characters as I saw them as the enemy, as those who killed Joel and deserved to die. By playing it again, I could see things from their perspective, from what they wanted and needed.. And could understand much better what the game was trying to communicate. At the end I think I had to put my ego aside and love the story for what it was, and for what it was trying to teach and tell me, rather than for what I wanted it to be. We all love a good ol' happy ending, but that is not what we always get in different stages in life. And it is precisely this, which I believe is so hard for many people to come to terms with and why some people have mixed feelings about the game or come to even hate it. For me personally, it was trully a masterpiece. Thank you for making it happen and looking forward to more of your art.

I finished the game little more than a week ago, and I have not been able to stop thinking about it. I finished the first game right before the I played Part 2, but I was immediately hooked into the story, and the bond between Ellie and Joel. I never really had a father figure growing up and was amazed about how in just a short time, I was able to feel such a connection to his character. And Ellie, wow, I feel like I’m just like her in some ways. When I read about what you said about Joel’s death in the game, it resonated with me. Looking back, I think I cried more in the “wake and funeral” part where Ellie is walking through Joel’s home than when he actually died. Like Neil said in the last of us podcast, which you should listen to, is that they all wanted you to feel the dread when he was being killed, and the aftermath of it was where the sadness kicked in for me. I just deeply felt what Ellie was feeling. I have felt loss a couple of times in my life, and although the circumstances of Joel’s death were so extreme, I was ok with it, as you were, and accepted it. I’ve been deeply troubled with some people’s criticisms of this game on the internet, and I never really could figure out why it was bothering me so much. I’d see these rants people were having online about the story being dogshit, and it would get me so annoyed! Troubled enough to write a long paragraph defending the game. To dismiss the whole entirety of the game as bad storytelling just felt so incredibly stupid. And watching this I realized, fuck the haters! Naughty Dogs work is so amazing and has the level of detail I’ve always wanted from other games but never got. With that said, I feel like most people who are angered about the game probably don’t know the in-depth detail about how this game was made, and in my opinion, seem too uneducated about it to get angry at. The creators, not just Troy and Neil, seem to have considered every detail about the story and I think people are not giving them enough credit. The point is I never realized why those criticisms bothered me so much and reading your comment made me figure it out somewhat. You expressed a level of maturity and understanding that I haven’t seen from many angry fans. I found myself saying back to those people, “it’s not a black and white story! There’s no good guy or bad guy! Abbys no better than Ellie and vice versa! Not everyone would kill their enemy!” Just the many arguments I was trying to settle, and getting deeply concerned when nobody seemed to understand. So many people were focused on what they thought should have happened. I had accepted the game for what it was and I hoped people would have done the same. I eventually had to accept that some people just didn’t like the game. Or that they simply don’t have the maturity to understand the real points and ideas of the story. Anyway, I really just want to express how grateful I am that there are people like you that respect an incredible game like this enough to keep playing it, even when it sometimes gets frustrating to play. I hated fighting Ellie as Abby too. I have heard that some people stopped playing the game all together after certain parts. So thanks for playing it to the end. Imagine if you didn’t! Lol

@@breyannarollins9120 Sorry it took me a while to answer, but I reallly wanted to take my time to share my thoughts on your comment and not rush it as I 110% agree with your sentiment. Not only that, I feel exactly the same way you do towards some of the unfair, and rash criticism this game got initially. I was fortunate not to be spoiled by the leaks that happened prior to launch and that is why I think I got to experience what all the team intended with all that happend throughout the game. In my opinion, some people boarded the hate and bully wagon too early and jumped to conclusions without even playing the game first, which I believe is totally unfair to the community and everyone who was involved in it. What troubled me most was hearing friends whose opinions I respect, trash the game for things that were untrue such as the misinformation about the gender of some characters forced upon the story to drive a point. To me some of the criticism and argument revolving the game is trully fascinating and valid, and I respect whoever does not like it or has a different view of the events that were portrayed. The discussion regarding Tommy and Joel's trusting Abby and their crew for example is something I disagree with but can totally understand. All this was also an exercise in empathy in itself. I don't think it is fair to go "fuck the haters" in the same way I don't think it is fair they go "fuck the game". You need to try and see it the way they do to be able to understand their frustration. In a way, I am not happy about what hapened to our beloved characters, but that does not mean that I don't LOVE the story, if that makes sense. The reason I think it is amazing is that no game had me trying to overcome obstacles that go beyond the mere gameplay. I heard this from another youtuber and I resonated so much with it. No amount of skill with the controler helped to deal with the fact that, at the time, I just wanted Ellie to exact her "just" revenge. No game had had me thinking about why they wanted to present the story in this way, and only by thinking about Abby's motivation and self journey was I able to understand the parallelism between them. I could figure out that they were not shown as intrinsically good or bad. They were just people torn by circumstance grieving and coping as best they could, even when that cost them their friends, relationships and mental health. That is to me the genious nature of the game, and the power behind the acting... It made me FEEL, and it made me think and analyze way beyond the story it presented. Thank you Bree for sharing your own thoughts. I found them so interesting and by answering I know we are growing by talking about something we are really passionate about.

It's hard to believe that they care when it's apparent that the characters shift everything just to serve the plot. And the plot is an attempt to see how much they can destroy everything you cared about in the first game. Except the graphics, maybe. Edit: and this is justified as being their vision. But just because they have a vision doesn't mean a story with unlikable characters and an unsatisfying conclusion is good. I guess I commend their ability to torture an audience for thirty hours. Giving you breaks by showing off the relationship you actually wanted explored, Joel and Ellie. It subverted all hopes of a cohesive and satisfying experience just to make a statement that could have been annunciated in a clause or two. Revenge is bad, unless you're Abby.

I loved The Last of Us Part 2, it didn't disappoint me at all. I struggle to think of any game that has had such an emotional impact on me like these two games have had. I had tears in my eyes a few times playing this game, the feeling of loss and losing someone was spot on in this game. The scene when Ellie plays the guitar in the theatre, just a few notes that Joel had played to her and then she stops. She rests her head on the guitar and looks so sad, it's just so incredibly well done. We can see by the look of her face that she's really missing Joel, she then thinks back to her birthday at the museum, that whole section is probably my favourite part of the game. The games been on my mind quite a bit since I finished it. Pretty much every aspect of this game is just jaw dropping. How I went from hating Abbey to really caring about her by the end was just brilliant storytelling. It wouldn't have worked without those excellent performances by the cast. Large part of Ellie's motivation is her anger at herself for making Joel suffer by cutting him off for nearly 2 years. Abby took her revenge on this 'monster' Joel, but all she killed was an old man. And that act of vengeance did nothing to her. She still kept on suffering and seeing her dead father in her dreams. Only when finally doing something good and selfless does she start to heal. Like Abby, Ellie can't let her father figure's killer go and she goes back to find her even at the cost of all her relationships. When she finds Abby tortured and on the verge of death, yet still taking care of Lev, she can recognise the relationship as very similar to the relationship between her and Joel. Which makes her doubt the justification of killing Abby (Lev's sole provider), but she still suffers too much to let it go and arguably turns villainous for a moment when she threatens Lev's life to get Abby to fight her. At this point Abby has given up on revenge (despite Ellie and Tommy having killed her friends). This time Ellie is at a physical advantage due to Abby's state. When she is about to kill Abby, Ellie again gets a flashback of Joel. But this time it's something different. She recalls that she DID in a messy way, let Joel back in on that last night at Joel's porch. Joel died knowing she loves him. And maybe that's enough. So, killing Abby. Would she really make Lev suffer the same way she had suffered? For what purpose? She also realized what Abby realized right after killing Joel. That it would mean nothing to her. All she would have done is destroy Lev's life, and maybe one day he would come after her to enact revenge. And would JJ then do the same? When would the cycle of violence end?

Appreciate this discussion a lot. Something that bums me out is that I’m sad the discourse surrounding the game has become so toxic. I love the game, but always put a lot of value in seeing other perspectives and seeing why things didn’t work as well for others and that’s been hard to parse here at times. Any genuine criticisms get drowned out by those just screaming racial or homophobic epithets and we lose the ability to have nuanced, interesting discussions about the game with people we disagree with. The fact that people can spend hours dissecting the story, characters, themes, etc of this game is what I love so much about it, yet those discussions so frequently devolve into people yelling at one another. It’s a game I haven’t been able to stop thinking about in the time since finishing it and I’m grateful for everyone who poured their heart and soul into creating such an incredible experience.

I loved the emotional nuances and grace notes in The Last of Us Part 2 that were often overlooked by the games harshest critics. The scene where Ellie was in the space capsule at the museum with Joel or the porch scene between the same characters will be difficult for me to forget.

  • @sunnysied713

    @sunnysied713

    4 жыл бұрын

Most of the emotional scenes were cheaply earned. The flashback scenes were great, but they totally relied on the original game and nostalgia/bonds that people had from the first game. There's no room for GRACE in the Last of Us universe. Ellie forgave/pardoned/showed mercy to Abby at the last possible second because of grace (a magical one second flashback to spare, which contradicted the first flashback to kill). Naughty Dog gave us a cheesey, poetic, biblical ending (grace???) for characters who exist in a kill-or-be-killed, do-or-die apocalyptic hellscape. They were striving for a realistic, survivor story with gray morality (no heroes, no villains, everyone is awful) and they employed a cliché (poorly setup) grace forgiveness _trope_ to spare Abby. It's very incongruent with the major themes of the game.

  • @sij748

  • @sunnysied713

    @sunnysied713

    4 жыл бұрын

@@sij748 Joel's redemption arc had much more setup than Ellie's. The giraffe scene was symbolic of how the dark clouds had parted and they had grown together to become friends. The whole game supported their character development and gradual friendship. Ellie's forgiveness had almost zero setup. There was one flashback that reminded her to kill Abby (PRIMARY objective for the whole game). Then another flashback came along and made her character perform a sudden 180-degree turn. It was unbelievable. Ellie didn't grow as a character. There was no reflection, introspection, remorse or regret that justified her release of Abby. Ellie didn't grow and Abby didn't earn 'forgiveness'. THIS kind of grace doesn't exist in the Last of Us world. You can argue that the Farm scene was like grace because Ellie received a much-too-perfect 'happy ending' that felt like an out-of-place dream sequence. She had her loving and supportive partner (Dina), healthy and adorable baby boy (J.J.) and a bucolic farm in some idylic and peaceful countryside location. Ellie won the lottery, but she took that _grace_ (good luck, fortune, blessing) and thew it all away. No one can honestly believe that Ellie would forgive Abby. She abandoned her family in the zombie apocalypse, traveled 1,044 miles to Santa Barbara, killed many more people, threatened to kill a child to force a fight to the death, battled until they were bloody, Abby bit off her two fingers, Ellie drowns her to an inch of her life and GRACE somehow magically appears??? There's no way anybody forgives that quickly in such an intense battle with their most hated enemy. Abby did nothing to earn forgiveness. And Ellie didn't grow as a character to forgive. The grace is undeserved and unbelievable.

The reason why people criticize this game is the characters are killed or ruined to serve the message that psychopathic revenge is bad, despite the fact that the characters we know would have behaved in a much different manner, and that the person they're pushing you to like, Abby, is immune to the only message the damn plot can make. And the part where they try to justify torturing and killing off one of the main reasons you waited for this game, by giving you ten hours of someone you don't know, and likely will never care about. Joel and Ellie are given one hour of screentime just so I know that a writer can subvert my expectations and kill off the franchise in a really dissatisfying manner. But they designed it that way, so I'm sorry, I was wrong. I forgot that anything that's planned is good.

Also notice how her fingers seemed to have healed, somewhat. ALSO notice how she was wearing completely different clothes. With all this info I believe that she returned to Jackson along with the others, and in the final scene she was just going to bring back the guitar, but in order for her to let Joel go, she decides to leave the guitar behind. The message of the game is that revenge is bad. But it only applies to the characters you care about. And the characters you care about act in ways that are not indicative of what we have grown to know them as. So if you like stories designed to use your emotions to service a cheap "don't be a psychopath" message. I guess that's your decision. But it in no way compares to works of tragedy such as Hamlet or Romeo and Juliet, that say much more about the human experience than we could ever hope to gather from the summation of this forced torture experiment.

@@SPECTER0459 The hatred that Ellie feels for Abby is an externalized reflection of the hatred Ellie harbors for herself. Why? Well Joel deeply hurt both Abby and Ellie in different ways and they both punished him for it. Ellie hates Abby for torturing Joel to death, especially because she didn't get a chance to restore her relationship with Joel. This is a mirror because Ellie also tortured Joel, she did it for years but in a different way, and I'd say in a way that was more painful for Joel, and that was by disconnecting from him. She hates herself for torturing him like that and not restoring their relationship when there was still time. That's the real pain she has been trying to avoid facing during this entire revenge quest, she's like a drug addict using revenge to avoid dealing with those painful feelings of regret/self hate. This is the realization she has while she is drowning Abby when she has the flashback to the scene on the porch with Joel and chooses to spare Abby. She's not just forgiving Abby, she's really most importantly forgiving herself and finally coming to terms with what happened between her and Joel, her leaving his guitar to rest in the house and walking away is supposed to symbolically represent that she has forgiven Joel, made peace with what happened between them and is finally ready to move on and start a new life. Saying the game is just about "revenge is bad" is the most surface level takeaway.

I loved the games, and though I don't completely love all the story choices that were made for pt. 2, I do respect them. It took a lot of bravery to not rinse and repeat the first game. Secondly, I just want to say that I think it's great that Neil speaks about the Developers and how hard they worked. I'm a Scrum Master (a work methodology coach for dev teams), and though I've only worked on a couple of projects that were laughably smaller than this game I do have some understanding about how much effort the devs (and of course everyone involved in the project) put into it. This game is judged a LOT based on story decisions and it seems like the absolutely stunning graphics, sound design, set pieces, and amazingly solid/fun gameplay get ignored or put to the side in discussions. So, I just want to give a special shoutout to all the developers and artists and people that worked "behind the scenes" to make this game so much fun to actually look at, play and experience. You're all the elites of the gaming industry in my opinion.

The best character development and most powerful storytelling I've seen since Breaking Bad (my fave show of all time) my jaw dropped a million times, my heart nearly bet out of my cheast, I gasped out loud literally about 15 times, just when I thought my mind was blown to infinity, this absolute masterpiece just got better and better and better until that porch scene left me speechless! No comment can ever express how much I adored every second of this experience so Imma stop here! Thank you so much Troy, Ashley, Neil, Laura, Halley and everyone at Naughty Dog for making such a magnum opus! ❤❤❤ and for creating Joel and Ellie, two of my fave characters in all of fiction! 😊 Playthrough no. 6 here I come!! 🤠

Well I'm obviously way late, but I just want to thank the both of you, as well as Ashley, Laura, and the entire team at Naughty Dog for such an incredible and memorable story in The Last of Us 2. I'm on my fourth playthrough and find that it's still the most moving experience I've had with a controller in my hands. I still find myself lying awake some nights and mulling it all over. Also, I've never been so adamant about defending a game from bad faith detractors before. I spend maybe *too* much time arguing with people who played the game with a closed mind, but I couldn't feel more justified in my love for the game.

I personally don’t like the direction the story went in Part II, because all my characters ended up worse off. Broken or dead. However, I can definitely still appreciate the thing as a whole, and the acting and direction never faltered. Troy, Ashley, and Neil obviously care so deeply about this world, so my opinions about the narrative don’t ruin the experience for me, because I can tell it didn’t go that way because of negligence, every creative decision feels agonized over, it’s not taken lightly.

i havent finished the game yet but I find it to be an interesting irony in terms of death, a lot of people were expecting Joel to get the hero's death treatment, but to see him die the same way as practically everyone else he's killed or has died, his death wasn't romanticized which i thought was a good change

I was one of the people that when I heard about the leaks, instantly setup filters to block any news about TLOU Part 2, and punched in so many diffrent TLOU keywords on twitter to block Just finished the game this Saturday, I only played in the weekends, because I did not want it to end. By being completely in the dark I got all the surprises in the game and in the correct context, and had such an amazing time with the game I was beyond floored by this game and the story, the whole team at ND which includes the cast has done such an amazing job, it even got me thinking about picking up an Guitar even though I can't play :) I can see why the game has taken this long to make with blood, sweat and tears. By being in the dark about everything ND and TLOU Part 2 related untill now also meant I did not knew about the Backlash at Laura Bailey, so hearing about it here first, and then starting to read about it all makes me both angry and sad. The internet can be really cruel, but her Character ended up being one of my new favorites to the TLOU world. and the whole journey she has been through, such an amazing role, and performance! First I was angry at her, the Character not Laura, and then by the end of the game I really felt for her, and was so glad I didn't have to go through with it to be fair, I also thought that would have been a too "easy" resolution to it all so I am really happy for the ending we got. Oh and this Interview or talk with Neil Druckmann is one of the most down to earth, honest and real interviews I have heard for a long time. the subjects you talked about realyy surprised me. I could just sit and hear you two talk for hours :) Would love to hear your talk with other people from the team, perhaps even someone you don't see in interviews so much. Perhaps with The Amazing Gustavo Santaolalla, now that you are both Musicians, would love to hear about his thought process about the music in the game, and your thoughts about it. I still am crossing my fingers for a Secret Doc about the game process like the people from Area5 did with the first game that we just haven't heard about yet. hearing how Grounded was not suppose to be a doc from the start was pretty interesting. Congrats with the new Channel here Troy, I can't wait to see what you will talk about next.

I finished the game yesterday. It was emotionally the hardest, meanest, toughest experience in my 36+ gaming life. If you contemplate the game after finishing it, it means it was exceptional. So soul tearing, so ambivalent. So special. There were many comparisons but the closest one for me is: "Apocalypse Now" of gaming, and being compared to Francis Ford Coppola is the best thing anyone could hear. 10/10. I'm sending my thanks and respects from Poland. P.S. Thank you Neil for that little WWII note found in the synagogue...

For me, this game was a master class in perspective-taking. I’m a marriage and family therapist, and I can tell you that taking a perspective that you would not naturally be inclined to take, let alone completely immerse yourself in, is probably the single most difficult task I can ask of a client. Bravo to Naughty Dog for asking this of your players; and THANK YOU all for having faith that (I’d say... at least half of us?) were able to do it and find an unparalleled gaming experience thanks to your brave storytelling choices. And before anyone comments and insults the “other side” of the fanbase (minus the hateful commenters... there is NO EXCUSE for that), I’d like to share my perspective on clients, players in this case, who absolutely *cannot* rise to the task of perspective-taking. They are not stupid; they just have absolute faith in the superiority of their perspective, to the point where it impedes any semblance of effective communication. In some ways, I admire that conviction, but it saddens me that these people are missing so many of the beautiful moments in this game because their hearts are hardened to many of the characters. I’m also seeing a lot over over-intellectualizing going on regarding this game. Now I would normally applaud anyone who puts on their thinking cap, but I think these intellectuals are putting on their thinking caps instead of feeling their feelings. I want to shout, “It’s okay to be angry! It’s okay to love Joel so deeply that you absolutely can’t get behind Abby! Just admit what’s really going on! Please stop insulting the intelligence of the brilliant minds behind the game, and please stop insulting the intelligence of the players who enjoyed the game.” True intellectualism requires curiosity, and that’s what I’m failing to see from those who launch these diatribes. As Daniel Boorstin said, “The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance; it is the illusion of knowledge.” I didn’t play the game knowing any of Naughty Dog’s intentions. But it delights me to know that some of my takeaways turned out to be in line with the intentions of the creative team. Some were perhaps just my own personal takeaways, influenced by my own like experiences. And I think that’s okay, too!!! At any rate, this game has enriched my emotional granularity, it’s helped me professionally, and I’ll carry it in my heart forever. So THANK YOU. 💕

Was a masterpiece until the 2nd half imo... overall I ended on an 8/10. Just that whole batch of characters is so much harder to sympathise with, they could have done better there. All these people just seem farily hostile in nature, with them being soliders. Owen is the most sympathetic by nature. Just with how brutal and sadistic that scene was, it's so hard for the characters to come back from that. And damn...if they pulled it off it would have been incredible, but I don't think they did. It probably would have served the game better to have the POV constantly jumping back and forth rather than paced out like it was as well. Just something about that early scene too, Abbey just comes across as more sadistic like she is enjoying it rather than vengeful, you don't feel the pain of her loss, she just seems like she's enjoying the torture. And then she plays Ramsay Bolton like mind games rather than telling Joel why she is doing what she is doing. What kind of revenge is that if the person doesn't even know who you or what you are punshing them for?

I’d like to share something if I may. I am a Design Strategist and one of our important rules of design is to make things accessible to everyone. When we have the task of constructing a building, it needs to be accessible for everyone including the elderly and disabled people. That means creating ramps, elevators, handlebars, or whatever. So this exact concept can be replicated in games, which TLOU2 has done so exceptionally well. The colorblind mode and ability to find objects easier made the game much better. Customizing the button layout was also an incredible highlight that more games should follow. I think those were really spot on and have allowed more people to enjoy playing video games. I really admire that commitment the team of developers made to ensure it was all programmed together beautifully. Congrats 🎈🎊🍾

5:04 Niel’s answer here may be why the game suffered such strange direction in story and character development....he says he did less than “half of the writing, where he did majority of it on the first game.” They said from the beginning that a lot of people would hate it...and they weren’t wrong. I think they were blindsided by the amount of people who didn’t like it. I played it, watched interviews with Druckman explaining why they made the choices (and even now I’m still watching interviews to try to understand more) and it hasn’t change my opinion towards the game and I really wanted to love it. I went out of my way to give the benefit of the doubt on almost every story and character arc, I really did. It helped me understand why things happened, but it didn’t change my feeling of ...well, “betrayal” sounds too dramatic, but idk how they thought the main choices were good ones. It was bold and I respect them for trying something so bold, but for most people it doesn’t seem to have worked in their favor. You can tell they’re still crestfallen with the response and that’s certainly how I still feel.

What I liked about The Last of Us Part 2 is that it just didn't copy and paste the first game and challenged players a little. It's not what everyone expected, and sure, I'd have liked more Joel and Ellie scenes, but there's some really clever stuff in the writing, especially in regards to the relationship between the player and the character. It reminded me a lot of Metal Gear Solid 2 in that regard. You're not playing as a silent protagonist that you can project onto, you're playing as Ellie/Joel/Abbie, characters with their own set motivations and ideals, that you as the player might not agree with. It's a shame about the leaks, but I did manage to dodge all of them - until someone posted a golf club meme on something, I think that soured a lot of people on it, not knowing the context. Did every single aspect work? No. But trying to do something different rather than just doing it again with nicer graphics is commendable.

it’s so relieving to come across a video about this game to see the comments are so positive and respectful. maybe i didn’t scroll far enough, but this game truly deserves positive acknowledgement. what we were gifted with this game was beyond any game that i’ve ever played before, and what felt like the most important “movie” i could watch. it pulled on my heart strings and left me feeling heavy and cold, but so does life. the realistic dimension this game grasps is captivating and so special, that’s why so many people can relate to it. i ultimately think revenge was the kickstarter of the plot, but it wasn’t the ending focal point. it’s about love and forgiveness, losing yourself but then finding your humanity. truly some of the scariest things we can feel. this game was art and i can’t thank you and every single person at naughty dog enough for this new gained perspective.

After I finished TLoU2, I immediately booted up my copy of TLoU Remastered so I could get the whole story from beginning to end, and I feel like folks for whom TLoU2 didn't sit well should do that if possible The turns the story takes and the themes it tackles can be easily obscured and distorted by nostalgia of the first game if it isn't fresh in your mind I won't say it will 100% change your opinion but I honestly feel like these games are better taken as a cohesive whole than as separate experiences

People who hate the sequel's story have a sugar coated version of the first one's ending mixed with fan fiction and all ("there were other immune people who were killed", lol).

@@juandecarvalho8405 What would a cure do? Most of the deaths are caused by humans killing other humans. Let's say that this random person could create a cure, in the first game, they were shown to be the bad guys. They stop Joel from helping Ellie, they take everything away from him and then tell him to leave which could be a death sentence for Joel, then they go to kill Ellie without her permission. Then how do we know that they will create the cure and not try to use that to gain power? How would they distribute it? This is why a lot of people don't see why the ending of the first game is mixed, even without our connection to Joel and Ellie, you can see that letting them kill Ellie is a bad idea, either from a "they will gain power if a cure is made" or a "they are pricks that were going to kill two people without their consent and on a hope.

@@roadogsc If Joel is completely right and the Fireflies are "the bad guys", the first one's ending has no meaning, Joel wouldn't even need to lie to Ellie. We can understand Joel, but he didn't make his choice out of analysing the scientific or political implications of a cure, he made it because he would rather see the world burn than let Ellie die. Those were the implications that led to the events of the second game, and to me that was clear years ago. Neil Druckman wrote both games, and he wrote a sequel to his story, not the fan fiction people made of it.

@@juandecarvalho8405 I am not saying that Joel thought of any of that at the time. He could just be lying to Ellie because he has yet to look back on the events that led him to that decision. But using hindsight, he could easily see that that was the right choice and then he could explain to Ellie that. It also makes sense using what we know about Joel, he is a logical person and him using emotions is what the whole TLoU1 was building up to, but just because of him using emotions that one time does not mean he stops being logical, and the logical thing to do is to see that he was right and explain that to Ellie if it comes up. Also, you say that that is what leads to the implications of the second game, what about all the other good and bad guys that we killed in just the first game? Are their sons and daughters gonna come after up? Are there millions of revenge plots going on through out the world? The answer is yes. The issue is that it is hard for many people to connect to a revenge plot is a post apocalyptic world because you do what you have to do to survive and having a "killing bad because revenge"/"revenge bad" is hard for me and many other people to connect to because if you think about the theme in this setting, it falls apart. The one argument that I know many people bring up is that Joel destroyed the JWF(i forget, but Abbys group) and ruined Abby's life, but that was a retcon of the second game so it is not a valid argument. (If there is anything you want clarification on just tell me because it is hard to proof read on mobile)

@@roadogsc "The answer is yes". Exactly. How many hunters, military and canibals died in the first game because of the way they lived? If there's one thing history teaches us is that societies that use excessive violence as the way to move things tend to self destruct in some level, this is no different in the post apocaliptic world. The world became a much better place when most nations saw it was better to sit, talk and trade rather them destroy eachother. In both games, we see Jackson - a town that strugle with the world it's set in, but managed to rebuild civilization in a small scale, where people can have normal and happy lives. The WLF and the Seraffites could have been the same but ended up destroying eachother in a pointless war. And that's the point of the second's story: no "revenge is bad" for the sake of it, but to ilustrate the endless destruction caused by violence and how to move away from it. Also, there are no retcons in TLoU 2. When I see people talking about that, they come with misinterpretetions and fan fiction.
