I moved to Mexico about a year ago. I’ve been living in the southern part of the state of Guanajuato & I’m saving for property for retreats that’ll have workshops and experiences as well, so this is very inspiring💗 I definitely recommend Black Americans to move out of the United States, if not forever, at least for a few years. I know it’s difficult but there are so many resources to get you started!

You don't. You just turn a blind eye to your privilege as a US American. It might be that "if it's not white colonization it's okay" for the USers but it's still colonization for us in Latin America. This is not the best path for neither black americans nor costa ricans.

Especially right now a lot of Central American governments have convinced poor predominantly black and indigenous people to sell the government their land ONLY to resell it for a much higher price to rich foreigners who are turning them into resorts and tourist destinations or Airbnb rentals and literally getting rich off this land. You have to make sure the money you make is the minimum to get the digital nomad visa. In Costa Rica is $2.000 a month. But you can work online and every 3 months just get a fly out Costa Rica and back. Alot of people go to Guatemala $150 fly ticket spend night in Guatemala City and go back to Costa Rica the next day. You don't really need the 1 o 2 years digital nomad to live in another country.

I visited Costa Rica for the first time in March. To say it was beautiful and amazing experience would be an understatement. The only problem is that out of all the countries I've ever visited in my life (including those in Europe & Asia), Costa Rica was by far the most expensive country I've traveled to so far. I don't know if this is how it is in general or because of Covid. But I got the feeling that "wow, this would be an amazing country to live in...but I couldn't afford it." But I also acknowledge that I was only there as a tourist and for a limited time. So my first impression of CR being an expensive country was probably not the full or accurate reality for those that actually live there. But one thing about Costa Rica is that it is 100% worth the hype. The biodiversity in that small piece of land is out of this world. 10/10 recommend that everyone visit.

An ex was going to do an internship in San Juan receiving a scholarship when i was still with him, I checked the prices to see if I could go with him. They are insane. I've resigned myself to think it is one of those places I'll never visit, at least I know I can go through most of Latin America where there is immesurable biodiversity too

Costa Rica is expensive in a Tourist Areas yes. But if you want to live there why you chose to live like a tourist. I'm Costa Rica and I know alot of expands live in the the Perez Zeledon Valley or the Mountains around the Valley. The Pacific Ocean is 35 minutes from the valley and if you live in the mountains you will have a sunset ocean view every day. The San Isidro Town you can found almost everything just the imports produceds are expected but why you want to eat for breakfast peanut butter and jelly sandwich is you can have a Gallo Pinto Eggs Sweet Plantains and Orange juice, Coffee. Specialy if you can harvest you own bananas, plantains, oranges, eggs, etc in your back yard.

I lived in Costa Rica for a little bit and I remember thinking it was expensive when I went out shopping. It made me appreciate places in the US like Walmart where you can get decent quality clothes for a cheap price. Then I had to check myself because for things to be so cheap, there's got to be someone that's not getting paid or being underpaid and exploited for their labor. It just depends on where you go. I was a college student at the time, so I had to be really careful about my money.

Building something for us” is a bit of a reach. I experienced so much personal growth and mental peace during the 3 years I spent living abroad, but those of us who are fortunate enough to be able to pick up and leave the US must not delude ourselves into thinking such an action is anything more than a personal liberation. Seeking personal peace is fine, but exodus is wholly impractical for the almost all the 40MIL blacks living in the US. Running away from the work that must be done in the USA to live peacefully amongst ppl who are themselves victims of US imperialism and exploitation seems misguided. Although there is nothing wrong with prioritising yourself, just call a spade a spade. That's not building for us

Whether it be other victims of imperialism and changing their economy to serve tourist from 1st world counties (is there another way to say that I don’t like ranking countries like that). I’ve lived in Costa Rica and started a business and though I felt safe, just because you leave, doesn’t make it perfect. Living as an American abroad is tougher than people think. Just the cost of a “golden visa “ is not attainable for the average person. if you stay as a tourist, leaving every 3 months is costly and time consuming. The USA is on the decline and more black people need to start thinking beyond 2030/2040. If black people as a collective did all that, they'd be so far ahead of the "majority" and able to build whatever and wherever they wanted.

If there's a will, there's a way. Like anything else, you have to figure out how to make it work by your standards, or not. I left the USA for Canada, which has its own problems, even with race. But if Canadian problems are at 100, American problems are 100 million. And yes, many of my privileges here come from being recognized as an American, but that is measurably better than having almost none of those privileges being exactly the same person south of the border. If you live in a western country, your waking up everyday is exploiting someone somewhere. Figure out how to do your best with the least harm, and live where you feel respected and trusted for what you bring to the world's table. Expatriating is not easy, but in my experience, living with American foolishness (whether the politics or the citizens themselves) is even more difficult. People everywhere leave their homelands for a better life. Why are we stuck thinking that we can't do better than the USA when obviously we can? (And just because "not everyone can afford to leave", this is not a reason to not do better for yourself personally. Lots of people can't afford school, or computers or homes: not a good reason to deny yourself these things.)

Mexico is not the BEST place to live outside of the US. Its definitely SAFER than living in the US (as far as ease of mind). I personally would not live in Mexico unless I had friends who lived in Non-touristy and non-expat centered communities. I lived in Mexico with my Mexican husband for years (2000-2008). It was definitely safer for me. I remember the first place I lived in Mexico was a small town of maybe 2000 families, maybe. The first day there I was unpacking and this old lady carrying a whole bunch of groceries stopped, dropped her groceries and started at me for a good 60 seconds. lol. I was like ma'am can I help you? lol. Mexico suffers from a lot of what people of color suffer from and that is colorism. COLORISM is the biggest issue that I have with Mexico. Yeah, you have your American passport privilege but if you are lighter skinned you will go farther. I had someone tell me that at least I wasn't as dark as an African in Mexico. So yeah there's that.

I wish them the very best. I hope they save for retirement and look into disability insurance just in case someone falls ill. It’s so easy when your young and healthy to jump up and move. As the years go by an aging person’s needs change. Maybe look into paying into Social Security so that when the Golden Years come poverty won’t be the reality. 👍 Good luck to you both!

Unfortunately social security is not promised to any of us. I’m 41 and I realize that it might not be around. Also unless they renounce their citizenship, which is hard as heck to do, they are stilled taxed. I have a 22 month old and I am planning on leaving in 4-5 years. I hopefully will have dual citizenship but I will be keeping my US citizenship for my son. I plan on traveling with him starting next summer to figure out a place but I do have one in mind. I’ve lived and travel overseas and the healthcare was better and so was schooling. Racism and prejudice is everywhere but in the US it’s lethal. And I have a son.

I spoke on this a while ago. I totally agree with what you are saying. I wanted to leave honestly. And after really thinking deeply about it, I felt like why should they win and get our land? Alot of us are indigenous to this land and we are leaving it to take over other lands instead of fighting for our land. It's a difficult inner battle for me between wanting to leave and fighting for my ancestors who fought for me.

There are a lot of safety issues across different African countries in addition to the access to areas that have the infrastructure required to run these types of businesses where you aren't priced out. Africa has some beautiful places where these types of venues would thrive but they'd be exceptionally expensive. Seychelles for example. And other nations have strict visa policies against American/foreign investment and the buying up of land unless it's over a certain amount.

@nappyheadedjojoba Thank you, Ti. I really appreciate you using your platform to facilitate black liberation. I would say that many of us simply can’t leave our lives in America. I’m a full time physician who needs to continue to work. I’d have to obtain a license elsewhere (which may mean taking additional exams and completing clerkships abroad), only to make less money than I do in America. All of this on top of cultural considerations? How is leaving feasible?

Right?! 😬 How do we leave, and go live in THEIR countries... w/out turning into the very thing we hate about living here?! I mean, we know for a fact that the gov't is coercing poor farmers into selling their lands for pennies on the dollar, just so the gov't can then turn around & resell it for profit, to rich tourists & expats. To us, it looks like "a steal", and that's because... it IS. 😕 Any savings we might obtain by moving there, COST poor families somewhere something, I promise you! So it's a complex issue to be sure. 😞

andreacarolina221 yes, I forgot to mention it was right before the world locked down (literally, I left March 21st, 2020). When the restrictions were at their peak, Colombian people, particularly the most disenfranchised, were suffering like crazy. Many of them didn’t have money to buy any food for several days at a time (especially given that it’s a country that heavily relies on tourism), the healthcare system is trash too. And now, their vaccine roll outs are very slow. If you do go to Colombia now, be mindful that more people will try to sell you everything and anything, still be respectful and understanding because they are being so adamant because their livelihood and that of their kids is depending on it. Even if you yourself are vaccinated, still respect health and safety measures and wear a mask to protect those around you. Like Andrea said, there are series of protests that sometimes get violent going on right now, so be careful.
