LET'S EXPLORE SPANISH SUPERMARKETS! I explore supermarkets and I'm amazed at the quality and choice.

I visit three supermarkets in and around Malaga, and I'm surprised at the quality and choice of produce available.

Oh I love a Spanish supermarket. I remember buying 'Loch Castle' whisky when I was a student there, I think they just put two Scottish words together and hoped for the best. Great to see, cheers Scott! Times when you wish you had an empty suitcase eh?

Scott, I thought I was the only weird person who loved going through foreign supermarkets! The fresh fruit and veg are superb and they do love their cheese here, don't they? Once I was thrilled to find Milo ( a chocolate bedtime drink) in a shop in New Zealand - I hadn't tasted Milo since the 1950's!

As a retired supermarket worker, it's interesting to see the prices in Europe, some very different to the UK. On a different note, a while ago you did a video of the Ben Nevis North Face walk. Well, inspired by you, I finally managed the walk to the CIC hut and back. A brilliant walk, so glad I saw your video, Thank you for the inspiration.

European supermarkets often seem much cheaper than mine in Northeast US (a very expensive area), but this one, not as much. Except olive oil! Holy cow, it's about 1/2 price there; of course it's local. And baked goods in Europe seem practically free.

I was told that food prices are very cheap in Spain, not really! But then again, Malaga is a tourist place so they can put whatever price they want according to the amount of people visiting. Here where I live in Austria, people are complaining about the prices but I saw several items you showed in Spain that were more expensive than here!

I think in Spain you need to shop around. There are some wonderful products, like Cabra and Iberico, but a lot of products which are very competitive in the YUK, like yoghurt, are dominated by multinationals. Choice is constrained and prices high. Things like babybel cheese and Hagen Daz I have always found very expensive in Spain. The fresh produce is often better quality, and even convenience cook chill produce is often interesting. But direct comparison with YUK is not easy. We import a lot of produce, so we have to put up with supply chain delays. And prices are low for some things ( pineapples are £1 each in the YUK, not sold by the kilo ), so its only to be expected that producers will sell higher quality merch in places they fetch the highest price.

Hi from a Spaniard! Just a couple of comments! First, the prices you are showing here, are cheap almost the half, in comparison with the prices on Madrid, especially the tomatoes and remaining fruits. Second comment, it's a bit funny for me to see the selection of aliments you choose, they are not a typical mediterrean diet 😂

I had a host when I studied abroad in Madrid in 2022. Thus, I'd mostly get snacks at the alimentaciones, or independent corner stores. However, I did go into the store across from the main campus of the university (at Arguelles), A type of Carefour I beleive. A lot nicer than any American store I've seen (although Wegmans, which is based out of New York but are all over the Mid-Atlantic now, is close on the aesthetic quality). Being in the city, it had a basement where most things were-they had the deli, hot bar, and I think alcohol at street level and most everything else downstairs...but there was a refrigerated wall upstairs near the checkstands/tills. I also went into the Sol and Callao Corte Ingles stores and lived near the flagship store in Nuevos Ministerios (I would pass it to take the train down to Parque Warner twice, all the way to Aranjuez once, and then returning from Parque Europa in Terrjon via the Recoltes tunnel because I decided to cut class because getting back to Torrejon took a lot longer than expected. Only one of maybe 2 or 3 times I missed/cut a class in my college years for the sake of it (other time was I hated the teacher I had when I took Comp for the first time. One day, I picked my battles because I felt a little iffy, but I may have legit cut. I also almost missed a class because my alarm didn't work in J-term, but we still had virtual option, so problem evaded). This does not include times where I was legit sick and took a whole day off from class or optional class on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving (many teachers don't like that they only give us Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Black Friday in the fall term)

I think you are going to be in for a shock when you get to Australia and see how expensive things are in our supermarkets. Alcohol is at least double if not triple in price, and a lot of that has to do with alcohol taxes, which are higher than in the UK. But you won't notice that because in m9st states supermarkets are not allowed to sell alcohol.
