Guys just my observation if your wanting to build a perfect boat with no imperfections your going to keep.chasing small imperfections. I have alot of respect for you two , but its going to take yrs for the boat to hit the water. If thats your goal you have a long way to go. My opinion is dont sweat the small issues, and if you ever go the sell that boat no one will pay the amount.you know you put your heart into.

As many have already said you’re probably taking this whole perfection thing to the extreme. A wise person once said don’t let the perfect stop the good. Surely you want to be out sailing

I find a grease pencil works great for marking and it won’t bleed through subsequent layers like sharpie does.

Yep... 3 months from now we'll see the "Sharpie Marks Bleeding Through" episode. LOL

Perfection can only go so far before you begin adding risk to the long-term product. By this I mean, really … doesn’t numerous overlays to round something off a millimeter open the finish to ‘potential’ cracks and challenges if it doesn’t get “perfectly” prepped? Every layer you sand and add more, although adding strength, can hide bubbles you don’t see, creating cracks and voids in latter years. I’ve always believed in the phrase, “choose your battles wisely” and “don’t ignite a fire where you don’t have a spark”. Everything looks lovely as it is. Call it good, especially if it’s “hard to tell”.

Nice to see you cutting out a few of the windows. Now cover them, get your doors on, and get out of that tent.

the amount of filling and sanding is insane, you could have two boats with non show room finish allready build instead...

But why would we want a boat with a poor finish? It's our home, we have to look at those surfaces every single day.

looks great to me in the pictures. I suggest quit while you are ahead. I have spent hours correcting small defects and the ones I know about look good after the job is done

Yup, that's what the production Max Cruise has done now too. And I think it looks better over the line anyway. But I've now thrown my hands up and admitted defeat - we'll be putting trim up to cover it and window coverings too

@@MJSailingYay! I know it must’ve been a difficult one to walk away from, but I think that’s exactly the right answer. Internal angle panel lines are an absolute SOB to get perfect and they’re something that your eye immediately picks out when you walk into a space. It’s to do with subliminal spatial orientation or something like that. A coarse fabric like hessian works like a charm to disguise any issue. It looks classy and it weighs zip. Why not run a radius just in the shower/head where a fabric won’t work and wipe-down-ability is necessary? Just my thoughts, you’ll do what suits your eye best anyway and that’s exactly as it should be. Cheers, R. 😎👍🍻

@@MJSailing Yup, It’s a separate space that has its own dedicated function and doesn’t look like the rest of the interior anyway, so I think it really doesn’t need to tie in with the rest of the boat in many respects. One other thing that I’ve picked up over the years is vis-a-vis trim panels. To make a really true edge feature, rather than gluing fabric straight onto the fibreglass, cut a sheet of either thin marine plywood or laminate (foam cored, plastic faced sign board weighs absolutely nothing), glue on upholstery foam that’s around 3mm to 5mm thick, then cover with the fabric. Don’t glue the fabric to the foam, wrap it around the edges with a little tension and use contact adhesive on the back face. It makes a slightly soft panel that looks a lot more plush and upmarket. It’s worth doing a couple of test pieces with different foam thickness to see what suits your tastes. Fix the panels up with 3M Dual Lock 3550 or 3551, depending on how far you want the trim panels stood off the surface. It’s the heavy duty stuff that works like velcro but it doesn’t have the fluffy element that never quite works as well the second time you separate it. Neither will ever let go until you want to separate it. I’ve been involved with a few superyacht refits (albeit as an engineer that causes problems for the trim people to hide!😁) and those are couple of details that are commonplace to get around the sort of dilemma you’ve had. Hope some of that helps a little. You two have taken on a heck of a task with the build and you’re making a fantastic job of it. Well done and hats off to you. Cheers, R. 😎👍🍻

You might regret using that sharpie to mark the defects; that sharpie ink bleeds through everything you put on top of it.

I had the same concern. Not sure what the right answer is but I would lean towards a pencil. The pencil lead can largely be wiped away with a quick solvent wipe after you are done with it. I have had bad luck with ink pens under primers and paints.

Sitting on a Max Cruise in Thiland right now and absolutely loving it!! But at the moment I can't tell if I prefer the 92 degrees with high humidity that I'm sitting in, or if I'd rather bundle up for 52, haha.

I think you are the only one who would notice these places. You are moving the scale up to being a perfectionist. But it's your boat and you need to be happy ,but in all honesty it would drive me nuts with the amount of work you still have to do. Have fun !!!!

We have the blessing (curse?) that we've already built one boat and lived aboard. So we know the things that when left unfinished, will drive us crazy. Plus, we've spent 10 years on the water cruising, and we'll be at least 10 more. In the scheme of things, a 4 year boat build within that timeline is not that much, especially if we can end up with a product that we really love.

To each their own. 😉. After having built one boat already, we know of the types of imperfections that will continue to bother us when we're in the water sailing.

Liked and a comment. I am starting to think that I am more excited for that Cat to be in the water on a passage than you are. If my friends were bothered by my nearly perfect corners, they really weren't good friends and I would not miss them, lol. I would need proof that the tiny corner imperfections would bother me in any way, before I invested time like that. We just have vastly different tolerances for imperfection, I guess. If it would bother me greatly, I would have no choice, but to do exactly as you are. Now that I worked that out, there is no need for a comment, but I will leave it, for the algorithms.

The Damn Line" --- Ever consider a piece of flat trim along the line and perhaps a (subtle) color change above and below the line??

What a view out the new window!

Perfection is a relative thing. The first four circles you marked are nothing that needed to be addressed. There is a paddle to apply fairing compound to angles such as those you are working on. It makes the straight line much easier. Look in the Sheetrock department of the big box stores. If they don’t have one get to a Sheetrock tool dept at harbor freight or northern tools. As well you might consider using the metal compound trays to store the compound as your running it. Just some thoughts…

The paddle is 1/2 round and flexible so it will conform to the two adjacent surfaces

Hi Matt and Jessica. With the inner profile that you are struggling to sand. Try profiling a sanding block to the same angle as the inner crease with a plane. Ie 2x3 x6” long and glue your abrasive to it then you can run the block along the crease. Worth a try. Neil.

Thanks Neil. We tried that, but the compound curve and panel angle changes every few feet enough that it doesn't allow this without blending in each foot or so of sanding. After visiting the production boats, I see they have started radiusing this and blending it in instead of trying to define the line. Not only does that look better, but it's much easier to do.

That area you were working on would be a great area for some indirect light for lighting up the walkways. could then also act as a night light if they would be dimmable.

Look great as always! Along the lines of a piece of trim, what about putting a carbon fiber/aluminum rod/tube along the line that can be used as a hand hold and drying rack.

Maybe Im just lazy, or would prefer sailing to sanding…but does anyone else see easier solutions? Like mounting an L-shaped strip along this “line” on the wall and putting an LED light strip that can illuminate the upper wall & ceiling. Presto no irritating irregular line. And all these wall imperfections…wall art can cover most of it…or some fabric wall treatments…

Completely agree - a piece is some kind of contrasting trim will break up the expanse of white too.

Wow those imperfections are on another level. I'm a bit of a perfectionist myself, but the bits you marked with the sharpie pen go way beyond me. Also I have seen 'that crease line" being poured over on several videos now. On camera it looks fine - Better done than perfect. ..Better out sailing than perfect.. Oh wait, why not hide the 'bastard' with some exposed carbon fibre trim. make a feature of it and suddenly it is gone! Another idea is to make a shallow shadow line with your router and a template. But anyway it looks fine on camera, and I bet is it streets ahead of the ones produced in the Vietnamese factory. It looks terrific you have every right to look smug..

I can't see any of the "flaws" you are pointing out, Matt. Maybe it's different in real life, and maybe the camera exposure has trouble showing contours in the bright white paint, but damn it looks professional already. Going for gloss white is a worry giving your sharp eye. Maybe you want a surface that looks like it popped out of a mold, but I'm not sure what that will take. Amazing work and the scope of what you are doing is always so impressive.

Some of the flaws are very hard to see on camera, but they're noticeable enough to the eye that they just need a quick touchup with our fine filler before the next layer of primer goes on. We agree that a high gloss will show imperfections even more, which is why we'll only do that in the heads, and that's just to make it easier to clean. For the rest of the bulkheads and hull sides we'll be going with more of a stain finish.

Matt, wait for mast tensionning on water line... you have other thing to do than perfect shells angles...

That sharp edge your trying to get. Have you tried using a trowel at the correct angle and maybe run it along a guide that could double side taped to the hull?

Over my work career, I learned one thing - If it works, don’t fix it. Do you want to build a sail boat, or do you want to sail it? Perfectionism is a disease. Get this thing on the water.

Answer to your question, we want to build a sailboat. That's why we're taking the time to learn the skills ourselves instead of having the factory build our boat.

Use a router to make the line you want - then faire it to match - could make the line you want?

This finishing work is the most time consuming part. Once we're past it and onto the install of plumbing and electrical, things will move much more quickly. We're still looking at a launch date of 15 months from now.

I think we'll be lighter since we're paint vs gelcoat for the interior. It's amazing how much gelcoat weight adds up. But we also have less toys on our boat vs the production version

Microscopic inspections find microscopic flaws. Don't kill yourselves, guys.

You should take a look around any mass produced Fiberglass product,be it a boat, Car or what ever, they are never perfect or always the same and they are made by skilled people with years of experience, if you carry on being so fussy l will be dead by the time you finish it(l am 61) and would love to see you sailing her.I Spent over 30 years in the refinishing industry, sometimes you have to accept things are not always as you would like them to be.

Aluminum can be great, but after owning one for years we made the decision to go back to fiberglass. Tons of factors led to that decision, but knowing Delos, I'm sure it will be a better fit for them than it was for us.

Why don't you go ahead and finish it out. Take that beautiful lady of yours sailing. After a year or two of adventuring, if it still bothers you, then go back and have another go at it. Okay, that's my two cents. Whatever you do, we will enjoy watching the progress of the build.

It's extremely difficult to go back and correct the interior once we are living aboard. We learned that from our last build.

Leave the imperfections there. It'll give you something to do when you're out sailing and probably stop you looking for other imperfections that probably aren't there. Just my tuppence worth all the best

Because of the challenge of blending, going back to fix imperfections later basically means reworking the entire surface. Who knows, maybe in 5 years we'll move ourselves into an apartment for a few months while we go back and refinish the surfaces if necessary, but we'd like to sail off wit having done the best we're capable of.

Guys, work on your channel growth it helps with sanding.....................

Forgive me for saying this but I think you are "over egging the pudding"with the finish, get rid of the runs yes but as for the rest it looks good. One wonders just how good the complete factory boats compare to your exacting standards

It's NOT the wrong direction. It was clogged - our fault - and that was effecting the spray pattern. We had a pro painter come and look.

Nobody is going to see any of these small to medium imperfections including yourself , I bet you go on any semi custom boat and start examining the walls up close you will find imperfections .

We do notice imperfections on other boats, and with ours being brand new, we'll definitely notice specific things on ours as well. Especially an uneven line running all the way across the hull sides, lol. - Jessica

I bet that you are going to regret those Sharpie marks.

You might want to step back and re-examine your objectives: Do you want to address every single microscopic imperfection in out of the way places; or do you want to go sailing?

We've already been out on the water for 10 years. We love sailing, but it's not like we haven't had the experience of it. The rush for us to get out isn't as drastic as those who haven't had the chance to get out yet. This is not only a sailing boat for us, it's also our home. If we want to take a little extra time to get it up to standards that we're happy with, that's what we'll do. 😉 Jessica

The problems you're having is because you are Not Using the Spray gun Nozzle Correctly. It's almost Impossible to get the finish you want when the Spray "Fan" is 90 degrees Wrong going Left To Right and also when going Up And Down. Dear Matt, that is why the Nozzle turns at each direction change. I've be doing this as a Professional Painting Contractor for almost 50 years and it's painful to watch you struggle. If I Lived closer I'd come And help you finsh a room spraying it out and Staying and Teach you how to use this equipment Properly.. To paint Horizontal the Nozzle goes up and Down... To Paint up and Down the Nozzle points Horizontally .... Please Check out an HVLP Spray NOZZLE Instruction Video. You're wasting Time snd TONS of material having to sand off the Runs and then fill and re Fair the Valleys and Voids....Love you guys, but just Saying😏

The only one who notices the nit-picky shit on your boat is you. The important thing is, is your boat safe and reliable, the rest is just meaningless in the greater scheme of things.

We're not trying to impress anyone else just with the finish, it's what we want since we are the ones looking at it everyday.

Why on earth would you paint gelcoat? Painting is normally a last resort for worn out boats to make them look fresh. Paint is a huge problem ... once you paint you can't fill, you can't bond. Why ot just spray flowcoat on the internals? Painting the outer hulls would be a huge mistake ...

I don't think that hopping around the world for little or no reason is still a thing to do. Not for advertising Maxcruise boats nor for other reasons. Flying should be regulated internationally.

@@MJSailing I think it's not appropriate to fly half around the globe to see some boats just for fun and to advertise the brand. We all need to care about our influence on the environment and act accordingly. Building a boat from non recyclable composite materials is unluckily still state of art though aluminum is a good option. Not as competitive in terms of speed but still great. No kits for catamarans are on the market of course. So I think building the boat is ok but also influencers need to think about what to advertise, which company to partner with and to fly anywhere or not. Fotos or videos can be made and send to you if detail solutions are to be thought through.

@@andrebauer576 We all have an environmental footprint. We can (and should) all work to reduce our footprint. But when you start to tell other people how to live, the mission will fail. People are going to fly. We aren't going to stop flying because the world is a better place with airplanes than without. If reducing the impact of flying is your passion - hey, that's great... but your efforts may be more productive trying to support (in whatever manner you can) the development of planes that pollute less rather than telling people "don't do that thing you love." I used to think like you too. I've switched my thinking and now spend my time trying to clean up the electricity grid. I feel I am now making a difference in the world rather than judging others for their choices.

@@andrewm753 Partly true, telling other people how to live won't work. But making them think about how to will. Especially influencers have big impact and need to act accordingly. Not only about flying, also about sending their merch around the world with planes. Change on airplane technology will also happen most effective by passengers asking for more efficient planes or by less flights. It's just the way companies work, why change something if the clients don't ask for it. States can ask for more efficiency and slowly progress laws but bigger impact will be made by public or clients pressure. It's just the way rethinking things works, if the very first people were not protesting some 40 years ago, we wouldn't have any changes today. People need to hear different thoughts to change things.

I love this channel, but I can't watch as you fuss over the smallest of things. Good luck.

I was just wondering if you guys realize that you will never get that finished perfect not even the manufacturers that build these things get it to a perfect finish. There’s no such thing as a perfect finish.
