en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teenage_...
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, released as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Super Kame Ninja (ティーンエイジ・ミュータント・ニンジャ・タートルズ 〜スーパー亀忍者〜 Tīneiji Myūtanto Ninja Tātoruzu: Sūpā Kame Ninja?) in Japan and Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles in Europe, is a side-scrolling beat-'em-up released by Konami as a coin-operated video game in 1989. It is based on the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series which began airing in the winter of 1987. The original coin-operated game was distributed to the arcades in two variants: a standard 2-player version that allowed either player to choose their character and a deluxe 4-player version with each player controlling a different character. Home versions of the game were released for various platforms.
Konami followed the game up with a sequel, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time.
Gameplay:
The player chooses from one of the four Ninja Turtles: Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael. After Shredder kidnaps the Turtles' friend April O'Neil and their mentor Splinter, they must give chase, save their comrades, and defeat the evil Shredder. Up to four players (two in some versions) can take control of any of the Turtles. Donatello has slower attacks but a longer range, Michelangelo and Raphael have faster attacks but a shorter range, and Leonardo is a well-rounded Turtle with average range and speed.
The eight-way joystick controls the movements of the Turtle, the jump button makes them jump and the attack button makes them hit in front of them using their weapon. In addition to this, some combinations are possible. The Turtles can throw Foot soldiers overhead, and by pressing the jump and attack buttons, a special attack is performed. Raphael rolls along the ground and finishes with a kick, while the other Turtles do a sweeping jump attack with their weapons. Turtles can also spring off the wall in certain areas. Enemies can be defeated more quickly by slamming them into walls or solid objects. Many objects such as traffic cones, parking meters, fire hydrants and exploding oil drums can be hit or damaged with attacks in order to help defeat nearby enemies. In the attract mode, the game showed the first part of the cartoon opening, along with a portion of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theme song.
The majority of the enemies the Turtles must face are the Foot Soldiers. They wear a different colored uniform depending on what weapon they have. The purple-clad Foot Soldiers also have the ability to hold the Turtles from behind, draining their health and leaving them open to attack by the other Foot soldiers. The bosses in the game includes Bebop and Rocksteady (individually and together), Baxter Stockman, Granitor, General Traag, Krang, and Shredder himself.

The NES version of TMNT II rocked so hard that I remember being 6 or so and playing the heck out of it and getting pretty far but always dying somewhere in the late levels. Years later I picked up a cheap copy for $2 when I was 13 and finally beating it. The feeling I had was that of glory!

For some oddball reason, the 360 port cut out the scene where the turtles jump from the rooftop to April's apartment. It ends abruptly as Splinter says, "Hang on, April!" and cuts straight to the scene 1 screen. I will never ever figure out why they did that.

But oh man, hearing that music from the MS-DOS version brought back so many memories for me! I've actually gone through that entire game ( the MS-DOS port ) and the song plays THE ENTIRE TIME!! This vid really blew my mind. The TMNT arcade takes a unique place in my memories. As a kid, this (and the NES port) seemed forever out of my reach, so much so that whenever I caught a glimpse of it, I felt lucky to even look at the game demo and hear the jingle play whenever the turtle profiles came on (1:06) So finding out that this elusive (to me) game was ported amongst so many consoles in so many ways, from floppys to cassettes, each with varying results and weird limitations, is... well, like I said, mind blowing.

Plus, the gameplay was as fast and responsive as the arcade game, the soundtrack was amazing (and *better* than the arcade aside from the opening) and it featured extended stages in general, two extra stages and three new bosses.

...and the C-64 and DOS versions of the game clearly came from the same port since they have the same not-quite-the-turtles-theme. And as StRoRo pointed out, the ST and Amiga versions are clearly ports of each other down to the way Leonardo pauses at the beginning before they enter the building (unlike the arcade and NES where Mikey falls). Gotta say, I think the NES wins the best port award here, though it was far from perfect itself.

Objectively, some versions are really honest. the real problems came from bugs and lack of musics. For exemple, did you know that if you check the files of the AMIGA port with an Action Replay 2 cart, you will discover unfinished Jeroen Tel's musics that contained samples straight from the coin-op? AMSTRAD CPC version should be very nice too if there was less bugs and AY musics because 16 colour GFX and scrolling animation are very interesting regarding the limits of the hardware. But in 1991, Mirrorsoft was collapsing and they release this work in a hurry as developement was not really ended. But that's true too that arcade conversions on 8/16 bits computer was generally only made in for rentability and didn't made justice to powerful computers like the AMIGA. Ocean made some great coin-op conversions like Pang, Toki, Snow bros, NewZealand Story, Rainbow Islands and Liquid Kids. We can also talk about Rodland, Silkworm, Bubble Bobble... The talent, but especially the time given to developers by the publisher to develop a conversion often determined its quality...

Other than that I never hated this or any other game because of the hard difficulty. As an adult now, I can beat the game, no problem. Now Battle Toads and Castlvania, that a different story. :P

Atari ST, MS-Dos and Amiga Versions did nothing more than the expected for 16-bit machines; just acceptable!! @@MetalSonicodraco7342 I once heard a rumour that some developers were so worried about the fate of the home computer industry (at one point spectrum and C64 games were selling more than ST and Amiga games) that some developers were deliberately limiting those versions to encourage people to move to the 68000 machines. The other side of this was the developers couldn't afford to make games that exploited the more powerful hardware, thus a lot of ST and Amiga games were effectively conversions of Spectrum, C64 and Amstrad games instead of making bespoke, better games. There's an interview with the guy that did Ghostbusters 2 on the ST and Amiga who talks about this- he had some big ideas but was told the game needed to be the same on all 5 systems. The home computer industry did indeed die just a couple of years later and a lot of those developers had to move from the Amiga to the NES!

I played the arcade game before. I lost 2 quarters on that machine. 1: I wasted 25 cents on the 2up slot that didn't work. 2: I wasted the other 25 because I entered the coin NOT ON THE TITLE SCREEN.

I never understood why the software companies, for the most part, hired incompetent programmers to handle the home ports of arcade games. I mean, after you get past the early days of arcade games, most of the home ports sucked. Good ports were the exception rather than the rule. The Amiga could have had a great version of TMNT, but instead it looks like crap. Even the ST version looks better.

I'd guess it's coz the home computer market probably made up a tiny fraction of revenue for ppl like Konami as opposed to the console market......therefore they were disinclined to spend the required amount of money to get someone good on the job for relatively small returns. Remember, full price games for the home 8-bits could cost as little as £8-£11.....compared to $45-$60 a time for a NES cartridge..

I had no idea there was an ST version. I searched a lot back then but never found one. Pre Internet days and all. Graphics it looks good, very good, but the animation suffers as with all computer versions for some reason.

I grew up on NES version. Beat it hundreds of times. I did beat the actual arcade game at an arcade though. Still no port of it except for XBLA which I don't have. Best I have is the PS2 version of it and lack of music, voices and ability to choose who I want is bothersome.

They took out TMNT 1989 Classic Arcade from XBL? That sucks, but luckily I still have my copy. They did the same with UMK3(now they have a trilogy collection of MK with 1, 2, and UMK3).

Konami should have ported the game to the Sega Genesis with a proper 16-bit port. But my guess is Nintendo signed them to an exclusive deal and locked Sega out. Still it would have been the better system.
