en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dig_Dug
Dig Dug (????? Digu Dagu?) is an arcade game developed and published by Namco in Japan in 1982 for Namco Galaga hardware. It was later published outside of Japan by Atari. A popular game based on a simple concept, it was also released as a video game on many consoles.
Objective:
Objective
The objective of Dig Dug is to eliminate underground-dwelling monsters by inflating them until they pop, or by dropping rocks on them. There are two kinds of enemies in the game: Pookas, round red monsters (said to be modeled after tomatoes) who wear yellow goggles, and Fygars, green dragons who can breathe fire. The player's character is Dig Dug, dressed in white and blue, and able to dig tunnels through destructible environments. Dig Dug is killed if he is caught by either Pooka or Fygar, burned by a Fygar's fire, or crushed by a rock.
A partially inflated monster will gradually deflate and recover after a few seconds, during which time the player can pass safely through it. The monsters normally crawl through the tunnels in the dirt but can turn into ghostly eyes and travel slowly through the dirt. The last enemy on a level will try to escape off the top left of the screen.
More points are awarded for popping an enemy further down in the dirt (the levels are color-coded). In addition, Fygars are worth double points if exploded horizontally, since they can only breathe fire horizontally in the direction they are facing. Extra points are also awarded for dropping rocks on enemies in order to eliminate them rather than inflating them. If one enemy is killed by the rock, it is worth 1000 points. The next two add 1500 points each, and any after that add 2000. The act of digging is itself worth points, giving 10 points for each block dug, so some players do as much of it as possible in situations where the threat from the remaining monsters is minimal.
After the player drops two rocks, fruits and vegetables and other edible bonus items, such as Galaxian flagships appear in the center of the play field, and can be collected for points if the player is able to reach them before they disappear. These edible bonus items will appear even if the rocks fail to hit any enemies. In some versions of the game, the most points attainable from a single bonus fruit is 8,000 from the pineapple.
If the player drops a rock on a foe at the same time he pumps it to death, a glitch will occur whereupon all enemies will promptly disappear, but the game will not progress and the player will be free to dig through all dirt. Attaining the next level of play will then remain impossible, but the glitch can be resolved by forcing a rock to drop.
Level numbers are represented by flowers in the top right of the screen and each new level is noted at the beginning of each stage on the bottom right (as seen in this article's screenshot graphic). In successive levels more monsters appear on each screen and they move quicker. A level is completed successfully when the last monster is dispatched or succeeds in fleeing.
In the coin-operated version the game ends on round 256 (round 0), since this board is essentially an unplayable kill screen. At the start of the level a Pooka is placed directly on top of where the player starts, with no way to kill it.

@GUSTAVO666BR Error1010010101010 Same sound chip. It's named POKEY. The 7800 can also use the POKEY chip but it's not built into the machine. Instead, you can add it to the cartridge. That also answers the question if it's the same sound chip as the intellivision. POKEY is an exclusive Atari chip.

I really like the videos, but I think it would be very helpful if you included the years that these different version came out. Not everyone realizes that there are 10+ years between some of these versions. Also, and I know this might be a stretch, but including the cost of the hardware would be very interesting. Viewers could get a much better idea of how expensive those crappy home PCs where at that time. Pay 3 to 10 times more for a far worse gaming experience.

There are actually *two* versions for the Atari 800/XL/XE computers! Although at first glance only the original is shown here (at 13'46"), the second is in fact almost identical to the Atari 5200 port (at 15'11"). That's because the two formats are almost identical internally, and "porting" from one to the other at most required coding for different controllers and tweaking a few memory locations. They *could* simply have adapted the 800 version for the 5200, but I assume they realise it could have been done better and rewrote it... then backported that version to the 800.

If you ever decide to do another remake, I recommend adding the Apple II version as played on an Apple IIgs/emulator: running at native 2.8MHz (rather than the 8-bit II line's 1MHz) corrects the speed to almost match the arcade, and the audio chip handling the slightly sped-up music/effects improves it as well. I'm suggesting that in large part because it's how anyone that grew up with a IIgs would have played it, and the differences are greater than between many of the recent console ports. :)

In looking over the Atari 800/5200 versions - I would say they used a 4 color graphic mode for game play (the first line is a large character mode). So the black background would be one color, the multicolored dirt would be another color, the purple rocks and the purple part of the monsters were a third color and the green in the monsters would be a fourth color. I know, the dirt has 4 colors but when I say color I'm talking about the bit pattern used to put a dot on the screen using one color register. The Atari had the ability to change to value in the color register at different times while drawing the screen hence the four shades of brown. But they couldn't do that with the rocks without also messing up the monsters, hence they are purple. Digdug is white, so I'm assuming it's either on sprite or two sprites put together. When the monsters die, it looks like they used sprites for that animation also.

Not sure there would be much differences there since Mr Driller released around the time when home console and arcade games were about equal in terms of power, which meant most home conversions were just direct ports of the arcade game with maybe a few tweaks. At most the GB, Wonder Swan Color, and maybe mobile phone versions would be notably different but a majority of Mr Driller ports are roughly the same as the OG arcade version barring some little extras

Atari 2600 - Why? NES/Famicom - Perfected game! TI-99 - Looks pretty weird. Atari 7800 - An upgrade of the 2600 and 5200 versions. GBA - WTF! I still prefer Pac-Man Collection or Super Mario Advance! PS: I own a DS Lite. PS2/Gamecube/Xbox - Dig Dug was around for almost 20 years in the 6th generation. Mac/Xbox 360 - Already. This was the 7th generation of game consoles and they still won't stop producing versions of Dig Dug. Dreamcast: WHY WOULD YOU MAKE A VERSION OF DIG DUG IN THE 6TH GENERATION? Atari 5200 - Looks like something that Beavis and Butthead made. Arcade (The 2nd One) - WTF! 2010 WAS LONG AFTER DIG DUG'S RELEASE!

nospellsno10 the last one seemed to have some nice originality to it that almost every other version lacked, since they were at best ports of the arcade version. even with better hardware, they chose to keep the graphics like the original. The xbox 360 one however changed it up a bit, and i definitely gotta give props for being the only version except for arrangement that did so. i also like how it added some items as well. The windows version was also notable, since it had a very unique theme and cool original music. everything else however, was at best a port of the arcade version, or a downgrade from it. this kinda makes me wonder what it would be like to see an HD remastered version of dig-dug as well as some other arcade classics, like they did with Burger Time (except maybe not as terrible)
