A shocking experience 😂😂
I am 80 years young. I have a 4 month old flock of colored egg layers. I keep them because the keep me active. At age 75 I build my first build ever a nice hen house and run. At that time I had 5 egg layers. There only 2 of us here and I was able to keep family members in eggs. Since then I built three more coops and runs. Recently I enlarged the run on my main coop. Sharing my eggs is one way I can give back to friend and relatives. Am sure my hens are costing me much more then if I purchased my eggs, the joy I get from my mixed flock. My favorite is a white crested blue Polish. She has helped my tame the whole flock as she wants all my attention and the other one see how she reacts to me and now they want petting. Buy them to enrich the quality of life, and count the eggs as a bonus.

I have 10 hens and 3 ducks. I don't think the feed makes chicken keeping too expensive. The start up expense is what gets ya. We had to build a coop, duck house and a fence, etc. We live in town and it was important to us for things to look nice so...$$$ start up cost! It certainly could have been done much cheaper than we did it, But our chicken yard and coop is purdy and I love being a chicken mama. Nothing better than fresh eggs from my own girls. It will take YEARS to reoup our start up cost, but the joy they bring me is priceless.
You can always just use the whole rotational grazing job as your reason for keeping the old hens. Old hens can still work. 😁

I don't know about you Ms. Jessica but when I was younger and had chickens, if I got down real low to the ground and look at the chickens eye to eye, through the fence, I swear I was looking into the eyes of a living, breathing, miniature dinosaur, with feathers. All they need is some teeth and there you go, dinosaurs. My grandmother used to stew up the old hens who got stingy about giving up eggs. You had to cook em a long time but they sure made some delicious soup. God bless your family.
I saw how things were going last spring and ordered chicks. We built a hoop coop out of 2 cattle panels and a bottom frame made from 4 2x6's. We covered the front and back with hardware cloth and the curved sides with chicken wire. Then covered the chicken wire with a waterproof tarp. We did go back this winter and close off most of the back end, leaving enough open hardware cloth at the top for ventilation. The front was partially covered using some free corrugated plastic septic tank baffles from a lumber supply company. They are easily removable for spring and summer. I think we have about $200 in the whole thing. It is 8x8 and almost 6' tall inside. A roost across the back 8' span and poop board/litter tray underneath. Under that is room for 6 nest boxes. I have 10 hens and 1 rooster. I bought straight run and when the roos began to mature, I banded their legs and observed their behavior. I had 8 and only needed 1. I chose the one that exhibited the best protective behavior towards the hens. He is a terrific fellow and watches out for his 10 ladies. He loves to woo them and tid-bit for them. Occasionally he will do his dance and I catch it. Chickens are way better entertainment than anything on the tell-lie-vision.
We are considering getting chickens and live in an urban area where we can have only 6. I would love to see a video from chick preparing, setting up space, supplies, feeding. Everything for a newbie
I have 14 chickens. 2 people in the family. We get around 2800-3000 eggs per year. Around 8 per day. Very easy to care for. As long as they are protected, they can live a long time.
New chicken mom here, thanks for this video. It's still such a wonder to pick up a warm egg, And to listen to them clucking softly is such a sweet thing.
This year is the first year I have had to feed the wild turkeys because of the cold and the deep snow we have here in Central Washington State. I don't usually feed the wild life but I just couldn't stand watching them day after day huddled around my chicken coop hoping for some food. I just figured God sent them to me to feed so I did.
hey jess i live in denmark and pay more than a dollar per egg . so 5.00 for a dozen is fantastic. bless you

I buy my GENUINE free range eggs from a local non profit farm animal rescue/sanctuary. The group just (very apologetically) raised the price to $8 dozen. While it is steep, I understand that expenses everywhere have increased, including theirs. I wouldn’t pay that in a store, as I am skeptical about commercial “free range” and “organic” claims on those products. The companies play fast and loose with the qualifications.
I freeze dried my over abundance, this past year and have plenty to get me through.

Sweet Jess, You truly look like you're feeling so much better...I'm so very happy to see that😊
I have 15 now I had 34 but gave 19 to an elderly gentlemen who lost his whole flock. Anyway, I get about 2-4 eggs a day right now. Just 2 of us so that's plenty. I have a Rhode island red that's 9. 1/2 years old and she lays an egg occasionally. So she will just live out her life here, she still contributes so she stays.
We do have around 20 hens and 2 rosters and are chickens free range with our goats, pigs, goats and cows. We provide eggs for our whole family and our neighbors
I was just thinking about this the other day. I had chickens at our last house and everyone thought I was crazy because "eggs are so cheap!". I paid $7.49 for 18 eggs and thought, "who's crazy now?!" I wish I still had my lovely ladies, but when I'm able again I'm gonna have chickens again!
So grateful to still be getting home farm raised chicken eggs at our feed store for $3 a dozen here in Okanogan County, WA.... since I'm not raising chickens right now... We are Blessed..❤🐓🥚🍳🥓
As a first year chicken owner, I'm amazed at how many eggs I still get, in Ohio, during winter. 6 hens, 5 or 6 eggs per day. One broody hen that's currently raising a clutch of 6 chicks, so she doesn't count right now. (Plus four 4 month olds that aren't old enough to lay yet.... well, I did get one tiny egg a few days ago from one of them, but none since). However, I must say.....I converted a shed to a coop, thoroughly insulated, but ventilated, so they are plenty warm enough. And, they are very spoiled.... they get dried black soldier fly larvae, black oil sunflower and other seeds, various crushed nuts, frozen corn, fresh greens and kitchen scraps in addition to their layer feed. No supplemental lighting, but they do have an automatic door that lets them out as soon as the sun comes up. They're definitely spoiled.

@@shesatitagain234 thank you. Definitely "paying" over the average egg price for their eggs (in terms of feed), but they're my "pets". But when factoring in the benefits of eggs and compost, exercise and enjoyment... not to mention, I know WHAT'S in my eggs, it's actually priceless.
Thank you for sharing your smiles, thoughts, and ideas.
I turned my kids play house..we got second hand almost 15 years ago into our coop. I took found branches and made a perch and cracked 5 gallon buckets are my nesting boxes. It's safe and they started laying for Christmas.
Jess they are 8.00 and some 13.00 in Alaska. When I grew up. I am 70 now. We free ranged. Did not have to buy feed but they had plenty space to roam. Fed scrapes to pigs and chickens. I know it's different now and then we had chicken to eat and hog meat
During WWII, the Victory Garden recommendation for backyard chickens was to have two per each person in the family. I think it depends on how many eggs your family eats -- my daughter and I are eating carnivore now and for the foreseeable future, and we can eat a dozen eggs in a day just for the two of us. I'm increasing my flock this year -- we have about a dozen Buff Orpingtons and a handful of bantams; I'm adding another dozen Whiting True Blue's (I've had them before and they lay really well).
My Wife and I are in our mid and late 60's. We keep just six layers and that takes care of us, our Son's family and have our next door neighbor who buys 1 or 2 dozen eggs a week. So all works out just fine.
I have a large predator problem as well, I also have a few "freeloaders" Figure if they live long enough around here they deserve to "retire" here. Of course those aren't the ones that the coyotes like either. Going to enlarge my flocks this year to have eggs to sell at the farmers market. Glad to hear that about the netting I am looking at it for mine out in the field. God bless
One of my favorite facts about chickens is the predetermined # eggs they will lay. It’s amazing and really puts into perspective not wanting to rush the process/egg laying season because I am also a sucker and am very attached to my chickies.
@mimi27513

If only this same fact helped us all realize that our human eggs are also worth taking care of...way before those eggs become babies- the lack of transfer is real.
Growing up we had a speckled sussex named Matilda. She didn't lay much her last couple years, but she was our favorite hen so we didn't care(plus I think my parents didn't want to crush my heart haha). She had to have been over 10 years old. We got her and some others when they were around 3-5 years old, Matilda lived another 6.

My favorite black Cochin lived to be nearly 14. She was the best mama. I would watch to see when she went broody and go buy pullets/chicks to put under her. All it took was one day in a dog crate and she was THEIR mama, and don't even try to get near them.

Hi Jess So glad you are feeling better. Hubby and I have 2 hens. We had 4 but 2 died. Our 2 Buff Orpingtons just turned 1yo. We get 2 eggs 6 days a week. Although one hen quit laying for a few weeks due to the winter. But she laid today 😀 a birthday present for my husband. The initial start up costs to house chickens can be pricey but for me my girls are an absolute joy. They follow me around when I’m out in the garden, I’ll sit on my bench under the apple trees to take a break, the girls come and sit with me. So sweet.
I had a Turken from Murray McMurray in the 90's that laid everyday year round! And she was incredibly sweet. I'll be getting more of them soon.
Your video early last year about steps to help feed our families in rough times inspired me to order chickens. I love them! I don't really have them to make money. They give me joy and keep me moving. Since my chicken math was so off, it turned into a true miracle. I now am able to give half carton eggs to the local small food bank. There are 16-20 families that get excited each week when the eggs are picked up. Thank you for inspiring the miracle! Much love sweetie!
We have 8 chickens in our backyard. We love our girls. I talk to my chickens daily and hold each of them and tell them how pretty they are and will lay lots of eggs. We got 8 eggs today. Some days we have several that have laid multiple eggs a day and double yokes. We doubled our garden space last year. We are preparing for inflation impacts.
We got chickens last April and our girls have more than paid for themselves. We got 8 to start and plan to get another 8-10. My parents will be moving onto our land in the next few months so we’ll be needing eggs for 7. We adore them. The kiddos love taking care of them. Plus we LOVE playing with our girls. They’re amazing.
Chickens contribute more to your life than just eggs! Mental health & exercise, joy, the need to nurture and raise them. Watching them brings peace for many., they are playful & comical.
This was great info to to put out for aspiring and beginning chicken owners. You shared a lot of info that I wish I had know when I was first starting out. You are so right about chickens being a good starter animal. They're easy to care for and so darned entertaining. Plus... they make you breakfast!! You're so lucky that you're still getting eggs. I only have 3 hens at the moment because there's only two of us in the house and all three are currently freeloading. LOL. I'm getting hopeful though because one is starting to show signs that she's coming back into laying soon. Her comb is starting to redden up again and she's starting to squat when I go near her. Woo hoo!! I can't wait!
I currently have an Isa Brown hen living in the house. She was getting picked on and I didn't realize how bad until it was really bad. So she's staying in my "ICU" cage until she's doing well enough to be moved back out to a regular separation space I keep in the coop for a while (they get depressed they're completely isolated for too long). She's being such a sweet girl and really getting her strength back.😊

I've got an old girl that we did the same thing with! She survived a run in with a German Shepherd, our rooster busted her leg being aggressive and she lost a toe in one of the rare cold snaps that we had here in NC. She now runs around free range in the neighborhood (and they all love watching her shenanigans thankfully) and has a romance with my neighbors French Bulldog. If any hen has earned the right to be free it's her- and yet you regularly see my 3 and 5 year old walking around with her in their arms chatting away with her, and she's just listening like "Oh yes, tell me more Tiny Human!"
Aldi had eggs at $0.29 a dozen a few years ago and they were almost always less than a dollar. I buy mine at a local roadside farm store here in Irmo for between $4 and $5 a dozen. Hello from Georgia. Jess, I, too, have a love for chickens. I think they are worth watching while relaxing and I love to listen to them. They just make me smile. Take care.
It's ironic that I was looking through my Murray McMurray catalog when this video posted. The same catalog that has an article on The Carolina Homestead Exchange and many of your pictures!
Edible Acres KZread channel has a lot of videos of their chicken setup, which they feed mostly restaurant scraps in compost supplemented with sprouted/fermented grain. They do this in freezing upstate New York. I have 3 hens in a small suburban yard and they are wonderful! They get organic feed, which is expensive, but I still come out ahead, especially lately! Bonus is the pest control, and the fertilizer.

Small suburban flock here! We have 8 egg layers, rarely get more than 6 a day, and it's great - we eat 2 to 4 a day (two people) and it's enough for me to share with friends in summer. In winter, we averaged about 2 a day, which was still enough. They're super enjoyable, really entertaining. We feed bougie food (organic, no soy, no corn for the lay crumble) and give them scraps + let them free range 8 hours a day. I stagger my hatches and new birds so by fall/winter, I have at least two that are entering lay age so we get eggs through the dark months.
How I agree with you, Jess, about the sunshine. HOWEVER, this year in SW Arkansas, we are having temps in the 50s and 60s! As a former yankee, I DO NOT miss the snow. Thanks for the info about chickens molting. I haven't had them for very long - still learning.

Our chicken don't seem to lay as much in the really cold weather - I hadn't thought about the light being an issue, but that makes sense. I grow a crop called mangle root to supplement my feed for them, plus we feed our hens livers and meat scraps from butchering our cattle and scraps from any venison we're able to harvest during the year, in addition to feeding them layer pellets. There's lots of ways to supplement feed for your hens, you just have to be a little creative. Look to the old ways.......chickens really are easy keepers and so worth it!
$8 a dozen for Walmart brand eggs in my area, it's absolutely crazy.
Your smile and positivity light up my day! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and motivation!♡
I already know I will be a sucker too LOL I encourage it (if you can).... Let them live out there best life on that beautiful farm 🥰

1) Would love a tour of the chicken coop 2) What specifics do you feed your chickens? 3) Why Gallagher fencing over Premier1?
Your awesome 🥰😆Love when I can stop an hang with you .. I grew up with chickens love em 💚 thanks for being you !! God Bless you an your family 🥰💚🔥
We have always kept our hens for their whole lives. I know maybe some people think that's wimpie, but I just like to give them a good home for their whole lives.
I have a large area with my rabbits in it. I cover the outside with plastic in winter to block the weather, then summer take it down. I have wire enclosure. I just shortened the run, so I can use the materials to enclose next springs garden from them, and let them run. I have chickens, guineas and ducks. Letting them run really helps with the feed bill. I also feed them their egg shells back.
I’m 68 yrs of age. I start last yr in Feb 9. I have small hens Batman’s I love them so much. Now I’m up to 10 chickens. 9 hens 1 roo. I make a lot of food for them. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
We raise laying hens, though they really slow down here in Minnesota in the winter. We are getting new laying hens and meat birds this spring as our ladies are going on 6 years young. Murray McMurray has always had the highest quality chick's, grateful we can raise these on our farm❤️ In the spring and summer they get grass clippings to supplement their diet.
One of my goals for 2023 is to learn about chickens and decide if they are a good fit for me, and if yes, get a few! This video is perfect timing! I started a worm farm last year after you introduced Natalie to me, and now I feel addicted to “life.” I did in-ground worm beds to help regulate their temperature better with our hot summers. It’s so exciting to have little living creatures helping my garden!

Two of my hens used to come at a dead run when I appeared with my garden spade. As I turned soil in my garden beds, they plucked out grubs, but left my earthworms untouched. We made a hellava gardening team.

You will love having chickens. Start with a small flock and enjoy the learning process (it's easy) and the entertainment that they will provide you with. Not to mention the delicious eggs! Oh... and they're also great in the spring and fall when you want to clean up your garden beds. Just let them in there to do the work for you!

@@theresad6990 thank you for the encouragement!
I would love to only be paying $5 a dozen right now. Here in northern Ca I'm paying 8-10 a dozen
The only thing seperating me from having chickens is the fact that I live in an apartment. I am so blessed to have some small space for a garden, though, and I get so much joy from it.
It’s not just about the cost of food. It’s the best TV show ever!! Ha ha. Seriously though they clean up bugs and gardens so well!!! And you’re right …. It’s about blessing others in the abundance❤️
Chickens were my first love, too. I kept 5 lovely, lush ladies in my suburban back yard in NC for 6 years. I fenced off the patio and the yard had chain link fencing and deep shrubbery. The hens roamed free in the yard and we had a cute little coop. We called watching them “chicken tv” and found them so funny, relaxing, and beautiful! They all had distinct personalities and friendships. I was amazed at them!
Definitely love my girls!
Keeping chicken is like having an aquarium near my garden...I can just sit and watch them be and do and the stress and worries just melt away. I could watch my chickens interact for hours...such a balm for my soul.
Or, 2 eggs a YEAR, like my last barred rock from my original flock, Roxanna, who will be 8 years old in April! She gets to live out her retirement years here! She is the chicken you see in the "freeloader" memes!
Hey Jess. I’m a sucker too. I haven’t brought myself to cull any of my flock. Mine are starting to drop from old age. 😊 You don’t have to be ashamed. ❤️
Hey Hey! It's a good gardening day here in the Winter!! ❤️
Thank you for your info. I live in a hospital neighborhood and there is a “no livestock restriction “. I have always wanted to have a few hens to provide eggs for me. Now with the price of a dozen at $8.00 I am really hoping to get the law changed. I have had chickens before in another area and they are incredible. Thank you for your incredible knowledge to give me the incentive to go for it. I love all of your videos. Keep up the Great work!!!
Here in the PNW we have coyote, bobcats and cougars. The electric netting doesn’t work to keep large predators out. I watched a bobcat hop over the 4 foot fence like it was nothing. Another big predator took a full size Toulouse goose over the netting 🤷🏻♀️
Here on the West Coast we call them hen houses and the fenced yard is the coop...
Never thought about “HEN-opause” before!

We have a ten year old hen- she’s amazing. She’s mostly blind and has Arthritis but she free ranges and follows the other ladies about.
