Bold of Melon to wear that shirt. It’s clearly a diss to chance the rapper as he usually wears the number 3 but melon is wearing 4 which symbolizes that he is above chance and is a superior person.

I think Flea is held in an adequately high regard, he introduced slapping to the masses and fused Hardcore punk with jazz and funk to create a completely unique style of playing that is often imitated, but never replicated. He absolutely deserves to be in the top 10 for impact, influence and technical mastery, but maybe 2 is a stretch.

I always think it's stupid how people try to compare rock bassists like Flea to people like Jaco, whose job was to essentially solo and improvise. Flea is not only serving the song in RHCP, but often standing out and there's no doubting that he's very recognisable compared to most bassists.

I think Flea isn't appreciated so much for his standalone skills as for his chemistry with other members. He's kinda a model for what a bassist should be to an average band.
@meurer13daniel
4 жыл бұрын
And one of the reasons I like him so much is his presence. I know a bassist is incredibly important for a music even if you can't really "hear" him. But the problem is, in a lot of banda, the bass is not really present in the song. They kinda just blend in with the guitar and doesn't have a sound of their own. I love how Flea just take the spot, as a guitarrist would do in his place.
@FamousByFriday
4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. I think if the list were “Favorite Bassists” or “most popular” that rating would be completely accurate. And maybe the list is arranged by weighing different aspects and adding them all up. I agree, the perception is that bassists are lesser parts of the band, but it can add so much when it’s not just an after thought. In fact, with modern mix trends, it seems like bass is probably more important than guitar in pop music.
@soullessSiIence

People always confuse complexity and musicality. Pastorius can be a bass god but must of the time his lines are just technically fast or just difficult for the sake of it, while Flea is almost entirely lyrical in his playing. He's all about being musical, not technical. Many times he acts like a second guitarists, not like a mere bass like to support the drums. This what I don't like about normal people debating about music. You have to be a musician and have band playing experience to understand these things. I can't go to a medical forum and start giving my opinion on oncology, can I? Almost nobody understands this...
@Jaegurmangensun

Also its not even his main instrument, but still he invented his own sound funk/punk fusion bass is my favourite bass technique, its perfect in my eyes. He is a wizard on the trumpet or the "brass bitch" if one prefers. Within 3 year of first touching a bass he played for Fear! The dude's an artistic powerhouse. Acid for the Children has one of the most creative and unique writing styles I've read ever, it was so compelling that I read the full book in one sitting. His acting is awesome, the 'Low Down' is a beautiful film. I could write an essay on his artistic prowess and only scratch the surface. He is underrated as he doesn't play unnecessarily technically so as to make the perfectly blended RHCP songs have a feeling of instrumental unity that most bands hardly ever achieve to the same standard. He's also underappreciated by almost everyone as he doesn't show off his multiple talents, so people only know his slap bass sound. His trumpet rendition of Star Spangled Banner is the only version of that song that has made me cry, and I'm Scottish so have no emotional link to the song..

i got into dream theater like a year ago and went through their discography all the way up until 2003 Train of Thought album. Before that, their music was becoming a favorite of mine. it was tasteful, well thought out metal that was dynamic and they really knew how to write a great crescendo. once i listened to Train of Thought it was clear they were prioritizing musicianship over songwriting. but don't discredit the music they wrote pre 2003. it was very passionate and emotional stuff. songs like Scarred and Learning to Live got me through rough patches of my life, and the stuff from their debut album and Awake are some of the most unique sounding metal I have ever heard. The keyboard work on the first album is amazing with tracks like the Ones who Help to Set the sun.

5:23 I dont think its necesarily that Pitchforks standards for a 10/10 album have gone up buts its more so that the vast majority of the `10's they give are given long after those albums were released. So those are more so classic records. So I'd assume they give that score based on the quality and the influence those records would have on the genre its in moving forward. But when reviewing contemporary records, they can only go off the quality cause the long term impact it will have is almost impossible to know right then. But for old records, their influence is more or less established.

Strange enough, there was a thing I saw where Flea was playin some real serious Jazz lines and even some bass versions (transposed of course) of classical numbers. It gave me more respect for him than I already had (being a bass player myself).
Your bass is getting a lot better!! This is probably my favorite "opening bass" you've done so far
so dissapointed when i see people talking about the best bassist and not even a mention of Victor Wooten

I think Victor Wooten is a little bit overrated but so as many other good artists. But flea is not overrated, the only ones who gives him a 10000/10 aren't even fans of the chills the real fans just give him a 1000/10.

Flea's musicality is what makes him great in my mind. Even beyond his incredible technical prowess.
10:42 I'd love to enjoy In The Aeroplane Over The Sea but the mixing is making it a tedious chore. I know it's an old indie record and all, but the mix is overpowering/overshadowing the songs hiding the individual essence of the tracks. Unless there's some remastered version I'm not aware of.
I'm not usually a fan of reaction videos, but I find there are some great music reaction channels that are great and give a lot of insight into said song. My favorite right now is the charismatic voice. She is a vocal coach who loves to focus on what makes a singer unique and / or themselves. She's informative and just kind of a chill person.
I didn't know Brett Favre shaved his head and reviewed music. Truely a man of many talents.

Pitchfork retcons some albums to 10/10, or at least they have before in the case of Neutral Milk Hotel. They also want their 10 to be super prestigious, and I feel like they're purposely lowballing so that they can adjust scores later when an album is more of a consensus 10/10, TPAB being one of those albums.

It's super cheap, but I guess they can at least admit they made some bad reviews in the past by doing it... sort of. They're definitely gonna bump The Money Store and TPAB up to 10s at some point. They also have a tendency to use a remaster or special edition as an excuse to massively bump up a score. I think they gave Wilco's AM a really low score originally and ended up bumping it up to a 9.2 or something when they re-released it.
You should do a bass centered video where you show us your favorite licks, riffs and practice tips.
I really like how you put the question that's in the title always in first.
Honestly on the Tyler point, I get your point however i just like his voice at the natural pitch better in general.

“The bassist from King Crimson” Oh fuck, that’s like 7 dudes. Two dudes at the same time at one point. And at least 3 of them are in my top ten bassists.
1:47 Anthony's response here is the reason why I love Sigur Ros so much. It's the same concept, where the lyrics are used more as another texture and instrument rather than a medium for telling a story. The only difference is that with Sigur Ros, nobody knows what they're saying because they literally made up their own language. I know it's based heavily on Icelandic, but even then the translations are almost always off.
Being able to understand the lyrics doesn't make the singing not be an "instrument". The vocal melody, rythm and technique doesn't suddenly disappear If you understand the lyrics. It's about what you pay the most attention to, IF you can't pay attention to the entirety of the music.
me listening to cool beat with a foreign vocal sample: person who understands the language of the sample wondering why im dancing to somebody saying "fuck me in the" for two straight minutes
My music is mixed like shit. The new project of mine, Perennialist, has an over blown raw mix I wish I could fix
I used to feel that way until I saw them live, all the jamming in between songs and such were really loose for an arena show but he is really good at bass no doubt in my mind the stuff he does is far more than just locking in with rhythms

Dream theaters classic albums are amazing, fight me
talking about music in "foreign" languages I love the Filipino metal band Slapshock. absolutely love some of their Tagalog songs.. I like the sound of that language and the great melodies
On the whole reaction channels I personally get a kick out of seeing younger people, some unfamiliar with some genres getting exposed to new kinds of music. It’s like giving your friend a pair of headphones and saying “ayy check out this band” and they go “wow. I normally listen to rap but this metal song is really fucking dope. I see the similarities of blah blah blah” I don’t know that’s just me. Also vocal coaches reacting to a video and commenting and deconstructing a singers vocal ability and their techniques is kind of dope too.

Flea could have worked on just bssm and itd still be enough work from him to where I'd still say hes one of the most creative bassist ever. Underrated bass player tho: aaron "pnut" Willis.
His bass playing fits the music PERFECTLY, which is infinitely more important than anything else that a bass player can do
The Pitchfork question is interesting. It's been 9 years since the last perfect score and I think the more time that goes on the harder it is for individual reviewers at Pitchfork to give an album a 10. They'd kind of be making history.
On that reaction video part, the channel Lost in Vegas gave Gojira like an extra 50k monthly listeners I swear

I took mushrooms with my friends in the woods and my friend played RHCP for about two hours in a nearby tent and now I have a type of PTSD when I hear slap bass.
I was kind of hoping he would back the Flea point up by naming some other bassists but got nothing...
Re:French question. I think they were talking less about the melody and more about textures of words, probably. Kind of a Sigur Ros sort of deal, maybe. I think I'd agree that I really like the sounds that French makes, and I think they're probably just saying they may not be able to enjoy the sounds as just the sounds if they know what's being said?
Flea's work with the Mars Volta is amazing though.
I don't know I don't really like RHCP but I think Flea is super talented I'm conflicted... but... I honestly have to agree wholeheartedly. Also that French music take is completely idiotic.

There's a whole subset of recent french music for which that's true though. I think Anthony took in in reference to classics, idk what the original was about, but it holds up for a subset - aesthetic, dreamy, slow french pop. We have a ton of those and lyrics are often generic.

Yeah I agree wholeheartedly about the French take. If you like music without words, that's fine. You can listen to a capella and stuff. But just saying "french music is better because I don't know french and thus I have no idea what they're saying so I don't have to focus on lyrics" is pretty dumb. That's like saying all automatic cars are better because you don't know how to change the gears and thus changing gears is an irrelevant and inferior aspect of driving a car. The only difference in that analogy is that lyrics are fairly essential to music and manual transmission is not essential to cars.

@@HyenaFox Exactly!!! Melody and repetition is universal in MOST music. And to completely disregard lyrics because they aren't clear or you can't understand them makes it pretty clear where you stand with how you deconstruct a song.
