Let Me Pause Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree

Ойындар

A pause button doesn't HAVE to negatively effect the experience, by giving players easy access to menuing, or other features when not intended. It can be designed to be functional in solo play, while still providing the same experience. And Monster Hunter: Rise is going to show Elden Ring how it's done, for the sake of the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion DLC coming soon.

I feel like making pause a separate option from entering the menu, completely solves any issue people have with pausing 'ruining' the intended experience. It's not rocket science.

Steamdeck sleep mode is the pause button.

There is a way to true pause ER, though I don't remember the specific inputs you do. Polygon sez... "Start by opening the Main Menu with the Options (PS) or Menu (Xbox) button - the one that pulls up Inventory and Item Crafting - and choose one. Equipment is the default, so it’s the obvious choice. Hit the Help button - the touchpad on a PS controller or the View button on an Xbox. Pick the Menu Explanation option - the fastest way to do this is by hitting up on the D-pad - and select it with X/A. As long as the explanation tip box is open, the world of Elden Ring is paused - everything and everyone stops moving so you won’t get attacked. (There’s a similar Menu Explanation prompt in the map menu, but since you can’t open the map when an enemy is aware of you, it’s less useful.)" It works on PC too last I checked.

I'm curious if that actually works still, considering it's clearly a workaround that wasn't intended.

Just exit the game. It saves for you on exit in the exact location you exit at. The loading times re so fast its not even an issue.

You can do this in even the most dangerous situations and the enemy positions reset completely, so you could theoretically just take one enemy out at a time and exit to reset everyone if you wanted. Only exception is bosses but i feel like almost everyone will be trying to do them in 1 session and not pausing constantly. Combat access to menus is always restricted in jrpgs to some degree, Elden Ring is no different. You cant just quit out of combat at all in most jrpgs, elden ring you can quit out of anything you just have to start the boss again if you choose to do that.

Well firstly, loading times vary wildly depending on platform and hardware. SATA SSDs will likely load the game at least twice as slowly as PS5/SeriesXS, or a PC with an NVMe drive. And a standard HDD (which many still bulk store their games on, and are in the 8th gen consoles) are looking at 30 second+ load times. But also, some people won't want enemies reset. They won't want to have to start bosses over again. My friend recently went through Sekiro for the first time. He's played through every Souls game, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring. He's no stranger to this stuff. But he's also got a one year old kid now. The amount of times that game's pause came in handy, especially during bosses, which is obviously where he got stuck most often, wasn't insignificant. And yet being able to pause simply to stop the game from moving forward (not even to rummage through menus) didn't break the game. There are even a few games that allow you to pause multiplayer, if every person pauses at once. As I showed in this short, Monster Hunter: Rise shows exactly how it could be done. It's a few clicks away each time, so you can't use it for pause buffer tricks. It doesn't allow for menu navigation, so in a Souls game with the same system you wouldn't be able to use it for equipment swapping or anything. And it preserves the entire state of the game. More and more games are separating 'pause' from entering the menu, because they understand how menuing while the action is frozen can negatively impact the game. Because man... sometimes you just used a rare consumable you don't wanna waste, while fighting a hard boss, and suddenly your baby needs attention or something, you know?

Eh, monster hunter fights are longer. Elden Ring fights are fast. There's just no need.

As an adult who has run into emergency situations I have to take care of many times while playing these games single player, I disagree. It's just nonsense design, when you factor in things like using a really rare/finite consumable, and then running into a situation where you need to pause. Done the way Rise does it, it literally hurts nothing to add it in.

@@AJGsTV That's fair. But I still think a pause is warranted.
