just a couple 'fun' little facts: Jason is Bruce's first adopted son, Dick wasn't officially adopted until he was an adult . Jason was the golden child of the robins, Dick, Tim and Damien all came with challenges, had their own problems, but Jason was just happy to be there . Batman's biggest fear according to the Scarecrow Toxin was Jason's death, and even years after he came back, was still his biggest regret . Alfred once said that Jason's death hit Bruce worse than even his parents', because he had the power to stop it this time . in the comics, when Jason was revived, despite having no memories at all, he still called out for Bruce and last of all... Jason made Bruce laugh on the anniversary and in the location of his parents death when he tried to steal the wheels off the batmobile

Somewhat right but Jason was never adopted as a son rather as a ward like Dick, Tim would be the first to be adopted as a son and for a brief period was Tim Wayne and was the heir to the Wayne fortune much to Damien’s dismay. Jason was not considered the golden child of Robins that would go to either Dick or Tim, Dick for his optimism despite his origin and Tim for his cunning and detective skills. Jason was more the spoiled child, a reaction on Bruce’s behalf to the firing of Dick. It’s why Jason got away with murder while he was Robin despite Bruce knowing what happened. That is if post crisis continuity even counts these days.

This happens years after the original story but there was even more moments showcasing Bruce and Jason like father and son. One time for Bruce’s birthday he told bruce he would someday fix Bruce’s fathers watch which had a complicated mechanics to it. Fast forward to Red Hood after joining the Bat Family, Jason finally gifted Bruce the fixed watch from a distance. Another one is a flashback to Jason’s first patrol, and Alfred wanted a picture to commemorate it. Jason kept asking how to pose for the picture and Bruce kept saying “be serious” only for the picture to show them both smiling.

Then, you have the Red Hood and the outlaws comic book, just so much development than all the Bat Family. To be honest though, i felt like Jason personality is like the "literally me" because he is relatable to our life. Can I just say I love the parallel between Bruce and Jason with how they choose their alter egos. Bruce as a child was a afraid of bats, and there for chose to embrace he fear to use as a weapon against his enemies. Jason chose to take on a mantel that was once worn by the man who murdered him. Something that he fears, for as much as he hates the joker, the clown still haunts Jason's nightmares. Jason is also taking his fear and turning it into a weapon. The same logic as his old man.

The Joker is voiced by John DiMaggio (Bender, Jake the Dog, Marcus Fenix, etc.) in this film, and his performance is one my favorite animated Joker interpretations. I actually prefer him to Troy Baker's Joker, because instead of trying to impersonate Mark Hamill he does his own thing. I just think that when the OG voice actor you're trying to impersonate is already so perfect in their respective role, it is better to do your own thing than to try to perfectly fill their shoes. Whenever I hear Troy Baker's Joker, I can't help but think of him as the knockoff Mark Hamill Joker. That's not to say he doesn't do a good job, but I can *_always_* tell when it's him and not the "real deal", and then I just end up thinking to myself: how would Mark Hamill have handled that line differently? It's sort of uncanny to me. I don't have any complaints about Roger Craig Smith's Batman however, because to me, he doesn't sound anything like Kevin Conroy.

The reason Jason returned “damaged” is a couple of things. One, the longer someone is dead the less whole their mind will be when brought back. Two Ra’s can take it because he’s done it for 500 years, Jason was new so there were some unforeseen consequences. That combination of reasons made him mad. I know fans like to say that Bruce has a favorite and 90% of them say it’s either Tim, Damian or Dick. But honestly I think it’s Jason. You can even go back to old comics and Bruce is just so openly loving and fatherly towards Jason. Like there is a reason why Jason’s death shattered Bruce so much, why he was even willing to to kill Joker if Superman hadn’t stopped him and it’s cuz Bruce deeply loved Jason and I love that the interactive movie shows that side of Bruce

Urgh, Under the Red Hood! 😍 This one is where I set the bar for DC animated movies; the story, the voice acting, the animation, all so good!! Great pick to start off the new year! 💙 I remember reading a story a while ago; the late and great Kevin Conroy wanted to include Jason and the Death in the Family storyline for BTAS, but because Warner Bros had to/wanted to keep it kid friendly, they had to omit Jason entirely 😕Damn shame but at least we have the animated movies and games that give Jason his due.

The execs really wanted to keep the DCAU as kid friendly as possible. The writers basically had to trick them to kill off Dan Turpin in Superman. They promised the death would be reversed and never did it. It’d be pretty impossible to trick them into allowing a super famous comic book death that’s extremely brutal. Also Jason didn’t come back to life until 2005, near the tail end of JLU.

Batman also doesn't mainly kill his villains because they are usually people who are just sick, or wronged by the world they are in. He's trying to help them. A ton of his villains are usually mentioned to be able to turn out like him if only they weren't messed up. Dick also was his "perfect" successor, Like Bruce in every way but more caring. You are right about him not being able to take out the Joker, In a ton of stories he's the reason he keeps going and vise versa, In one of them when Batman stopped, Joker did too along with a ton of other villains, It just puts a ton into perspective.

Surprised to see you watch this one, but I’m glad you did, because this is easily one of the best Batman movies of all time. Jason Todd is the red-headed stepchild of the Bat family, never fully embraced by the fans who mercilessly chose to kill him off rather than see him don the red and green again. He is such a tragic character who is understandably pissed off at a world that doesn’t love him, but Batman never gave up on him. Their dynamic is one of the most heartbreaking in all of comics, and it’s great that there’s a movie that perfectly captures their unique relationship. I’m glad you enjoyed this one, Meg! 😊

As a huge DC Batman fan, I think you’re pretty spot on with Bruce’s savior complex, at least in this iteration, because of his success with Dick Grayson. Dick turned out well enough considering everything he went through, he’s the success story of Batman but Jason is the failure of Batman’s watch and care. Early on in the comics, there were no real distinctions between Jason and Dick from a character personality perspective, but now with his evolution into Red Hood that it turns it into a kind of meta narrative, the story within the story, being how in trying to make Jason into Dick, he failed him and through an indirect method caused Jason to become the Red Hood. I also wanna briefly mentioned how this story started this idea that Jason had a dark side to him in his days as robin when that originally wasn’t the case, it’s just a way to justify how Jason could’ve turned into this and although it’s a deviation the effort is appreciated in trying to make this story whole along with several other changes that genuinely make better sense than how it originally happened in the comics.

When Bruce said "tell me what happened to you", it was because he wasn't entirely sure if the Red Hood was Jason. Also in the comics, the only people who came to Jason's funeral was Bruce, Jim and Barbara Gordon, and the priest. Dick was in space at the time. Jason's body was also never replaced by Ra's. He came back to life on his own (as far as everyone in universe knows - Superboy Prime actually punched reality.) So a fifteen year old dug himself out of his grave. He *did* go into a Lazarus Pit, but it didn't revive him. All it did was reverse the catatonia he developed.

It's interesting for me to see how people react to these stories who didn't grow up with them. That's an experience I don't have, because by the time I was four, I was hooked. 30 years later, still hooked. Just a couple points that I think deserve consideration. "I didn't kill him, because it would be too easy." When Batman's code/ "one rule" of not killing comes up, it is framed as him not killing because murder is unethical. On it's own, that's a good reason not to murder people. That said, talking in terms of what is moral versus immoral is by its very nature a broad concept. To be more specific in reference to Batman, he doesn't kill because it's immoral, and because he knows himself, he knows that if he kills Joker, the killing won't stop there. If he can justify to himself killing the Joker, then what about Two-Face? Riddler? Where is the proverbial line in the sand? Only killing people who have killed other people? What about the dealers that sell drugs that people overdose on and die? Does the dealer deserve to die? What about the people that actually manufactured the drugs? If they hadn't made it, the person that overdosed wouldn't be dead, Batman wouldn't have killed the dealer, so really all those deaths are because of the people that made the drugs in the first place. So, if the line is now killing people for doing things that down the line will get people killed, what about pharmaceutical companies? What makes a bank robber that kills someone worse than a cop that kills someone? Does Batman kill the cop? Batman is filled with guilt and rage and is extremely intelligent. He knows if he can justify killing one person, he can justify killing hundreds, maybe thousands of people. He can't cross that line, because he knows he would lose himself in all the death that would come after it. Batman turning his back to Jason. That was a deliberate move to get Jason to shoot him. He wasn't turning his back on Jason because he really was ready to write him off and walk away, it was a ploy. That's why Joker has the line "you still figured out a way to win!"

"Fun" fact: the intro in a very brief adaptation of the "Death in the Family" story arc from the comics, back in the 80s. The second issue ended on an "Is he dead?" cliffhanger...and allowed the _audience_ to vote on which possible answer was true via a telephone poll! As you might have guessed, "Robin dies" won. Jason was quite hotly disliked at the time. And we know it wasn't a fake vote bc some unfinished art of the "Robin lives" version of the second-to-last issue did eventually make its way into the public. DC's vice president and executive editor Dick Giordano expected fans to let Jason live, while Batman group editor Dennis O'Nedl figured fans would vote to kill him off just to see if DC really had the stones to go through with it (though he voted "live" since he felt his job as editor would be made harder if Jason died). While there's no evidence that DC themselves had fixed the poll, rumors exist to this day that some of the voters cheated the system to vote multiple times - not helped by death's margin of victory being by only 74 votes. Still, what can we do now, besides appreciate the truly profound impact that the resulting moment had on the whole of the Batman mythos?

The situation with Tim Drake (3rd Robin, after Jason) was that he discovered Batman and Nightiwng's secret identities on his own and basically blackmailed Bruce into becoming Robin. Bruce was acting very violent and reckless as a result of Jason's death, and Tim, as Batman's admirer, knew that he needed a Robin by his side, not only to help him but also to prevent him from crossing the line. He told Brue that if he didn't train him and make him the new Robin he would do it alone anyway and possibly end up dead. And it worked. Bruce made him go through several rigorous tests to make himself ready and worthy of the mantle before going into the field. And Bruce's mood improved and he stopped being as impulsive as he was, precisely to better protect Robin. He got better for the child. Tim ended up helping him deal with his grief in a better way. Even the content of the stories became lighter for a while. That's why Robin is so important to Batman. That said, Jason has every right to be pissed and offended, even in the comics he tried to kill Tim with a sniper shot through the neck.

This is a very short version of it, but this is easily the best DC animated film. Jason goes on to be an anti-hero and then welcomed back into the bat-family eventually in the comics, but he’s not in anymore animated movies I think. The original comic where Jason dies is called “Death in the Family”. The movie is like an interactive DVD, and you can choose alternate paths to see alternate endings to this story, but they were all made for the movie. If you watch it, try to get it in disc to choose your path instead of watching it on streaming (I watched it on streaming, and you don’t get to see all the story paths)

This is one of the best Batman movies. Jason as Red Hood is a fan favorite in the fan base and I’ve seen people cosplay as him in conventions. I do recommend reading some of his solo comics one day. I love the cast. Jensen Ackles killed it as Jason knowing he would voiced Bruce in Long Halloween. Bruce Greenwood did a good job as Bruce. He sounded like Kevin Conroy yet he made it his own. John DiMaggio as Joker is in my top 3 voices of the character next to Troy Baker & Mark Hamill. Neil Patrick Harris as Nightwing was fitting because he voiced Spidey once and both are wise crackers. A good adaption of the Red Hood storyline. In the comics, Bruce & Jason did eventually made amends and Jason became a ally to the Bat Family & fall under the anti hero category because he still kills people depending if they deserve it. ^^ Now you’ve met three of the four main robins which leaves one more which I know you’ll meet one day. ☺️

The things I love about the DC animated movies is that they're stories with a lot emphasis on the theme of morality. When superhero comics were first created, obviously they were made for kids to show them these cool, morally strong, role models that went out, saved people and stopped criminals. Over the decades it's gotten more complex, how does one act when a villain crosses the line too many times? How does one act when a villain harms a loved one? I think these are some of the great questions explored in these movies that I don't see much elsewhere and I think it's something lacking in some of the live actions. I don't know if it's available on HBO max or if you've already seen it, but put on your list Superman vs the Elite. A great story from a writer who I think *gets* Superman. ps: Nice analysis at the end. You made a lot of good points and I liked how you noticed the differences between Jason and Dick. Jason was more of a troubled kid than Dick and his slip into villainy that much easier.

Regarding Batman A Death in the Family, if your going to do that one, it's honestly better to get the DVD. Jason's death in the comic A Death in the Family was the result of a fan vote (my understanding is the writer hated the idea of Robin and wanted to get rid of him to make Batman a solitary predator figure so he started writing Jason in a way he hoped would make readers turn on him and it worked). So the movie was made to honor that event, with various parts where you are given an option to change how the story goes. But the streaming version takes away the interactivity and leaves you with just 3 preset outcomes. I remember when I first learned they'd brought Jason back I was shocked. It had become a joke among comic fans that Jason's death was one of the few major comic book deaths that stuck, along with Bucky, Uncle Ben, etc. Then he's back. Couldn't get the trades fast enough.

This was the first animated DC movie I watched when I was a kid. I rewatched it when I got out of high school and my respect for the writers and voice actors went up. I loved the writers for making these superhuman people seem so real and the voice actors for being able to portray the emotions so well. Especially, the voice for adult Jason (Who by the way is Jensen Ackles).

Batman did legally adopt Jason. He also legally adopt Dick too. And he didn’t just throw money and training at them. He loves them as his boys. There’s a reason why they’re called the “Bat Family.”
