Let Me Call You Sweetheart - Valentine's Day Barbershop Quartet
Ойын-сауық
Say Happy Valentine's Day with a song... 1910 barbershop quartet style!
Let Me Call You Sweetheart is a popular song composed a century ago by Leo Friedman and Beth Slater Whitson, and it was a huge hit for the Peerless Quartet in 1911. The catchy melody suggests plenty of harmonizing opportunities that barberhop "woodshedders" (and Kibbers) love ; it's a near guarantee that every barbershop singer has sung the chorus to Let Me Call You Sweetheart at some point! it is often performed as a Singing Valentine by barbershop quartets.

--- LYRICS
I am dreaming Dear of you, day by day
Dreaming when the skies are blue, When they're gray
When the silv'ry moonlight gleams, Still I wander on in dreams
In a land of love, it seems, Just with you
Let me call you "Sweetheart," I'm in love with you
Let me hear you whisper that you love me too
Keep the love-light glowing in your eyes so true
Let me call you "Sweetheart," I'm in love with you

Oh wow. My great great grandma wrote this song. I can remember my grandfather talking about how he still got royalties for it until copyright lapsed. Thank you, Trudbol, this song means a lot to me and you performed it beautifully.

That’s so cool! I’ve always thought this song was so sweet, and have heard it many times. Just the other week, as a matter of fact, I was watching an old episode of The Waltons (The Shivaree? Episode) and they sang it on there. It was, hands down, one of the best moments in television history. Your great great grandma was super talented, and I’m so glad she chose to share her talent for the rest of us to hear! ❤️

That's so cool. It really is a beautiful song.
Love this version.
Warm and wonderful. . . snapped me back to the day that one of my favorite English prof colleagues received a lovely audible Valentine's Day gift: her husband, a music prof in the other end of our lengthy building, recruited a barbershop-type quartet of his male students to serenade her outside of her office, enlivening the day beautifully for all of us.
HEAVEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My Mother had Swiss Thorens music box that I now have. It plays three melodies: I Love You Truly. Let Me Call You Sweetheart, and Brahms Lullaby. My oldest memories are listening to this in a rocking chair held by my Mother. Thank you.
OH MY GOD THIS SONG I used to hear it every year on Valentine's,, ahh thank you for covering this 💞

Julian, I'm two years' late but definitely not two dollars short on this blog. I've been following you for about a decade or so now, and am always impressed with your choices of tunes, arrangements, and of course your impeccable singing--it's always a joy. You saved my bacon tonight as I'm a local piano player (and sometime singer) who does a regular gig at a local old folks' home here in Alabama, USA. The crowd loves to sing this one as a singalong, and I've been through several good recordings by different BSQs and well-known American pop singers and not a single one of them sang the verse. Thanks for posting this for that part--it'll be a great help to do this anytime for the folks at the home (and especially on Valentine's Day) with me using the verse as a surprise intro. Merci beaucoup, mon ami, pour toutes les chansons que vous chantez, et j'espere a vous ecouter dans le futur pour beaucoup ans! Respectfully, PMH
Wonderful ❤❤❤🥺🥂

I remember this from our old Edison phonograph. The old wind-up type with those thick records. The recording I was listening to (back in the 1960s) was probably from sometime in the 1920s.
Yay! You made the full version!
Tangentially: This shares at least a progression with _I'll be Home for Christmas_, (Which, of course, came later.) There is a reference to "Love Light" in both songs in the same verse. They can be sung together or in a mash-up.
that was awesome

Whenever I watch your videos I try to figure out which version of you it is singing the various parts. Here's my guess: Stage right is Bass, second from stage right is the lead--I'm pretty sure of that one., third is Tenor, and fourth is Baritone. How far off am I? And is that always the order you line up in your videos, or do you shuffle it around?
@JulienNeel
2 жыл бұрын
Close. :) The layout in barbershop is generally the same: the main parts Lead and Bass in the center, with Tenor & Bari on the sides, Tenor next to Lead and Bari next to Bass. So that yields two solutions: - Tenor / Lead / Bass / Bari - or Bari / Bass / Lead / Tenor. In the above video, I went with the first solution. You can spot it more easily when you listen to the video with stereo headphones.
@TheRealDrJoey
2 жыл бұрын
@@JulienNeel Thanks. Don't have headphones I'm afraid. Usually I pick out the bass when there are contrapuntal parts, and I've tried guessing by watching your technique, but you look the same singing each part! I would have thought you'd have to put your chin down to your chest to get those real low notes--that was the technique my Dad used when I was little, and he would sing "Many Brave Hearts Are Asleep In the Deep" into my belly:-)

Quadruplets?
Fabulous sound but no attention was paid to personality. I see zero expression on all the faces of the singer. What a shame as if presentation doesn’t mean anything! It does it is judged it is worth points. Somethings no amount of training can benefit certain people people if you don’t get it…
