Now that the polar vortex has passed, we can turn the water back on .. it was a little inconvenient having to heat water on the stove for bathing and washing, but all together good practice for a day when that will be the norm - if that is what is in the cards for us. Jason walks around and takes stock of the plants that were able to survive the cold, and what lessons we can learn from them.

It’s far better to humble yourself than to be humiliated. People speak of the strength of the oaks, but the kelps endure the pounding of the ocean surf and lose only a few shreds from the tips of their fronds to what would uproot and smash the trees.

@2:22 the realization of why I keep mispronouncing some Latin nouns dawns on me.. being a complete nerd, I thought it was funny. I'm not a looney, just weird

I grew up in Minnesota, at one time I had a t shirt that showed a loon (Minnesota state bird) and a tick with the caption of A loon/ a tick/ from Minnesota. Until I wore it to shreds, it was my favorite t shirt.

Those radish tops looked some strange garden star fish. I love Peppermint by itself, but more for my headaches and muscle aches. I also like to huff it and rub the oils made from it on my neck. Oh, Yarrow.. hmm I think that was one I wanted to look up. It is kinda hard to kill blackberries and I am also kinda glad they don’t do well here. Going back to Peppermint and mints they are not invasive like up North but I wish they were more than an annual but so far my experiments have either shriveled in our awful heat, or been uprooted by M. I do wish we had dandelions though, as a useful “weed”. Nice video, liked it Jason. Enjoyed the chat today too, thanks for dropping in my live :)

Diakons are winter compost for us in zone 6. However i just found at that they are not friendly plants for developing mycorrhizae.

Once the clay has been mostly converted, I suspect we will need fewer and fewer daikons .. eventually, I'll just keep enough going for seed and the occasional meal. They are good for quick infusion of organic matter down towards the substrate, and in areas that will be maintained as grasslands, may not be a bad choice for a regular cover crop - keeping the biome more bacterial than fungal. In fungal dominated areas, I like what Gary did www.youtube.com/@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy/videos Oh gosh, its been a year or so back, so its hard to find the exact video .. but He used an iron bar to drive a hole down into his bed, so that the wood chips (aged, not fresh!) could infiltrate deep into the soil. Pockets of those make a home for fungi, worms, and make good soil over time. Its a bit more work, but I imagine one could do it on the 1/4 acre scale. Generally, I think the wood chip filled trench/walkways are going to get the job done here.

@@Green.Country.Agroforestry thanks for that. The midland garden space is about half fill clay over gravel with a small layer of compost over it. Prepping raspberry beds now. I believe most of what i am planting prefers the fungal soil. The diakon and their ilk will most likely get a separate area. I am a bad creator . No videos in a year. Lol.

Wild geranium, that vining plant, maybe with a short of it I'll finally debut here on KZread with it! 😂As for another weed, yellow centers are the flower (no petals) and when they die back, they turn into little harpoon-like black seeds, that so easily nab on to your clothing, there's a video here listing that as a good weed, have yet to check that video out. And cool seeing your blackberry hanging on, because its close to the ground? In neighboring Jalisco State (west of here, with Pacific Ocean coastline) the traditional Agave growers are turning to berry production: blackberries, raspberries, strawberries and blueberries, as these berries have become so popular here, its way more profitable to produce berries than the agaves from which we get the syrup and which gets distilled into tequila.🫐🍓

The blackberry really surprised me, since it is one that has been bred to be thornless .. not necessarily bred for hardiness. Being prostrate seemed to be the key factor for most things.
