Lessons from Long Haul Lyme & Long Haul COVID | Johns Hopkins Rheumatology

Ғылым және технология

May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month. Educate yourself about Lyme disease and tick-borne disease and how to keep your family safe.
Many of the persistent symptoms in Lyme disease are remarkably similar to those of COVID long haulers. Long haul COVID should heed lessons from long haul Lyme disease. Research in both may provide new insights into long haul disease mechanisms.
We are hopeful that the tremendous resources for long haul COVID research could help accelerate Lyme disease knowledge and treatments as well. Learn more at the Johns Hopkins Lyme Disease Research Center website - www.hopkinslyme.org

So can we Lyme long haulers get some attention please. Many doctors turn us away and often humiliate us. No insurance covers us . I was never treated with enough antibiotic. I know I have living infection inside me and I am fighting it alone and for years. I want help. It is not all in my head. I am a former microbiologist. I expected better.

I think a lot of it has to do with how hard it is to get a positive Lyme test. When people still have a small amount of the infection in their body how are we supposed to measure it when the existing test is so bad when it’s a full blown case.

I've suffered with symptoms for at least 30 years and had been given every (wrong) test and diagnosis under the sun. Just last summer I was diagnosed with Lyme after I heard about it on a podcast, did my own research, and sought out a doctor who was willing to do proper testing. If patients and their doctors had been believed and listened to rather than mocked (and had licenses suspended) for decades, we'd probably have answer to long covid already.

I had the same symptoms from black mold exposure. My immune system went nuts trying to neutralize all of the very potent mycotoxins and inflamed my skin, nervous system, and muscles in an attempt to flush those toxins. And that doesn't include the direct toxigenic effects on my health from mold exudates. This mold exposure lead to chronic innate immune system activation (CIRS) and I bear the scars to this day, despite recovering. They initially thought I had chronic lyme, and many of these long covid symptoms also sound close to home to me even though I've never gotten covid. These long-term inflammatory responses to harmful substance traces and pathogen residues in the body, as occurs in long covid, chronic lyme, and other endogenous toxin exposures, are likely autoimmune diseases and should be treated and addressed as autoimmune diseases are in medicine.

Hired a good Lyme coach and after years of heavy metal detoxing/Rifing/Ozone treatments/Meyer's cocktail IVs/gluten-free/etc...I was totally well in Nov. 2019. Then we managed to get C19 in June of 2020...and have been suffering from Long Haulers ever since. I knew it felt like my Lyme was reactivated...I wonder if those who do get Long Covid are actually us Lymies and the current bioweapon was the icing on the cake...so to speak. That’s very interesting to read. I was diagnosed with Lyme in Germany 2019, but as well way to late so it was chronic already. Was than treated and felt better the last year… had COVID three weeks ago and already gone Lyme symptoms came back (vertigo, severe fatigue days in a row, ear pain, feeling sick, brain fog). Do you have an idea where to turn to (now living in the UK) or what to do?

Parasite cleanses are a must...if you have a pulse...you have parasites. The brain fog is from being overly toxic...once we started with the CEs about 7 years ago...the fog lifted..along with a lot of the pain we were experiencing (Hubby had Lyme light from me...and now has Long Covid with headaches/vertigo...and of course, we both have fatigue that is getting better because we use natural remedies to heal...and stay as far from pharmakeia as possible). If you can get God's healing oil (cannabis)...or any form...go for it...does wonders with so many issues and may keep the proteins from folding and causing things like ALS/MS/Parkinson's/Alzheimers/etc. which is basically long term Lyme that has not properly been cared for.

Many, if not most autoimmune diseases, cause all the symptoms the doctor mentioned. Not only Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, Lyme and C19, but Erythromelalgia (EM), Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR), Celiac(CD), and arthritis, and bone necrosis, to name a few, all cause exhaustion, foggy thinking, and pain.

I took my 36 year-old son to the hospital a few days ago with all these symptoms, and his doctor said his symptoms are from anxiety and sent him home! However, he has mold toxicity, Bartonella and Babesia, and got Covid in January. He’s taking antibiotics and ivermectin prescribed by an MD, who is also a specialist in stealth infections. He’s had an excruciating headache since then. He cries because he hurts all over and is now delusional and paranoid, etc. He has all these symptoms, both neurological and psychological, has been in psychosis, is chronically fatigued and the list goes on… He’s been living here for 19 months because he got the mold toxicity from his dad’s house. However, when he came home from the hospital, 2 days ago, he suddenly doesn’t believe that he has a brain infection and has been yelling at me and calling me names all day! My dog is scared to death! Within 3 days, he’s lost his mind! I’ve spent the last 19 months taking care of him every single day, and all of a sudden he says he’s always hated me. BTW, His dad is living here too because he never got his house remediated, and I’ve let him. Stupid me! I’m crying, because have NO idea what happened!

Oh honey! I'm so sorry for you. What a mess! I can say but one thing: fight for your son! The way he speaks now is clearly illness-induced. I know his words must hurt you on a very deep level, and even I hurt with you from afar. But this is not him talking. This is disease in advanced stages talking. Find a Lyme literate medical doctor. Persevere and fight, this will get better. The doctor that sent him home is a total loser and part of the problem. Alas, nothing new here, happens to so many of us. You know he's wrong, you just know it. Don't listen to such abusers in white coats! Find better ones, though they are hard to find. May God Himself give you and your family ways out of this and guide you onto the path of healing. Don't sit back but push forward. You cannot guide a train, that stands still. Sending you love and prayers from across the pond in Europe.

Two weeks later, my body tanked! I truly thought it was Lyme disease. However, I experienced bouts of tachycardia, severe muscle fatigue, loss of breath when doing tasks and am now experiencing great joint pain and muscle fatigue. What do we do when we have long Covid with a squeeze of Lyme? I work with an amazing functional medicine practitioner and will continue to do so but am concerned about my future. Please can I absolutely implore you to remove the music throughout what I believe is going to be a very interesting video? I have Fibromyalgia and have also just been diagnosed with Lyme. I've watched 5 mins of your video and cannot continue because the music is utterly killing my ability to concentrate on your words. I can only concentrate on one or the other but not both together and I'm sorry, no disrespect to you sir but the music is awful anyway. I cannot understand the need to play tinkling background music which is also too loud over a very interesting and informative talk as if it embellishes it any any way. It really doesn't and your words are much more interesting to listen to. You mention in the first 5 mins a list of symptoms of people suffering with these conditions, in the list are cognitive and ability to concentrate. So why create loud background music that would surely affect that very symptom? I may be in the minority here, although I'm thinking perhaps I'm not. But I hope you can take on board my suggestion. Thank you.
